Detailed Reviews
We had a brilliant stay here! The location is one in a million! In a time, when nothing is like it normally is, we think that the hotel has found excellent solutions, resulting in us feeling really safe. Last time we were here, they had a buffet for dinner, now we were served a 3-course dinner where one could choose between fish and meat for the main course. If you think that they had over 200 guests to serve, the quality was very impressive. Smiling staff all the way. We chose to spend most of the time at the hotel, our kids played tennis and squash and we all had a great time in their beautiful wellness area. We had booked a fjord view room and appreciated that the hotel had its own style – a mixture of history and elegance. Our stay here was the highlight of our tour – highly recommended!

Room and bathroom was very clean, bed was comfortable and we paid for the Sunday dinner buffet, which was a good buffet and value for money, with a lot of options and the dessert table had so many tasty desserts to chose from. The Monday breakfast buffet was good and varied. The hotel has nice social areas to sit and enjoy the outdoor view or stay inside. The swimming area was very clean, with serval swimming areas/pools something that we appreciate a lot and used it a couple of hours. A nice grown ups swimming area with access to a sauna looking the fjord. The location of the hotel is top, there lies the beauty of this property. There is also a little beach that gives you access to the fjord, my two family members dared to swim in the fjord, I just enjoy their enthusiasm for bathing in cold water.
Interaction with the staff was minimum, the young receptionist was kind and knowledgeable, and we had a fantastic waiter from Ukraine. Check -out was easy. The hotel has a lot parking places, good WIFI and we enjoyed our stay.

Well what can I say but Spectacular!
We arrived at the hotel with a tiny hiccup with our room booking but it was resolved in minutes. Upgraded to none other than the Queen's suite we were blown away with the customer service and help by Dante, our new best friend!
Unbelievable customer service by all the staff, this hotel has it all. So many places for you to sit and read whilst looking out on the Fjord or you can look around at all the displays, play pool, and at night go to the very cool bar. It really did blow us away.
The pool was heated inside, the pool outside looked onto the Fjord or the mountains, every view as spectacular as the last.
Spoiled for choice, there are walks from the hotel for the explorers. The walk to Nosi was hard going but we were not let down by the views.
We had breakfast and dinner and all I can say is we didn't want to leave. The catering staff were fantastic, the food exquisite. So many different things to choose, again we were spoiled for choice.
All in all, this is one of the best places we've stayed. All the staff, from the cleaners to the Managers at reception should feel very proud of the service they are providing. We will definitely be back!

I’m going to start by saying, I have been here multiple times over multiple years. Every year it’s getting exponentially worse. It is purely coasting on historic reputation and location.
For each time, the food is getting marginally worse. It puts the art of cooking to shame. As a luxurious hotel it’s an utter failure. If you do the mistake of ordering a room towards the “apple orchard” prepare to get dissatisfied. There is no such thing, all you get is a view of the narrow road outside.
The only redeeming factor is the pool area, which does not way up for the low standard. The bar is laughable. There is nothing to do in the evening, there are 2 ping pong tables and 1 pool table. Spread over hundred guests.
Avoid this place at all costs, it’s a tourist trap to the max. I would go as far as to call it a scam. I have been staying here for free multiple times and still feel cheated.
The owners should feel ashamed of what they have done do this historic place.
I will never be returning, I would not even do it if they were paying.

Some good points.
The location is excellent, beautiful fjord views (if you get a fjord view room - but beware not all the fjord view rooms will have good views because of the tower in the middle front of the building.)
The room was fine if a bit dull, roomyenough and the bed was very good. Clean. Not sure though that I appreciated all the printed warnings in what purports to be a high class hotel that drinking your own alcohol is illegal and that it will be confiscated and not given back.
Plenty of comfy places to sit round the hotel and outside, and a roomy bar. Did not use pool so cannot comment on that.
But the bad points.
The food was so poor it trumps everything else, especially considering its price. The dinner was like cheap bus tour catering when the kitchen staff went home early before service and left it all congealing and cooling. Everything seems to be geared to cheapness and ease of preparation.
There was one choice for starter, always cold and to give an example, one night was gazpacho and the next night was tomato and mozzarella with what looked like the previous night's gazpacho interleaved. There were 2 choices for main but very little veg and everything was utterly bland and tasteless. Two nights (in a 3 night stay) there was almost no veg, another it was the beetroot from the jar on the breakfast table. I had the halibut one night, it was dry and overcooked and came with 3 little potato balls. One night both the starter and the main were with horseradish, a bit of a problem if like many people that is a strong flavour you don't like, but not to worry because in neither dish could the person who had it taste any horseradish. Pasta with seafruits was spghetti with the breakfast salmon topped with a few mussels.
There was one choice of dessert, always seemd to be a cream with a little fruit in it, or as an extra option, always strawberries and cream (same strawberries appeared at breakfast too).
service was fast, that's good or bad depending on what you want.
Breakfast was ok, not great but not really bad. Nowhere to make toast though, there was only one machine which was never switched on, when asked they seemed concerned about crowds building up round the toaster.
had a picnic lunch and surprisingly it was pretty good, ham, cheese and salad all with nice bread, but expensive.
Reception and other staff were very variable, some were efficient, friendly and knowledgeable, some weren't any of those things.
In general the hotel has great potential with the right management, or at least the right catering, but considering the price they charge vis a vis the awful food it only gets 2 stars.

Hi JDC, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review and rating, we really appreciate it. We're very happy to hear you found our location to be excellent, that you enjoyed the views and that you found our many comfy seating areas pleasant. We do understand that the note regarding consuming alcohol purchased outside the premises might come off as quite strict, however due to the alcohol service laws, we have to ensure this is adhered to, as we risk loosing our license to serve otherwise. As for your feedback on the meals served, we're sorry to hear that we didn't meet your expectations. We try, be it breakfast, lunch, packed lunch or dinner, to provide a great experience for all our guests, but sometimes different tastes and expectations makes this difficult. We're saddened to see you make assumptions on how we operate based on the food served. We do not re-serve any food from breakfast for dinner (or lunch!), nor does any of the kitchen staff pre-cook anything only to go home. We cook and serve the dinner fresh every day, from scratch. I will share your feedback with the rest of the team. Have a great summer!

Room ok, no air condition, sleep with balcony door open.
Food:
Dinner had no taste, cold mushroom for starters, Luke warm lamb for dinner and cold tasteless caramel pudding for desert. a terrible waste of fantastic ingredients. The best part was the water, cider and wine.
Breakfast, nothing special, cold scrambled eggs, asked for hard cooked eggs, got them soft cooked.
Overpriced, a frozen pizza taste's more.
Pool area the only reason for 2 stars.

Beautiful and unique property in a serene postcard like setting. Old world European charm which may not be for some based on comments in previous reviews regarding bathroom details, thermostat controls, etc. The room was very warm and we were informed they had not yet switched to the warm weather system so we turned off the heated bathroom floor and kept the balcony door open all night.
This is a resort so be prepared for a higher than normal activity level, more noise, lots of kids, etc. We checked in at 8pm after a long drive and were looking for a lite meal. There were no options in the area so our only choice was the expensive buffet. There were many items to choose from, but we only had a small portion. It would be nice if they considered offering a few select alacarte menu items so everyone is not forced to purchase a full buffet.
Breakfast was the average hotel offering. One suggestion is they continue stocking coffee and other items until the end of breakfast hours. Towards the end of breakfast service, all the coffee pots, cream, etc were empty.

Dear valued guest! Thank you very much for staying with us at Hotel Ullensvang and thank you for giving us such contructive feedback, we really apreciate that. I am so glad to hear you enjoyed our wonderful setting by the fjord. We also love it here! From the 15th of May the hotel also offers lighter meals in addition to the service in the main dining room. We open up our barbeque station in the garden and there we will offer salads, seafood and traditional barbeque temptations. If the weather does not allow us to be open outdoor, we move this inside to our Fjord Bar. I hope you enjoyed your stay in the Hardanger region and you are very much welcome to visit us again. Warm regards,

The location is absolutely amazing, and the hotels outside areas are really beautiful! With swimmingpool inside and outside with breathtaking views.
Good food and wonderful breakfast.
I had mistakenly booked online for two adults and two kids, but I travelled alone with the kids. Upon check out I pointed this out to staff in the reception but a grumpy lady in her forties with dark short hair showed no understanding and refused to give me any discount on the suiteseeing as we were 3 not 4. The suite was spacious but in summertime you nedd to have all the windows open and there is no aircondition and its facing the noisy main road, so a seaview room is a must.

The hotel sits at the fjord edge so has perfect views. The rooms are clean and the food at the hotel is very good with great service.
The hotel has a heated pool both inside and out and there are several other activities available at the hotel but a lot of people use it as a base to go hiking. There are several walks available around the hotel and a fjord cruise can be joined within 5 mins walk.

There is a lot to like about this hotel but I think we were unlucky in that there was a large rowdy wedding on which exposed a lot of the faults with the hotel. We arrived mid afternoon and the car park was absolutely full, there is not enough parking parking for a hotel of this size and not enough signage to tell you of options. We ended up wedged in a tiny space in the underground car park. As I predicted at the time we ended up totally boxed in due to awful parking by other guests and took forever to get out. As we were parked on the lower level we e entered the hotel on that level, and this is the most unwelcoming entrance ever, and again poor signage. Our room had a Mountain View, fair enough I hadn’t paid for the better view so no complaints there. However, there is absolutely no sound proofing so lorries, motorbikes and the sound of rowdy guests actually sat on the roof swearing and listening to music meant the room was inhabitable in the day. To be fair it was quieter after midnight. I understand that no hotel can know what kind of guests they will have but the staff did very little to prevent the behaviour of some from disrupting the enjoyment of others. The large wedding group blocked doors, played music on their phones, swore and left glasses everywhere, which were rarely collected. They also smoked inside which I didn’t think was allowed but staff turned a blind eye. Just arrived Hikers randomly walked through the spa facility in their dusty boots leaving muddy trails by the pool. Perhaps more signage is needed but it also underlines the point that the hotel is trying to appeal to everyone and doesn’t have the staff or a plan to be able to manage such conflicts. I do have to say that when a drunk kicked off in the evening buffet the waiter calmed the situation well but that meant all the attention went on him (his plate was carried back, he was offered coffee and constantly checked on) given that staff were also moving people who had complained about sitting near the large group due to noise (they were yelling to each other from one side of the room to another so understand why) it meant that we got no attention whatsoever, we couldn’t even order a glass of wine to take away the stress of having to sit near someone who was drunkenly volatile. I think he should have been asked to leave rather than appeased. Overall what should have been a lovely three night break at the end of our 2 weeks in Norway was stressful. The hotel is in a lovely setting, has some great facilities and mostly really nice staff but is let down by 1) needing an upgrade in the rooms (double glazing and guest comfort should be more important than a new reception desk) 2) appalling parking 3) poor signage 4) not really having an identity and seemingly being unable to manage the needs of different types of guest. Some hotels do this really well and can deliver a fantastic wedding, deal with coach parties and independent outdoorsy travellers. I suggest the management learn from them quickly as it would appear there is no real management plan in place.

You are welcome to drop us an e-mail on ullensvang@hotel-ullensvang.no as well for more information as I was unfortunately not able to include the website link in my answer.
Welcome!
Sorry- I don't know the answer as we booked a walking package with a few hotels at the same time including dinner, pack lunch and breakfast
Greetings to you from Hotel Ullensvang!
Lilian was giving you some great advice already. During the summer months, there is also a bus/boat connection, making it very easy to reach our hotel from Bergen. I am not allowed to post a website link here - but if you google Hardangerfjord in a Nutshell, you will find a very useful site. Please do not hesitate to send us an e-mail anytime - ullensvang@hotel-ullensvang.no and we will glady assist you with any details you might need!
