Macgregor is a unique place to visit. And this establishment (with its Lady Jane Grey restaurant) is without doubt the best place to stay when you do. Macgregor itself is a village of extraordinary variety: art (real art) and crafts, pubs, cafes and bistros as well as the Temenos retreat centre with its beautiful meditation-garden, theatre/cinema and library. The Lodge, perched on a hill outside the village, is unique. The whole place – the reception hall, restaurant and bar-lounge, conference centre and chapel for weddings, as well as the guest-rooms and cottages, are built of local stone with wooden beams and thatch. The place is surrounded by a sea of fynbos (indigenous Cape flora) and an enormous view of rolling hills and misty mountains. You could be in Scotland - except for the wonderful Karoo weather. The guest-rooms are spacious and gracious, with heaters as well as open fires for winter. And the restaurant, run by a dedicated culinary couple, is stunning. Unusual but delicious (and inexpensive) local wines complete a culinary treat. Even breakfast, served on the terrace overlooking a glowing garden, is special, every item perfectly prepared and presented. The Lodge can sleep eighteen and the restaurant can seat eighty.

I loved the view and the staff. I can’t wait to return. We have already booked our next trip. Matt and Colin were brilliant hosts and they deserve medals for staying awake with us so long and entertaining us. Thank you both for a brilliant weekend

For anyone who has travelled a bit in Asia and Europe to well deserved Very Good hotels I would not compare this to that on a global scale. But without out question the Lords Lodge is a Very Good bySouth African standards. As a 4 star hotel it offers very authentic and rustic accommodation.

It's breathtaking surroundings would impress any hardened traveler, and the food was above average.
The cottages are well stocked and well kept, although please be aware that you need to state the room needs making up or the cleaning staff will do the basic cleaning.

Would I recommend visiting, yes.
Would we return, certainly.
When, as winter lovers we would love to return when the winter has really kicked in.

I am not sure about summer, but I would not rate the pool area and facilities if you are looking to lounge by the pool for the holiday.

I feel I very much that I want to give the establishment a just review, and on that note I feel it was a memorable visit.
Thank you

Watch out:

If you are vegetarian
If you want to chill by the pool
If you are sensitive about your car and dust, the lodge is situated on a dirt road outside of McGregor.

We had a great winter weekend break-away at Lord's Lodge and the warm hospitality of Colin and Matt was very welcoming. The service staff went out of their way to ensure our stay was comfortable - special thanks to Latifa and Marelize! The view from our room (and the Lodge) was lovely, the room was cozy and bed very comfortable and warm. The Scottish themes everywhere were special. We had dinner and breakfast at the Lodge both days - excellent, but very generous portions. Overall a geat special-occasion destination, we will be back!

I was expecting great things of this place when I booked on line......it did not disappoint!
The location is awesome, surrounded by mountains and beautiful countryside wherever you look.
We had one of the cottages for 5 nights and thoroughly enjoyed it. Dinner and breakfast excellent as was the service from Merrlise and Latifa. Thank you ladies for looking after us so well.

Our recent 2 night stay was an absolute joy - and a certain highlight of our trip back to South Africa.

Perched on a hill between McGregor and Robertson, this stone boutique hotel oozes charm and great hospitality. Small - perhaps only 4 bedrooms and 4 cottages - you will feel as if you have been transported to the Scottish Highlands. Our bedroom was large and tastefully furnished. It was super-comfy and offered luxury linen, satellite television, a fireplace, mini-bar fridge, robes, slippers and enough blankets to ward off any chill. The large bathroom was equally as delightful - and offered a charming claw-foot bath.

Both breakfasts and dinners were a delight. It was a nice departure from the usual "buffet breakfast" to order our preferred breakfast choice. The dinner menu came with some good options. A small drawback was the long wait for our dinner but the cherry on the top was our "personalized" dinner we received on our second evening.

As a way of suggestion we thought the upstairs dining area could have been converted effortlessly into a lounge area for guests (which was lacking) and the outdoors seating area would benefit by being enclosed with some quality sheers, which would still offer the great views, but in total comfort, climate-wise.

The Lord's Lodge will make you feel special but you will never feel "over" serviced. Highest accolades to the two front-of-house staff!! This establishment comes highly commended!

My wife and I stayed here on 9 April 2016 for one night. We arrived and were greeted by an extremely friendly and warm receptionist who showed us to our room. The room (we stayed in "Gordon"), like the rest of the lodge, was beautiful - rough stone walls, wooden floors, a fire-place, chandelier and an extremely comfortable bed really gave a lot of character. The en-suite bathroom had a claw-foot bath-tub (which was a bit narrow for our liking), but no shower. The minibar was well-stocked, but no price-list was made available.

There is a beautiful chapel up the hill that we explored, a pool and a bar. The whole place really is beautiful. Supper in the restaurant was delicious - my wife had a biltong salad to start with, and I had a carpaccio. For main course, my wife had a green peppercorn steak done to perfection, and I had a delicious piece of salmon. The salmon was meant to come with a shrimp risotto, but unfortunately only had one shrimp in it though.

A slight issue we had was with the TV. We did not get all channels, and the technician who was called in could not remedy this. It would have been nice to have received an apology for this from management. There also seems to be no WiFi access.

All in all though, this place is lovely and we will most certainly be back!

What a beautiful and special experience it was to be welcomed by Colin and Matt, their attention to detail is outstanding. Our cottage was immaculate and the dinner was gourmet level. We really felt so welcome, and were treated like family. We had such amazing times at their unique bar, surrounded by the stunning scenery. Thank you Colin and Matt for making the last leg of our road trip unforgettable. We will definitely be back!

We slept over at The Lord's Lodge for one night and had an amazing time. The Cottage we stayed in had an awesome view overlooking the valley down to McGregor. There were absolutely nothing that I would want to change... from the cottage, view, food to the service - everything was excellent. Thanks to Colin, Matt and Mari-Louise!
