Detailed Reviews
This beautiful hotel might be old, but it is kept in immaculate condition. It is perfect for weekends in the country, and is the only accom in the village that allows 1 night stays. The hotel is perfectly situated to explore Stanford on foot, with a market on the veranda on Saturdays, a lovely restaurant across the road, and the river a short walk away.
Cleanliness levels were excellent and the details that matter (quality of cotton bedding, down duvets etc) all exceeded expectations for such affordable lodgings. The courtyard inside, with its huge willow, is for guests only which allows for a charming retreat and relaxation area. We loved the honesty bar for those times at night when you remember that you've all forgotten to get drinks! The wooden floors and generous bathrooms in the hotel are some of the details that I love.

+1
We spent two night in the double bedroom suite at this Hotel in the quaint and peaceful village of Stanford, but a mere 20 minute drive from the larger & busier town of Hermanus ( where we braved the cold Atlantic for a dip in the tidal pool after a coastal walk) . The Hotel is spotlessly clean and well-maintained and the staff helpful and attentive yet unobtrusive. Manager Willem helped us book a glorious sunset river cruise on the Lady Stanford river barge. We did not eat at the Hotel, but this allowed us to sample meals at the various restaurant establishments in the village and otherwise we self-catered using the kitchen & fridge in the communal entertainment area (cheese and preserves from local farms & Goosebumps bread from the OK at the entrance to the village are a great combo).
The double bedroom consists of two bedrooms, one with a double bed & the second with two single beds and a bathroom with a bath only, but lovely local essential oil liquid soap. The linen was high quality & spotless and the beds comfortable.
As two women , we felt extremely safe at the Hotel & on our walks around the village. Parking at the hotel was under shady trees and behind security gates.
We would highly recommend the Stanford Hotel for a wonderful break- close enough to Cape Town for a few days away ( But you will want to stay longer :) and to the amenities of Hermanus, yet far enough to feel that you have truly 'escaped' city life.

what a wonderful place, with kind kind people who went out of their way for me. Penny the owner and Willem looked after us like we were family. They went out of their way for us and I could not be more grateful. God will bless them for helping us out in a time of need. Its a gorgeous little hotel. Stay with pleasure with these angels

We had booked for two nights but stayed only for one. We had the family suite which is advertised as having two bedrooms, one with a queen, the other with twin beds. Actually, the second room only had one single bed and a crib. The minute we entered the front room we were hit by the smell of mould. There were two corners in the top of this room that had black mould; in one corner the mould had eaten through the ceiling and had been covered with a bit of netting. As there were no other rooms available, we left after the first night. The manager said they would be “looking in to it”.
That being said, the whole set up of the hotel is charming in a lovely old-fashioned way, the rooms and cottages spread out along a courtyard with tables and chairs to sit outside. I suppose the other rooms won’t have the same problem, but at the moment I really can’t recommend the family suite.

I went there without notice and not at the most popular time (after 8pm) and still got a friendly welcome and a great room. Nicely furnished, big bed, modern bathroom. I got very friendly suggestions for walks and had a good time in Stanford. Host is friendly and professional with a personal touch.
If I ever come back to Stanfort, I will stay there.

The woman Penny who runs it was arrogant and downright nasty. Understand this... I am a professional from New York City. I have traveled to over 70 countries and I never had a woman be so rude. (Perhaps she's not used to dealing with people of color. Otherwise, she might be very lovely).
Anyway, she showed a room then just asked us to leave without explanation. She was down nasty! I was traumatized by the experience.

Tony Kirkland. You have gone to a lot of trouble to cover all social media platforms with your malicious racism allegation. Before you even arrived on my premises, your conduct and behaviour at our local tourism office with a young lady who was trying to assist you, was completely inappropriate and unacceptable. Your drunk and disorderly conduct on my premises while I was showing you our last remaining room available was disgusting. You were the first person I have turned away from my premises in 15 years. Your uncouth behaviour was reported to our local police station minutes after you left. Using cyber platforms like this to malign people who will not tolerate your conduct is nothing short of cowardly.

I was part of a group of 3 who booked a cottage on Air B&B. The AirB&B advert was very misleading and so the couple I stayed with relocated me to the Stanford Hotel down the road. IT WAS ONE OF THE BEST HOTEL STAYS EVER!!! Penny and David are the most gracious, authentic and amazing hosts. The room was clean and quiet with everything I needed. This morning when checking out, I got a tour of the amazing old bar area which has been made into a little Heritage Museum and heard some amazing history of this hotel. Almost wished I didn't have to go to a 50th birthday celebration as I would have loved to try one of DAvid's steak evenings down the road. Can't recommend enough - just delightful!

We spent a weekend at the hotel.
If my daughter feels comfortable than we know we have made the right choice.
It is the right side of rustic and you feel very at home.
I liked that there was secure parking and the family room was spacious.
The host was very accommodating and nothing is to bigger ask.
If you can try the steak only restaurant linked to the hotel, It is superb.

Classic Whitewashed walls, high ceilings, and wooden floors. Simple furnishings...spotlessly clean, and great linen on the bed!
Breakfast was good coffee, and a muffin. Perhaps wander down the road(hotel is central in the village) and sit and do a leisurely breakfast elsewhere....perhaps the bakery at the top of the street!
I loved it though, and have booked again for another night in X2 weeks!

Thank you so much for this lovely review Lynne. Please remember that the hotel does cater for a full two course breakfast as an optional extra. We give this choice because many guests prefer to skip breakfast altogether or wish to visit one of the many coffee shops in the village. We are totally adaptable and you can not only book your breakfast, but you can also book the time that you would like it served. We even spoil you with breakfast in bed if you wish.

Booking accommodation in Stanford is not easy. The booking sites don't all have members there and the Stanford Info Centre has to email accommodation providers and wait for them to respond. Out of time constraints I started to contact places myself and chose the Stanford Hotel. We were initially allocated a room out the back which was sparsely furnished and completely painted out in white, including the floor, it was like a cell and as cold! No bath only a shower.
The next day we were moved to a family unit which was a great improvement and had this happened upon our arrival would have changed our opinion of the place.
Never the less, the rate of R950 pppn was outrageous for the winter season and had I had the time to research alternative accommodation would definitely have found better.

Firstly our rates are not R950 pppn. Our rates are R950 incl VAT per room per night for two people sharing. Secondly, Neville, himself, booked Room 8 on line, but stipulated he wanted self-catering. Room 8 is not self-catering, so when Neville and his wife arrived, we upgraded them, at no extra charge, to our only available self-catering unit for two called Sixpence cottage. It is our most popular cottage and most certainly does not fit the description given by Neville, who also booked a room with a shower not a bath. After complaining of being cold the following morning, Neville and his wife were immediately upgraded to a four sleeper cottage, once again at no extra charge. We also made dinner reservations, as requested, at the very popular and fully booked, bistro across the road for Neville. This bistro goes out of their way to accommodate our guests so it was very disappointing to learn that Neville did not show up and nor did he cancel his booking.
