Detailed Reviews
I arrived with the expectation to see the river from the hotel – or at least have a view of the river from the rooms or dining area. No such luck! But, what I did get at the hotel was a spacious and clean room, well maintained and situated amongst trees, beautiful gardens and a serene atmosphere. Complimentary wi-fi did not reach my room – but the signal is strong in the dining room and reception area. The hotel offers a decent size pool and nice pathways for walks. Bar service was not great – to the extent that I felt sorry for the barman who tried to cut a lemon on a saucer using a knife taken from the dining room! Check in was easy with a friendly receptionist.
Breakfast was served without any issue –not a buffet due to the limited number of guests, but I could order standard breakfast items from the menu. Check out was smooth. Overall, a good experience and recommended.

En-route to the hotel, you travel on gravel which will cast some doubt in your mind on weather you are lost or have taken a wrong turn. We stayed close to the main reception so on route to the pool felt it is was miles away. Room is basic with NO bar fridge. The shower has no privacy apart from a see through glass door, felt a bit weird.

This is in the Marriott hotel family so you can get points. We were in a tour group that all checked in at the same time. We choose to go to dinner before showering. I think that’s why I didn’t have hot water for my shower (although everyone else did.) Also 1 room (I believe it was 12 or 14) didn’t have a shower – only a tub. So if that’s important, be sure to ask. Dinner was a buffet which had quite a few choices: lamb roast, pork roast, curry chicken legs, fish, potato salad, beets, butternut squash, lettuce, roasted potatoes, fresh fruit cocktail, pineapple, custard, & cake. Unfortunately, nothing was marked so there was a lot of “What is this?” required. But the staff was very helpful & didn’t mind. However I still would have preferred to just be able to read what the food was. There was only internet in the public areas. It was VERY slow but again that was probably because our entire tour group was there trying to upload photos, etc. The rooms themselves were very interesting. The ones I saw were separate buildings that held 4 rooms. Ours had 2 double beds. Another inconvenience was the bathroom area was not blocked off. The toilet & shower were in private stalls but the walls were glassy so light got out. This was an inconvenience because I usually wake for an hour or so in the middle of the night & go into the bathroom to read or play on the computer. I could not do that without disturbing my husband with the light. There was a pool area with what looked like a large toddler pool & an adult pool. One item that could be an issue with anyone with mobility or breathing issues was the separate buildings were spread out around the compound so you could have to walk quite a way down (&, of course, then back up). If this is a concern be sure to specify when you make your reservation. There were also no USB ports in the room.

This hotel was a great disappointment. There is no braaing allowed, No safes in the room. Besides for the pool there was nothing to do. Our bed underneath had spider webs and was dirty from previous occupants. (sweet wrappers). Our room had no privacy two queen beds with no wall for the toilet and shower. just the glass doors. Also the website said kitchenette with silverware . We had 1 teaspoon for 4 people and only 2 cups and a kettle.

This place has single handedly tarnishing the Protea hotel brand for us. It was by far the worst hotel experience of our lives. The toilet didn't work properly. Aircon made so much noise we had to switch it off even though it was crazy hot. The first room had such a bad smell we had to change it, the second room was not much better either. The food was stale and unbelievably old. The water is horrible and should not be ingested but no one bothers to tell the guests. The wifi did not work. The staff was beyond rude and unprofessional, I doubt they have had any professional training and definitely have no interpersonal skills. The only reason we didn't check out emmidiately was because we could not find other accommodation in within +-230km and since it was late we could not risk traveling any further with a child. The cherry on top of it all was the baby snake my husband killed outside our room... go to this place at your own risk, the mother is probably looking for her child.

We stayed at this hotel during a recent Gate 1 tour. The hotel is nice with lush surroundings. The breakfast buffet was average, the room was average...but clean. The hotel is remote and quiet. It was OK for the price point.

It was so quiet. We only spent one night here but I would have liked more time here. It is very cute and secluded feeling property. I especially enjoyed the tree in the driveway area full of weaver birds. The birds are beautiful but I what drew me to the tree was the nests and the fact that the male builds the nests to woo the females. The rooms at this hotel are clean and I had no complaints about the room nor bathroom. The food was good. Internet only works in the lobby.

I had the experience of staying at this hotel as part of a Gate 1 trip to South Africa. This hotel is located halfway between the Sta. Lucia Estuary and the Hluhluwe Game Preserve both of which were on our itinerary so this seemed the ideal hotel to stay in although both attractions were around 30 km from the hotel. A welcome drink was provided to us when we arrived and that was very refreshing and welcome after the activities we had that day. The hotel grounds were spacious and allowed us to explore. We found lots of birds nests on the trees that surrounded the hotel. The pool area wasn't very clean. We were not able to partake of the buffet breakfast that came with our package since we had an early departure to get to the Hluhluwe Game Preserve early but they provided us with an impressive breakfast in a box.

I checked into this hotel with a group and was given a room which was stuffy and did not smell clean. I requested a room change but was told that the hotel was fully booked. The manager suggested airing the room and adding some air refresher.
I went online and saw that there has availability. No sure why the manager wanted to have us stuck in a room which was below par.
Be careful when booking at this hotel.

I only stayed for one night and it was ok. The positives would be the nice and friendly staff and the buffet for dinner. The buffet during dinner had some items that I really enjoyed. My room was very basic. I understand there are not many choices for accomodations in the area, so this place was just adequate- don't expect too much.

I really do not know. We phoned them. I browsed but could not find an e-mailaddress either ....

Chesterfield, Missouri, United States26 contributions29 helpful votesAre there hair dryers in the room?
Suzy, there were dryers but the hotel is not well maintained and a bit of a disappointment so ensure that it works!
Not that I'm aware. You should ask your housekeeper if they can or know of another who can wash your clothes. We've done that in the past and they are always done well and they appreciate the extra income.
