The Lodge is about 3.5 hour drive from Cape Town on a very well-kept highway (the N2) that winds through farm land and small towns with plenty of gas stations and rest stops along the way.. We booked a two night stay with two Family Lodge rooms for us and our two grown children. The rooms are luxurious and clean, with great African decor. We were met at front desk by friendly staffers who offered us some sparkling wine, then checked into our rooms, which are directly across from 2 beautiful pools and a poolside bar, all overlooking the grounds of the reserve--a gorgeous view. Our stay featured two breakfasts and dinners plus tea, coffee and biscotti in early mornings before first game drive. Meals are served buffet style in a beautiful dining room with a great African theme. While some of the food wasn't the greatest, there were plenty of choices and great dining room staff. We did a morning and early evening game drive each day with our guide Hano, who was knowledgeable and friendly and we learned so much about the amazing animals we saw during each 2+ hour drive on the reserve grounds. While the animals are not necessarily as much in a natural habitat as what you may see in Kruger, they do roam wild and live much as they would in a larger park. We saw lions, cheetahs (plus a baby cheetah!) elephants, zebras, rhinos, ostriches, giraffes (from afar) and much much more. Really an incredible experience. My wife and daughter used the spa for massages (I did not) while I lounged by the beautiful pool and they were quite impressed. If you have ever stayed at a Disney property, you know the level of their service is the absolute pinnacle, and I say this place is in that category. Not to mention that it was quite affordable compared to places in US. Overall, highly recommended!

We had a 1 night stay over new year and it was a fantastic experience. Our package included accommodation, dinner, breakfast and x2 game drives for £205, which was superb value.

We stayed in a bush view chalet which was small but perfectly adequate for 1 night. The air con was effective and the minibar bar well stocked. The seating area had gorgeous views over the valley and it was lovely to sit on the balcony with a glass of wine watching dusk settle. We struck lucky and had chalet 28 which wasn't overlooked and had uninterrupted views (we could also hear the hippos splashing about in the nearby watering hole at night). Other chalets were significantly less private and did not have clear views. Be warned that the walk from the car park with heavy luggage can be a bit of mission and would not suit anyone with mobility issues.

The infinity pool was lovely and had a hot jacuzzi area, which was great. Towels are provided. There are plenty of loungers as it gets busy quickly. We arrived before check in so we could make the most of our stay and have a few hours by the pool before our game drive.

The game drives were good fun and we saw plenty of wild animals. Our guide, Kevin, was friendly and knowledgeable and made the experience even more special. Because of government restrictions the evening game drive had to be moved forward to 4pm. We then had to go straight to dinner at 6pm as the restaurant closed at 8pm. This made it all a bit rushed, but it was completely out of the control of the lodge and they were clearly doing the best they could. I would recommend contacting the lodge before you arrive to check the times of the drives so you can time your arrival accordingly (it would be a shame to miss out on the pool).

Dinner was served in the large open plan dining area and you were seated at tables that corresponded with your chalet number. The atmosphere was like a canteen and there were lots of children running around: not a romantic or intimate setting, but perfectly adequate. Food was decent (albeit mass catered and not piping hot). The breakfast menu was impressive, but service was very slow. We came straight from the dawn drive at 9am had to rush to make the check out time of 10.30am. We paid for lunch at the pool when we checked in and the food was fantastic (the chicken salad in particular was delicious).

All in all it was a lovely experience and I would highly recommend.

Good Afternoon shoegal1 Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. Reading through you review highlighted a lot of positive experiences and I'm please we were able to exceed your expectation and become a destination that you definitely recommend to others. I must agree with your statement above that certain elements of the new curfew have thrown a spanner in the works however in order for us to have minimal impact on our guest experience adjustments have been made to reduce this impact. Without fully understanding the impact of the pandemic would have on occupancy levels earlier in the year it was great to see people such as yourselves taking the time to spend a few days with us during season. Breakfast would have usually had a buffet style breakfast to reduce preparation time of a la carte meals and our new plated meals to minimize congestion and ensure social distancing this has led to our new style of breakfast service. We are being very positive going forward and have fantastic plans to expand and elevate the property to offer new experiences and enhance the existing ones. With construction planned for the future, reserve expansions and dining and other activities being constantly tweaked we are all very excited to see where the future takes Garden Route Game Lodge. once again thank you for the fantastic review. We definitely had a better season than expected and I thank you for the support and I do hope we see you in the future and share some of the amazing new additions with you. Best wishes and kind regards Malcolm .

What an amazing destination! Perfect for families with young kids. From arrival we felt at home, knowledgeable, friendly and professional staff. The Lodge is clean and well maintained.
Dinner pleasant and breakfast spread just amazing.
We got to see a cheetah kill on our game drive, our guide was great!
Covid protocol is spot on with small extra like sanitizer on the tables to make you feel comfortable at all times.
We highly recommend this property

My wife and I had a very enjoyable time when we visited the Garden Route Game Lodge. We arrived just after lunch and were able to relax before the first safari which left at 5pm. Our driver was so informative and so helpful that he made the whole experience something to remember. Dinner was a huge selection of meats and chicken and fish and salads all beautifully cooked and made. Even the electricity going off halfway though our meal wasnt enough to spoil the occasion. Next morning we were up bright and early to head off again targeting the animals we hadnt seen the night before, again this didnt disappoint.
If I was to have a small moan is that the bush chalets are extremely small and theres only room really for one suitcase but as we were only in there to sleep it wasnt enough to get overly upset about.
Overall we had a great time and would encourage anyone travelling to Cape Town to make the trip out, its worth it

This game lodge went over and above our expectations. Every person that worked at the lodge, from reception, tour guides, to bellman and management were courteous, helpful and willing to go that extra mile. With the COVID-19 forcing an early closure we expected the lodge to be understaffed, the food to be limited and the tours to be cut back. Were we ever wrong it was quite the opposite. We asked if we could move our room closer so we could see the watering hole instead, they upgraded us to a luxury suite at no charge. The room was beautiful, the amenities were amazing, the view from our balcony was majestic to see the animals roaming, and the food was spectacular. We spent two nights there and got the four safari package. After our second tour we had seen most the animals except for the giraffes as they are kept in the area that can be over 45 minutes away. My husband asked if there was anyway we could see them on our third tour. The lodge arranged it and we saw the giraffes that evening. It was spectacular. We were only able to participate in three safaris as we had to head to the airport early. But on the safaris we saw hippos, cheetahs, zebras, Buffalo, elephants, Lions, giraffes,.and many more. Definitely our highlight was watching the family of cheetahs chasing the zebras. The best part is when the zebras turned and chased the cheetahs. And we were able to get it on film what an amazing memory for us. On our second night during dinner, this was the second to last night before closing, a waiter brought around a bar cart with complimentary after dinner drinks to our table. Again going that extra mile when they know they have to close within 24 hours. We will definitely be back but will stay longer so we have time to use their infinity pool and spa. We highly recommend that you make the garden route game lodge a part of your bucket list, you won’t be disappointed. Erin & Kilmer

Good Afternoon erinmN8973FX Thank you very much for the amazing feedback. Despite the current situation regarding lock down we are committed to offering guests who stay with us a Garden Route Game Lodge the most amazing experience. I wouldn't be surprised if the rangers these days are more excited than our guests to get into the wilderness and enjoy all that they had missed out on for the last few months. It is great to hear that every encounter you experienced with one of our staff members left such a great impression. Its unique experiences such as yours that remind us what a positive impact every detail has on ones visit. The reserve is currently full of greenery and beautiful spots of colour as the spring flowers are slowly starting to push through after last weeks rainfall. It is as if the reserve had a new lease of life. Thank you once again for your wonderful review. The team will be delighted to hear you fantastic feedback. Best Wishes Malcolm General Manager

We really enjoyed this game lodge. The lodge entrance, curio shop, dining room, pool area, and the individual chalets were all in prime condition - clean, up-to-date, and attractive.

We overnighted in a chalet, which was small enough to be cozy, but cute and clean with a great view of the game lands. The TV was equipped with only an antenna, so there were few options on it, but there is good wifi, so we didn't mind. The water pressure was fantastic and hot water availability was constant, with soft towels and cozy cotton robes for use. The A/C worked excellently and the bed and furnishings were very comfortable.

The food at the dining room was some of the best I've had at a resort like this. They have vegetarian options, but the steak I had was great and the service was excellent.

The safari at the lodge was very good. Our guide, Abie, was extremely knowledgeable about the animals and the history of the preserve. He worked hard to get us good views of the animals and to make sure we were comfortable during our outings. If you've been to other preserves, this one seems small (because it is), but we were able to see all the animals we'd hoped for. And this preserve does a good job of keeping their animals healthy and well off. I recommend this lodge and the safari!

We booked an overnight trip at the Garden Route Game Lodge when on a family holiday in Cape Town. The lodge arranged for us to be collected from our hotel by private transfer. It’s a long drive from Cape Town, approx. 4 hours, but our driver Sbu made it most enjoyable. He was very informative and told us many interesting things about Cape Town and South Africa along the way. He was so friendly to our children too and kept asking if we needed him to stop for anything.

We arrived at approx 2.30 and checked in. We were pleasantly surprised by the our room and bathroom, both were finished to a high standard.

After checking in we ate lunch and went for a quick swim before getting ready for our evening safari. Our guide went above and beyond to ensure we had the best experience we could possibly have, going to great lengths to track down the mother cheetah along with her cubs. We also got to see rhinos, zebras, ostriches, springboks and hippos.

After our safari we had dinner which was included in our package. It was a little disappointing, the selection was poor and food wasn’t a great standard. I found lunch much more enjoyable and although it wasn’t included in our package I was happy to pay to be able to order what I liked.

The next morning it was raining as we set of on our safari and was a lot cooler than the previous evening, but warm ponchos were provided. Again our guide ensured we had a good time, providing us with lots of interesting facts. On our second safari got to see elephants, lions and even a stand-off between a buffalo and the cheetahs! The website states that there are giraffes on the lodge but we did not see these.

After the safari it was time for a pleasant breakfast before checking out. The rain had long since cleared by then and the kids were hoping for one last swim but the pools were covered.

Overall we had a great time, I’d recommend arriving early and making the most of the facilities on day one, especially if you have kids who enjoy the pool as on your second day you just get to go on safari, have breakfast and checkout early.

We are delighted that you had such an amazing time on safari and that you managed to see some amazing sightings. Our dinner menus do change on a four day cycle and we would have loved to have hear from you at the time to see if we would have been able to offer you some alternatives. We constantly strive to change our offering to not only meet but wherever possible, exceed our guests expectations. The pool is always a hit for kids and families alike and we pride ourselves on being family friendly in our offering. We hope to see you again soon.

We stayed at the lodge in family room. A bit tight with two kids. The place is quite rundown and in need of maintenance. Staff seem dejected after COVID and unwilling to accommodate any request. Had to ask the duty manager for a tall glass, before it eventually arrived. Carried my own bags from car to the room. Light bulbs out, dirt under the bed and gas cylinder empty on arrival. One therapist on duty at the spa and lodge was full, so not much availability. Had to walk back from spa as golf cart pick up never arrived after 2 calls. Game drives were good and kids loved it. Staff knowledgeable on wildlife, but very defensive of the lodge being ‘zoo like’. Big 5 in such a small space always raises questions especially for people who are regular bush goers.

Good Morning JK763 Thank you for your feedback from you recent visit. We have a lovely selection of family units that offer a different level of luxury depending on your needs. Our luxury family units offer an additional room for the younger members of the family and our standard family units that are recommended for smaller children have the pull out bed options. For a longer staying guests obviously the larger room offer more comfort and space whilst the lodge unit is closer to all of the facilities. It is disappointing to hear that your experience didn't meet your expectations. We absolutely do our best to offer all of our patrons the most amazing experience and sharing what the property has to offer. I have noted your concerns above and have engaged with key staff members to make necessary tweaks to our execution to ensure that all of our guests have the amazing experience we aim to deliver. I certainly believe that your experience was not the norm however is a reminder that we should always be vigilant and do our absolute best to offer sincere hospitality. Thank you again for the feedback it certainly assists in keeping staff on their toes and always striving to excellence Best wishes Malcolm

My family and I went to the lodge to escape city life and to introduce our son to wild life. We stayed in a luxury suite with pool which was worth every cent.

The lodge is beautiful. The staff are friendly. The food is delicious. The accommodation was great. Abie, our guide, was INCREDIBLE.

There are a few things I’ll mention for others reading:

1. If you’ve been to a luxury lodge in Botswana or Zim, don’t go with a mindset of comparison, this is the Western Cape. The drives are amazing as are the animals but the experience is different and it doesn’t present such a “wow look there” factor or element of surprise. I’ve been to many lodges in Bots, Zim, Nam and the likes.. I’d still recommend a visit to GRGL.
2. Be sure to check what’s available, we weren’t aware that night drives had been cancelled due to Covid and we didn’t expect to hear that the spa was fully booked.
3. There are two pools, one is for families and one for adults. This wasn’t clear and upset a number of families when people complained about children. It was the end of the world but it resulted in unnecessary conflict for a number of people and their children.
4. Our biggest disappointment was the manager whom we tried to chat to about the above things and all that we got back was defensive arguments. This was disappointing and we have chalked it down to the manager perhaps being tired or having a tough day.

Please do not take the above points as reasons not to go! We had an incredible time and would definitely go again!

For a 3.5 hour drive from Cape Town, I think you’d find it hard to beat this!

Good Afternoon imodcoza Thank you for sharing your recent experience on trip advsior. I'm pleased to hear that the vast majority of your experience exceeded your expectations and that there was tremendous amounts of value in your visit. We continue to do our best to offer our guests the most amazing experiences and create the most wonderful memories. The lodge has been able to adjust its the current market demands which has given us an opportunity to showcase this beautiful property to our local travelers. The response has been fantastic and our local market often returning for return visits. I must agree that expectations do need to be inline with the reality of how Western Cape reserves are generally managed and the size of these reserves. We are designed to offer a convenient but premium reserve experience in this privately owned establishment. Unlike the extremely large national parks our roaming area is generally smaller however with our intention of expansion when the opportunity arises. We are currently at about 5500ha with a diverse habitat that are ideal for a variety of species. Our recent addition is a beautiful river bed valley that extends to the Gouritz river. Regarding your experience near the pool area. I had engaged personally with our upset guests and made him aware of the fact that due to there being no guests present at the pool at the time the children wanted to use the facility, permission was given under the circumstances that it did not interfere with other guests. the engagement lead to an understanding going forward. I did engage with the management team following the incident to ensure that all of our guests have sufficient information and there expectations managed appropriately to avoid any disappointment. The highlight of my read was to hear that once again Abie has proven to be an amazing asset to our team. I will certainly share your review with him. Many thank and we look forward to welcoming you back in the near future. Best wishes Malcolm

This place is all about friendly service. The chalets are small with everything you might need, not that you spend a lot of time inside.
The game drives are well organized with one guide for duration of your stay. They are very knowledgeable and friendly. On cold days the poncho's and hot water bottles come out.
The food is of a very high quality with good size portions.
Wine and beer to satisfy anyone.
Waiters are very professional with good advice.
One pools is heated and the other not.
This is not the place to go to loose weight, this is the place to go to loose your worries.

Hi, yes there a plenty of towns with Petrol Stations with conveniences and good coffee and food, also some wayside local cafes with all of above - but with a Sth African vibe. The roads are excellent and trip took about 4.5 hrs with 2 stops - we had a driver organised by Game Lodge. Game drives were at 4pm and 7am and go for around 2 hrs, give or take. The evening drive ends with a drink and nibbles out on the drive overlooking the beautiful park, then you return to a bonfire and traditional music by the hut bar - magic. Ps...not laughing at all, on one evening the bumpy drive back was almost my undoing!! Def go before you go 😉

Are predator and prey animals separated by fences, or do all animals roam together?

Some animals roam together but there is segregation between key animals to protect them. The lions are in their own segregated area and do not hunt for their food - this is because they have come from other reserves and have not been taught to hunt. The animals seem to be exceptionally well cared for.

apparently they do have girraffe, but unfortunately we did not see them,as our guide said that they tend to got further down into the valley sometimes and we were only there for a night with evening and morning game drives... If we had had time to stay an extra night and gone on a game walk with our guide, then we would have seen them in the lower valley...
