Their logo says it all. Severe drought and heat have played havoc in the otherwise beautiful gardens. These will hopefully improve as will the level of water in the river. given better rainfall. Accommodation varies from basic to semi luxurious with some indoor and outdoor spa baths. The caravan and camping park which is situated right next to the river is lovely although I don't envy mothers with small children. A number of swimming pools are available in different areas and lots of entertainment for children.

Stayed in Moonstone River front cabana. the view was VERY nice, the room was spacious and it had a Jacuzzi which was perfect and we had a lovely huge deck overlooking the river. The swimming pool were nice and clean, all facilities were clean. However the bar/restaurant had the MINIMUM and the staff was rude and did not even try to accommodate us. this took away the nice weekend. So disappointing.

Stayed in Apies Doring Lodge. It is in serious need of maintenance. It was a boys (bachelors) weekend with some fishing thrown in. Bunch of guys are generally easy but would not take my wife to stay there. Don't think I would go back.

I called Ruby River for a booking based on a colleague's recommendation. I told the receptionist that we have a 2 year old and a 4 year old and that we are looking for a quiet room with the least amount of noise as we value a decent night's rest.
As we entered the Diamond room it immediately dawned on me that this room had not been refurbished for at least 20 years. But the most startling discovery was that we were situated right adjacent to the Pub/restaurant, with music blaring already in the early afternoon. Other shortcomings of the room were broken blinds unable to open, leaving the room dark, a big flight of stairs COMPLETELY unsuitable for a 2 year old, as a fall down the stairs was a high possibility. The balcony outside had a cigarette burn a hole right through the floor. Braai facility was completely inadequate and dirty, with about 15 cigarette butts in the braai. We immediately vacated the room and returned to reception where we requested an alternate room, only to be told that it was booked out. It was a particularly nasty encounter, as the staff were uncompromising and unsympathetic. We immediately drove back to Johannesburg. I cannot say anything good about our horrible experience with Ruby river and its staff. They completely ignored my request and therefore I feel very strongly that I am entitled to a 100% refund.

We decided to take a day’s leave from our busy schedules on Friday 9 December and head to Ruby River Resort until Sunday the 11th.

Having driven 300km to get to Ruby River Resort, we were surprised to see the poor state of the unit we’re going to be spending the next 2 nights in. I have never stayed in such a filthy and poorly maintained el-grotto in my entire life.

The bedsheet have not even been replaced since the previous guests left. Mouse droppings in the kitchen cupboards, spider webs throughout, and the stuffy smell was enough to make anyone sick. Not even to mention the Cockroaches which are everywhere.

The only night we spent there, we put plastic down on the bed, which I had in my car from visits to the nursery. The following morning we packed our stuff and went to reception to check-out. We explained our dissatisfaction and requested to be refunded for the second night. The duty manager appeared to be understanding and promised to refund us for the second night’s stay. Sadly this was all just empty promises.

To all prospective visitors, put your money to much better us by going somewhere else. This establishment, management and owners need to get their act together and understand what the hospitality industry is really about.

It’s a disgrace to think someone could charge money for anyone else to stay there, and expect them to return in future.

A genuine one stop shop with various self catering accommodation options with awesome river views. The units are clean and comfortable and equipped with almost everything you would need.Try the Bike and Barrel restaurant. Friendly service and lots to do in the area. Would go back there in a heartbeat. Neat camping area as well but we didn't make use of that.

We booked a 2 night stay at Ruby River Resort and paid R1450 per night. An additional R500 was charged as a breakage deposit. We really excepted a lot better for the price we've paid. What a disappointment! It's nothing like the photos on the website! The only positive aspects were the friendly receptionist and a very clean unit. There was no shower curtain, a TV without reception, inadequate aircon, no towels were provided, no braai grid, complicated window coverings etc. The patio had a braai area, which was also the only place with a river view. It was so small, that all four of us couldn't sit there at the same time. There are very steep stairs from the patio to the swimmingpool, with no rails or even a gate to keep little ones away from the water. The "front door" resembles a garden gate and can only be locked with an actual lock. We couldn't spend another night, and left on Saturday afternoon. We requested that a portion of the second night be refunded. Despite our valid reasons, it was declined. We only received the R500 breakage deposit back. Their logo says "What a place!" I can't agree more.

I don't recommend anything about this resort and here is a few reasons why... Actually a lot more to mention but here goes

All chalets that where booked for the wedding will most likely give the same feedback...
Dirty
Unsafe... Falling apart
Overpriced for what you get
Revulting dirty showers and baths
Upstairs room in Sapphire chalet dirty, bathroom falling apart, bath with jets... Disaster , cobwebs, dead spiders, dust.
Disgusting linen in sapphire, we had to sleep on towels because it felt unhygienic to sleep on the linen...

The best part was that the day after check in a housekeeping team was sent to clean the chalets... Why.... Nothing was done before our arrival so why go through the trouble to come and clean it after we already stayed for an evening... The kitchen was gross... Dirt against the wall... No plug in the basin, no dishwashing liquid... Maybe a visit from the health inspector is necessary and also a safety officer to check on structures...

We had to wash the floors with dettol before our children could walk on the floor because of the dirt... Shocking!!!!!

We asked for a bedside lamp in one of the rooms and got laughed at, no bins in the bathrooms or rooms. AND only one plug for the fan... What do we use to charge phones with etc.

PLEASE DONT USE THE EXCUSE THAT YOU ARE RENOVATING, FAMILY STAYED WITH YOU A YEAR AGO AND WHERE TOLD YOU ARE BUSY RENOVATING, NOTHING HAS HAPPENED SINCE THEN.

I will not suggest staying here EVER, it does NOT look anything like the photos on the website.... False advertising...

There is a lot of potential at the resort but currently you are charging the prices but definitely not delivering the standards... Absolutely shocking!!!

The room was clean, but that is where it ended!!! Some of the curtains are in terrible condition. Most of the curtains don't fit. The shower curtain doesn't fit. The cutlery and crockery don't match. The rest of the resort is most certainly in need of TLC. The only area that appeared to be not to bad is the bar area. This place can be so much more!

We booked at Ruby River Resort to attend a wedding at a venue close by. We had to book for 2 nights even though we only wanted to stay one night. Extra money spent! The rooms are very basic but fairly clean. When we came back from the wedding reception that night, the gates were locked. They gave us a number to call before we left but there was no answer. Cellphone reception is about non existent in the resort and we couldn't contact anyone already inside to get someone to open the gates. We had to battle for 1 hour before we were able to get in. It was very frustrating. They should have a guard at the gate at all times to let people in. I will never stay there again.
