The guesthouse is set in a beautiful large tropical garden in Riverview, a peaceful suburb to Mtubatuba only 20 minutes away from the craft markets and beaches of St. Lucia, the world famous Hluhluwe/Umfolozi Game Reserve, and of course South Africa’s first World Heritage Site, the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. A warm hospitable welcome awaits you in this charming country style home that offers 4 star luxury en-suite bed & breakfast accommodation for tourists, as well as corporate guests needing peaceful and comfortable accommodation on their travel. A delicious full English breakfast is included, and in the evening you can enjoy some of the finest cuisine in our restaurant and relax with good fellowship around Tony’s Private Bar. With our central location for exploring Zululand in KwaZulu-Natal a part of the accommodation service we offer is to assist our guests in the planning of tours and safaris to get the most of their time. The main tours and safaris starts from our doorstep and are undertaken by experienced guides from Zululand Aquatic & Animal Adventures which have a sound knowledge of the abundant wildlife of the Hluhluwe/Umfolozi Game Reserve and the iSimangaliso Wetland Park.

Set in a beautiful tropical garden, Wendy’s is a little oasis. Our beautifully appointed room and bathroom were a delight. Sitting in the perfectly ironed cotton robe on my little balcony drinking tea was just the recuperation I needed. The friendly staff team provided great food and were very flexible. I was sorry to leave.

We booked 3 nights at Wendy's on the strength of a recommendation in the TA forums. The location in particular appealed to us as it was between the Hluhluwe Game Park and the Isimangoleso Wetland Park. Sure enough, it worked really well for seeing both.

Wendy's is set in a residential area in Mtubatuba. We didn't particularly like Mtubatuba but we didn't spend any time there as we booked dinner for our first night at Wendy's and the food was so good that we ate all our meals there. The lodge is set in very pretty gardens. Our room was one of the luxury ones with a small kitchenette which we didn't really use except the fridge. Our favourite part of the room was the small patio overlooking the gardens where we enjoyed having a beer at the end of our day. There is a small pool which I had a quick dip in once but it wasn't very appealing as it is too small to have a proper swim in and, to be honest, it always looked a bit grubby - but I think that's probably a consequence of being surrounded by lovely gardens as leaves and insects can easily fall into the pool.

As mentioned before, the food was great! There isn't any choice but we're not fussy eaters and we enjoyed fillet steak on our first evening, smoked pork on the second and fish on the third. Breakfasts were also good with fresh fruit, yogurt and cereal to start with and then cooked breakfast after that. Wendy and Gavin are very friendly and sociable and joined us each evening. On our third night, they hosted a dinner party and we were automatically included! This might not suit everyone but we found it interesting and enjoyed chatting to their friends.

On our middle day we booked Gavin to take us on a game drive and this was very successful. Apart from the very early start (necessary in order to have the best chance of seeing predators) we really enjoyed our day with Gavin who was very knowledgeable about the wildlife. He was also great in finding virtually everything we wanted to see including hyena and lions!

We were sad to leave Wendy's and would definitely return for more game viewing in Hluhluwe. However, we then moved on to St Lucia and found it to be better placed for the Wetland Park which we drove through on our own.

Thank you very much for your review Morag. We really appreciate the time taken to do this and always take the feedback into positive consideration. We thoroughly enjoyed our time with you both and loved our chats in the evenings. We look forward to welcoming you back in the future. P.S. The offending palm next to the pool has thankfully now been removed :-)

Located in a gated area gives you a feeling of security. From the owners, manager, kitchen staff, in fact everyone we came into contact with, we received superb service. Would have loved to have used the sparkling pool but did not want to upset the other guests, lol. The rooms are functional with all the add on’s you may need. All meals were well prepared and delicious. We do not have huge appetites though so we found the amount of food provided a little excessive. In all, a lovely three nights enjoyed with very hospitable people. Thanks again Gavin and Jenny.

Very friendly and helpful staff and a convenient location for exploring the wider area including Hluhluwe and St Lucia/iSimangaliso. We loved the honesty bar, the evening meeting ups with other guests in the bar area and the lovely dinners for those that wanted to eat in. Breakfasts we also great. Many rooms open out directly into the delightful tropical gardens with the result that you are not aware that there are any other properties in the area.

We were given a very warm welcome to Wendy’s Country Lodge both on arrival and throughout our stay. Very comfortable rooms and guest areas, all of which were kept sparklingly clean and with Wi-Fi access. Breakfasts were fantastic and for our day trips we were kindly provided with excellent packed breakfasts to take with us due to our early start. We used the pool and took dinner with other guests and our hosts every night of our 4 night stay as well as joining in with pre dinner chat in the bar. We took advantage of 2 local tours (game drive and hippo boat trip) both arranged efficiently by the lodge manager Louwrina. These trips were really excellent and we had a great time despite some early morning rain at times. We would highly recommend this as a base to explore the local area or just to relax and enjoy the wonderful ambience.

As an elderly married couple, we were so well looked after by the Management and Staff. We were visiting in perhaps the worst time of year for heat and humidity in KwaZulu-Natal, February, 20 and 21 this year. they have both airconditioners and ceiling fans in each room and a pool in the gardens, so we could stay cool.

The breakfasts are superb and dinner is available on request and we enjoyed the selection on the two nights we were there. The rooms are very well appointed and a cool shower before bed was exquisite and the beds extremely comfortable.

As a base for day trips to iSimangaliso National Parks (West and East) Shores and Hluhluwe Game Reserve it is ideal. A good value for money Lodge in which to stay.

Wendy’s Country Lodge is situated in Riverview Mtubatuba. A tropical oasis with comfortable accommodation and very tasty cuisine.
Gavin, Jenny and staff welcome you as you arrive and are there to make your stay a memorable one.
Wendy’s is the perfect base for visiting the various Zululand reserves or as a stopover on your way to or from Durban.
If you just feel like getting away for a weekend, lying by the pool and relaxing, then it’s also perfect.
We really enjoyed our stay last week and hope to be back soon!

We stayed at the Riverview cottage earlier this month with some friends and used the self catering home as our base to explore the area and local game parks. The cottage was very well equipped, clean and had everything we required for a relaxing stay. Although we didn't stay at the main lodge we did get to meet Louwrina who was in contact with us even on our way to Mtubatuba to check on our arrival time and to find out if we required breakfast or dinner bookings. Our hosts Gavin Jenny were very welcoming and knowledgeable, we had a few drinks in their bar at the main lodge and we were made to feel like long lost friends, Gavin used to work close to where we live so we knew many of the same people, we will definitely be back.

Not exaggerating: This truly was the best accommodation of our whole holiday, in every perspective. Nice and spacy rooms with comfy beds, beautiful garden with outside pool, great common areas like living room and bar to meet with other people and fantastic dinner. But most importantly the hospitality of the owners, Jenny and Gavin, was absolutely amazing. They took us in like we were part of their family. They are taking very good care of their guests, preparing the perfect meals even taking into account any complicated allergies, sharing their stories and we had a lot of fun together. I would recommend Wendy’s country lodge to everybody coming to South Africa and this will be the first place I book when I’m visiting South Africa again. Jenny and Gavin, thanks so much for everything, hope to see you again soon!

We cannot recommend this unique lodge too highly, from the idyllic gardens, outdoors terraces and pool to the intimate interior, furnished with beautiful family heirlooms. Gavin and Jenny are warm and welcoming hosts, prepared to go many extra miles to ensure that guests become friends and part of their family. Both breakfast and dinner are excellent. It’s certainly worth braving an early morning wake/up call to explore the nearby Mfolozi game reserve with Gavin whose knowledge of the fauna and flora of the area reflects his love of this unspoilt corner of KZN. Wendy’s is also the perfect base for exploring the many nearby parks and beaches, ensuring that every moment of a longer stay is filled with memorable experiences. Well done Gavin, Jenny and your special staff on maintaining your superb standards year after year.
