Our most recent timeshare exchange took us to the KZN South Coast to revisit the resorts we visited as young adults and as kids with our parents.

Accompanied by our son and his family, we set out early on a crisp winter's morning - destination Banana Beach Club resort in Melville, KwaZulu-Natal south coast. Traffic was relatively light, and we made good time, even with the suggested stops every two hours, to have a leg stretch and a bite to eat.

Upon arrival, check-in went very smoothly, and we were pleasantly surprised with our unit, which would act as a home base for our exploration. Very light and spacious, with all the necessary amenities for a comfortable stay.

We spent the following day stocking up with supplies and additional preparation for the rest of our stay.

Our first excursion took us to Amanzimtoti, where I believe we spent most of our holidays as a kid. Unfortunately, I could not recall much, but a good experience nonetheless. We had to cancel our planned visit to Winkelspruit due to delays introduced by roadworks to repair damage caused by the recent flooding experienced in the province.

Next on our itinerary were Mtwalume and Hibberdene, where we spent our teenage holidays. While I don't recall any definite memories, I feel a strong connection with Mtwalume and would like to return one day.

We then had a "rest" day and spent the day at our base, allowing me the time to visit the beach at our resort and capture some photographs.

Our last trip took us to Uvongo and Margate, where we took our young kids for holidays as young adults. It was good to see that nothing much has changed since our last visit.

I was happy to revisit all the places that made a big impression on me as a kid, and we are looking forward to spending holidays there with our kids, but as grandparents now.

We stayed on the RCI points exchange for the weekend. The unit was tidy and clean. It was very functional, our unit had a bit of a sea view. The entertainment area is great for the kids. It is also great to be able to walk down to the beach. We had a beach wagon with all the beach stuff and could easily pul it all onto the beach in a short walk. The tidal pool is great for the kids.

The one night our neighbour started blaring music, which was promptly sorted by the friendly staff upon bringing it to their attention. Overall a very nice stay.

Amazing stay with friendly and attentive staff.

The bigger units are very spacious and all newly renovated.

Our unit had a beautiful sea view with a huge veranda

The beach across the road are not the best but has a tidal pool where kids can swim.

I absolutely love visiting this resort. My third time in as many years and I already can't wait to go back.

I love the facilities on offer that keep not only myself and partner entertained but brought such joy to our 4yo son. He is absolutely obsessed with the waterslide and he actually learned to swim confidently with independence at this resort on our previous visit.

What an amazing experience it was for us to book the @ease cinema at the resort for our son's first cinematic experience. And what a relief too, as he had no concept of cinema etiquette, but I didn't have glares at his constant chatter as it was our very own private screening.

We'll see you again soon, if he had it his way it would be every weekend!!

Nice clean resort. Apartments at the top of the hill has nice sea views, but a bit cramped, especially with rainy days, and stairs are botehersome with kids. Would rather book different chalets next time.

Great pool, kids loved the slide. The games machines did not work, and the staff did not really give any assistance when we told them.

The beach is great. Walk is quite a distance if you have a bunch of stuff to carry...and not short enough distance to run up and down every time you forgot something. The tidal pool and rock pools are great, kids were entertained the whole day.... prefered this beach to Margate.

We might just be back again.

The beach at banana beach club is fantastic. There is an awesome tidal pool with wonderful rock pools for the kids to play in. The beach itself is spectacular but it is not a swimming beach. The units have been recently refurbished and staff are very friendly. The bunk bed was a huge hit with my daughter. I am looking forward to returning.

Very modern rooms with braais on the patios as well as around the resort, 500 m from swimming beach, staff are friendly and shops nearby. Opposite railway line so don't stay here if you don't like trains passing ( noise) , beach has lifeguards only in high season but you can drive to blue flag beaches along the coast.

We booked here through a RCI Exchange--Banana Beach Resort is not worth the RCI ranking. The unit was in real need of an upgrade/maintenance. The location of the unit was very poor--in the middle of several other closely spaced units, no sea view, no dining facilities other than a table outside in an enclosure under a roof--exposed to the weather conditions (which bad but this is not the fault of the facility). The lounge very badly equipped.

We will not be back under any circumstances.

Our family has visited the resort on an annual basis for the past 7 years - we are never disappointed. Affordable, comfortable accommodation. We have stayed in both the rondavels and chalets - for as our kids have grown the chalet is a lot more spacious. Close to the beach, with a tidal pool and plenty of rock pools to explore. Whales are often seen during this time. On miserable weather days Shelley Centre is close by for movies. About an hours drive from Durban so day visits to Ushaka etc can easily be planned. Resort is always well maintained and any problems attended to promptly. Staff are friendly and helpful. When your children are remembered by name by the staff year after year you know it definitely is a home away from home.

Clean, well maintained and spacious. Friendly staff. Beautiful view with the sound of the waves being a bonus. The stroll to the beach and watching the sun rise was magical. A lovely place to escape to and unwind, absolute food for the soul.I shall be back!
