Mercury Holidays, two weeks end of Feb 2020 - £1150 each paid for two weeks All Inclusive and a private transfer.
A hotel run by (mostly) extremely happy and hardworking staff. Brilliant service for two weeks from maids to managers. 10/10.
Our rooms was a little dated but kept spotlessly clean, a decent size with a big double bed. A large balcony overlooking the beach (room 630).
Food was pretty good on the whole with lots of variety and traditional Sri Lankan cuisine. The food could have been hotter sometimes, but that's a normal problem with all inclusive.
Plenty of sunbeds, smallish pool but there are beautiful beaches right on the doorstep. Sea is swimmable with caution and there is a lifeguard.
This hotel is very quiet with some small wildlife and birds to see, no loud music, queues, boozy guests or crowded bars - perfect for us.
It is located a mile or so from bars and restaurants, however a short Tuk Tuk ride is very cheap (agree price before you go). They wait outside the hotel. There is also a bus or train close by.
All in all a thoroughly relaxing couple of weeks (with a few trips), recommended for those that like a quiet, reasonably priced hotel with beach access/walks.

We stayed at the Koggala Beach hotel for 2 weeks whilst taking in the local area. The hotel facilities are ok with rooms being clean and comfortable. Location is amazing directly on the beach however trips are lengthy due to location. Having stayed in many 3* hotels this was ok for the price paid. Biggest let down has to be the food. Don’t get me wrong, we didn’t come here expecting English food. Breakfast is ok however lunch and dinner have the same food served every day, which over 2 weeks becomes tiresome. This hotel has a long way to go on the food front. Ample space around the resort, plenty of sun beds etc. Beach sellers pushing trips, taxi rides and carved goods become tiresome after a few days. Often they are aggressive and rude if you don’t buy. Tuk tuk’s available directly outside the gate. These guys will hound you and it becomes a chore. These guys also become aggressive if you don’t take a ride. Hotel should monitor the tuk tuk and beach sellers to improve guest experience.

This was our 2nd visit to this hotel, after 27 years (1992)

Our family/extended family members spent 2 nights at this hotel in January 2020. The booking was done over the phone and the reservation staff was very prompt and kind and provided all necessary information.

We were also given the exact rooms we requested due to our personal issue. you could view the amazing oceanic view from the room itself was and it was fantastic.

All the staff starting from the reception/room services/restaurant/garden/security/pool was very kind and and we had an amazing spa treatment as well from the spa situated at the Long Beach Hotel.

Although we booked the Koggala Beach Hotel, we were allowed to use all the outdoor pools at the Long Beach Hotel too. the staff there too were very friendly and helpful.

Food at the restaurant was good. But it would have been nicer if we were provided with more sea food varieties as we were near the sea.

There are places to visit near by like the famous Mr. Martin Wickremesinghe museum, the island Madol Duwa, cinnamon cottage industry etc..

All the necessary amenities were available in the rooms. Some of those need upgrading / replacing and I have forwarded my suggestions to the hotel management already.

The oceanic view was amazing and we noticed that all the foreign travelers were taking the maximum advantage of their tour.

I hope that the hotel would improve some of the aspects I have mentioned to them.

I say that people should visit this amazing beach location and wish them all the best for 2020 and further.

Koggala Beach Hotel & Beach Cabana Hotel
We were at Koggala Beach Hotel for 2 Days 9th January to 11th January 2020.
Spent 2 days at this resort which is only about 15 km from the historic city of Galle. The hotel has about 20 rooms and they are in good condition. The hotel is a solid looking building and it seems to be well maintained.
Our room in particular was clean and The bathroom was spacious and clean.

The resident manager was very helpful and considerate. Mr Dilu Amarakoon as the RM was on hand to help without queries.
The best part was the fantastically Cabana beach with clear white sands shimmering in the noon day sun. There was no litter, or plastic bottles or broken glass on the beach. It was spotlessly maintained. Watching the waves come in was a truly wonderful experience as the waves came in a majestic and awe inspiring manner before crashing out in a thunderous roar. This was nature and beauty to marvel at.

This is a lovely relaxing place to be on the whole. Sometimes there are groups on a tour who go and come back but there are also couples.
The food is natural and healthy. I didn't see one burger and chips. The dining room could do with a few plants and the lighting is a bit austere. A bit more mood lighting would be good.it would also be nice to eat lunch outside but that would need a separate lunch time serving area I expect.
The rooms are basic but clean and the beds are comfortable.
Thd people who work here really lovely too. Hey couldn't be more helpful.
Sunbeds are set on the extensive lawn
area with plenty of shade provided by palm trees and there is access to the beach and Indian Ocean.
Its 3 star but good value for money.
The only gripe is that they could do with more beach towels but that's probably because some people tend to use two on their sun beds.

We spent 3 weeks at this basic, good value hotel. The room was spacious and the sea view from the balcony was wonderful. The food was mainly Sri Lankan dishes, we especially liked the vegetable curries. We liked that we could get to Marissa and Unamatuna by tuk tuk or bus from outside the hotel. The beach is beautiful but the strong waves made swimming difficult at times. During the last week of our stay the country was put in lockdown because of Covid 19. The hotel managed the situation well and we felt safe. Mercury Holidays our travel company kept us updated and the airport transfer during curfew happened without a hitch. We definitely did not feel abandoned, but were grateful to get home.

We stayed for 3 weeks in February 2020 and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
The room S604 was part of the ground floor rooms with direct access to patio/lawn & sunbeds. It also had a great sea view.
Room was totally adequate for the holiday.
Food was completely acceptable , although in some cases a little cold. Drinks (we were all-inclusive) were fine, with a reasonable selection.
Downside was location ( a long way from Country attactions) and entertainment, or lack of it.
Overall a great value holiday and would have no hestation in staying another 3 weeks.
Well done Koggla Beach.

A hotel of 3 distinct parts which appears to have taken over other sites due to vast differences in size and quality.
Best area is the main building which has large, modern and spacious rooms and bathrooms with balconies which have ocean views.
Lovely quality bed linen, comfortable beds and large modern bathrooms.
Could use more plug sockets in larger rooms and would expect hairdryers and in room safe.
Rooms are immaculate, huge praise to the housekeeping team who work so hard to keep the sand away.
WiFi wasn't working on upper floor so management provided a router in the room.
Communal areas are well maintained and nice pool and sun loungers .
Food was good though menu could be increased as if staying more than a few days you'd get bored and there's not a lot near by.
Fair prices on food and drink.
Breakfast was poor. Lack of fresh ingredients such as fruit and pasties which were limited. Fruit juice tasted like it was a concentrate. Breads and pastries were limited and toaster needs replacing (and staff must not handle the bread that guests have put on without gloves or tongs).
Egg station staff need more training as fried eggs and omelette were either burnt or raw.
Bar area needs better lighting as not the best for ambience.
Staff are lovely and everyone tries to make it a good stay. With a few tweaks this could be excellent and the different units blended together

This is our 2nd visit to this lovely hotel. All rooms have sea view. We had a room on 1st floor then changed to a terrace room for a change. The terrace room was really nice as there are sunbeds outside your door.
Food was good especially the soup and Dall. If there any requests Chef gladly accommodated.
Staff - absolutely wonderful. Always happy, polite and helpful. When my husband was attacked by sandflies staff brought in Aloe Vera from their home and the lifeguard applied Citron oil.
Transport. The hotel is ideally placed for travelling on South Coast. We visited Mirrisa, Unawanatuna, Hikkaduwa, Gall by bus no 350 and 2. (100 rupees) Stop located outside hotel. Hikkaduwa and Galle can be visited by train. Timetable easily accessible on phone. Koggala Station turn right out if hotel. Approx 1/2 mile. Best by taking tuc tuc approx 300 rupees. At time of writing 400 rupees to British pound.
Hotel situated on beautiful beach but high waves unsuitable for swimming, best beaches for swimming, Unawanatuna by bus approx 10 minutes. Snorkeling Hikkaduwa approx 45 minutes by bus or train. Exchange. Banks need your passport. Turn right, Approx 200 yards from hotel. We found best rates in Galle in Fort area. 15 mins by by bus or train.
No bars or restaurants in immediate area. Best in Unawatuna and lovely beach bars.

We stayed here for 8 nights. Total 10 persons, family and friends. The New year party was fantastic, good music and excellent food. However the beach was the best. You can walk or run along the beach several kilometres almost alone. No sunbeds are placed at the beach. At the hotel there are enough sunbeds for everyone. The Wifi is not the best but it works sufficient in the lobby. Next time I come to Sri Lanka I will stay here again.

Are there enough sunbeds
Answer from LakesRes
Peterborough, United Kingdom64 contributions51 helpful votes
When we were there, there weren't any but I can only speak for the private cabins fronting the beach - apparently they had experienced issues with these being stolen - but from our point of view it made for a very difficult beach experience. Two sunbeds were produced when we complained. I don't think there were any around the pool in our part of the hotel either. There are no facilities on the beach to allow you to hire any - it's not commercialised in any way. Despite the beauty couldn't recommend if you want a luxury beach experience - although it may have changed since Feb - sorry.

Is there English books I can borrow during my stay at the hotel? Thank you
Answer from Kay
2 contributions3 helpful votes
There are a couple of shops at the hotel near reception and one of them has a lending library where guests can borrow books for a very small fee ( pennies per day). The proceeds go to a local kids charity and all the books have been left by guests so I usually bring a few with me and donate them after I've read them.

Is there anywhere apart from airport I can exchange currency? Thank you
Answer from Kay

The hotel will change money for you at a good rate for a small fee but we normally use a cash point a few minutes' walk from the hotel which charges about 200 rupees (less than £1) per transaction. If you travel around you may find others which don't charge but these are few and far between.....look for the long queues of people outside!
