Giannoulis - Cavo Spada Luxury Resort & Spa is well-regarded by guests for its spacious and clean rooms, although some mention the decor is a bit dated and there can be noise issues. The cleanliness of the hotel is consistently praised, as is the friendly and professional service. While the location is appreciated for its seaside proximity, a few guests consider it somewhat isolated for local excursions. The atmosphere is deemed comfortable and relaxing, yet the value for money is questioned by travelers facing extra service charges. The amenities, including clean pools and ample sunbeds, are a hit, but additional fees and towel quality receive some criticism.

My boyfriend and I stayed from the 1st of August till the 10th of August 2021. We had a room with garden/pool view (number 519) and the all inclusive formula. The room could be cleaned every day using a signcard that you leave on the doorhandle. The room was very clean except the mirror in the bathroom (small nitpick for a 5-star hotel :) ). Towels could be replaced up to 2 times a day as there was also a lady going around in all rooms in the evening. Our heartfelt thanks to the housekeeping staff. The main restaurant: well, this was for us an experience never seen before. The food was really sublime, 5-star worthy food in the morning, at noon and in the evening. There was plenty of choice from hot dishes (meat, fish, side dishes, pasta, ...), cold buffet, different types of bread, desserts. The Greek cuisine was especially emphasized, which we found very pleasant. In corona times, measures were also taken such as disinfecting hands before entering, mouth mask and gloves mandatory in the restaurant and buffet area. We have exceptionally seen 1 couple who walked through the buffet without a mouth mask and gloves. So the control by the staff was a bit on the low side, nevertheless there were not many staff members for the occupation of the hotel. Thanks again for the kitchen staff and the service in the restaurant. The sunbeds at the swimming pool were also something we have never seen before: at 10 a.m. still a lot of beds available. All sunbeds were on grass, which is very pleasant for the feet while a heat wave was circulating during this period :) Both pool and sea were equally close and were both wonderful. The pool was great as you can gradually go to the deep end (deepest point is 1.10m). The pool temperature was also very pleasant. We would like to thank the pool staff for the prompt service and friendliness. We have also booked a rental car for 2 days via the reception of the hotel. We had chosen a class C1 (comparable with a VW Polo) and got a Fiat 500c with open roof as an upgrade for the same price. The rental company was Pancar and this person was at the hotel at 8.00 a.m. sharp. We had 10 fantastic relaxing days in this hotel. If you like a holiday without large crowds of tourists in the hotel and want relaxation and peacefulness, this is definitely recommended.

We visited Cavo Spada as a couple looking for a relaxed "Resort week" spoiling ourselves, and that we definitely did.

When travelling the quality of the hotel is of course nice, but what sets different places apart is usually the service.
Having booked this through a local charter travel agent in Sweden, as well as recent reviews missing (logically) due to the pandemic I was my sceptical self as I have high standards (to the amusement and frustration of my travelling companions).

My expectation were blown out of the water.
And what made this an awesome wee is the people working at Cavo Spada that makes all the difference. Mr Kantaras Argyrios and his staff, went out of their way to make our stay both memorable and outstanding.
To be more precise here are some but not all examples: They are always available to cater to your needs (special orders), they are flexible to accommodate any requirements (we got all the help we needed when we changed a reservation) and eager to correct anything that might be out of place (later cleaning of our room when we constantly changed plans).

Some details on the hotel and the facilities. The rooms are large and clean, the AC worked very well during a very hot week even by Greek standards, water pressure (often an issue in the Mediterranean) was good and the beds were comfortable.
Safety during the pandemic was never an issue, keeping distance was easy in all the common areas. In addition where you came in contact with food at the buffet or snack bar a "contactless" way to get plastic gloves on was available and the staff were always using masks.
We stayed in a "pool access room" and the pool is literally to steps from the patio to the room. The pool area is very nicely laid out, with well assorted bar for drinks and coffees.
Apart from the buffet which is of standard assortment but very well prepared, there are two a la Carte restaurants: Sea Lounge (lunch) and Azzurro (Dinner). Both with freshly made and high quality food.

Being active people, we found training facilities way above normal standard even for luxury hotels. This hotel has a fully equipped indoor gym, a fully equipped outdoor gym, tennis court etc.

Finally, to repeat, what made the stay excellent was the staff and the service they provided. Always there to put the cherry on top!
A huge thanks to Antonis, Konstantina, Stefi, Stefane and all the others that made our stay memorable and outstanding.

Went in late October, with Jet2 holidays, for 11 nights, before the hotel was closing for the winter, so some events were finishing. The buffet food was varied and good in the main restaurant and the staff attentive. We booked into the a la Carte twice, where the food was well-presented but a strange mix of ingredients which we didn't take to. Some of the other guests were raving about it however, so maybe just us? The lamb was really good. The pool was very cold but we were livened up by the aqua aerobics sessions, after which, the sea felt quite warm. It is a very short step to the pebbly beach and clear water. You could walk along to Kolymbari, but we took the local bus. As it was late in the year, most shops were closed. One issue we had was that we had booked and paid extra for a room with a sea view and direct access to the pool. The room we were given on the ground floor (114) next to the small walkway from the stairs had no sea view at all due to the partitions between the patios. We were offered another room by the friendly manager but decided to stay where we were. The weather was very good, although several people mentioned that it was unusual for October. All in all, a relaxing holiday which we enjoyed.

Definitely not 5-star quality. Better options elsewhere.

Bad:
1. No HOT WATER for showering during peak times.
2. Annoying dress code in the evening;
3. 13 euro minimum charge for laundry;
4. rooms desperately need updating; no drying wrack in bathroom for clothes; robes and towels looked worn—need to be replaced.
5. prices in the resort are quite expensive—tip, get your drinks from the taverna next door.
6. 10 euro deposit for pool towel and you have to return the towel before the spa closes otherwise you have to keep it with you until the next day.
7. All inclusive drinks do not include top-shelf liquor e.g. you get Gordon’s instead of Tanqueray.
8. bar’s food menu is very limited
9. Laundry was not delivered at the promised time. Had to follow up with reception.
10. rude/aloof staff. Only one person greeted me good morning on one of the days in the breakfast room.
11. Buffet breakfast was greasy
12. Felt like everything had an asterisk e.g. we have towels but you need to pay a deposit. You can dine at the a la carte restaurant but you have to book at least x days in advance... and so on
13. There is not much to do in the surrounding area and a bit scary to walk by yourself when the sun is setting.
14. No poolside or beachside service.
15. Far from airport (and expensive by cab, about 55 euro one way)

Good:
1. Food at the hotels seaside tavern
2. The room service grilled prawns
3. Right by the beach—tip, bring aqua shoes because it’s a pebble beach.
4. Good for those who like physical activities like gym and tennis.

This hotel gets 3 stars mainly because of the natural surrounds, otherwise I’d say it’s a 2 given the price you pay.

When I spoke to locals, they said some of the other nearby resorts were better quality and value for money.

First holiday for 2 years , we researched this and other hotels ,the photos posted on trip advisor were very helpful and led to us selecting a deluxe double room with direct pool access , it had morning sun and afternoon shade. Our room was cleaned daily ,equipped with a minibar , coffee machine ,TV . The bathroom had a separate bath and shower cubicle ,hairdryer and toiletries were provided, it was clean and well presented with fresh towels daily.
There was a bridge to walk to the pool bar which was open til early evening, no loud music just a really relaxing vibe. Breakfast provided plenty of choices of hot and cold options. COVID protections were well thought out and managed with courtesy by restaurant manger Antonious.
We were fortunate to dine at Azzurro and Sea Line restaurants the menus offered a good selection and was delicious especially when accompanied by our choices of red or rose wines. After dinner we enjoyed cocktails in the main bar.
The staff however are what made this such an enjoyable time, prior to arrival I emailed some questions and received prompt and clear responses from Voula . On arrival we were greeted at reception and were shown to our room by the manager Mr Argirios Kantaras . He kept a friendly but constant watch on service for guests to make sure their stay was the best he could make it. Panos at the Pool bar makes great cocktails , is a welcoming and convivial host, Konstantina and Stefi were charming knowledgeable hosts at the Azzurro and again made every effort to ensure our stay was extra special ably supported by Fortis but all the staff from cleaners to other waiting staff always smiled and greeted us and did their work excellently. Last mention to thank Vaso who made sure our last lunch at the Sea Line was served to the usual high standard. Thank you Cavo Spada for a relaxing week.

The hotel is located in a small town in the west of Crete, so you can enjoy peace and quiet. On the other hand, nearby there are bustling towns offering a variety of restaurants, taverns, and shops.
The room was very spacious, with a particularly stylish bathroom, and a balcony with a lovely view of the pool and the sea. Also, a bottle of wine and fresh pastries were waiting for us in the room.
The level of cleanliness in the rooms and in the hotel is high. Every day they clean the room, change towels, and refill a supply of coffee and water.
There's a very good breakfast with everything you need. There is also the option of a full board, but we chose to take only breakfast to enjoy the local restaurants in the area.

And most importantly, the attitude of the staff is simply superb!

Everything we asked for was answered with joy and goodwill to help.

Special thanks to Argirios for doing above and beyond to make our experience perfect. Indeed, it was perfect.
We will definitely be back soon.

Let’s be honest. This hotel isn’t a 5 star hotel. Maybe a 4 star hotel but if you look critically it’s a 3+ star hotel. Let’s start with the positive notes. The rooms are quite big and reasonably clean. The staff is willing to help. The orange juice at the breakfast is really tasty and fresh. Also, the restaurant at the nice looking pool is tasty and affordable.
That doesn’t help much with the critical points. The beds are truly horrific. Way too stiff mattresses. The extra bed on the room is hard as a stone and sleeping one night on it made me feel like being beaten up by a bouncer.
The room we booked was Superior Sea View and the bell boy called this one of the best rooms. As you can see the room is located closely to the airconditioning units as well as the restaurants obstructing the sea view. The rooms are also a few hundred meters away from the sea so I don’t think this can be called “superior”. Additionally there isn’t any sun whatsoever on the terrace. Also is the balcony railing obstructing the view when using the sun beds.
We ordered only breakfast which was very disappointing. The bread and croissants are stale and dry, the breakfast is every day nearly identical and it totally lacks inspiration. The cook who makes the eggs isn’t willing to make an omelet on the day he makes scrambled eggs and vv. This has really nothing to do with a 5 star hotel. The breakfast room is extremely noisy and airconditioned which, in combination with its boring interior, looks more like a school canteen. Please note that this hotel is dominated by Danes, Danes and more Danes.
The pool is gorgeous to loo at but freezing cold. I haven’t seen any adult using the pool because the water is just extremely cold. Buying a drink at the pool is an expensive affair. We paid 10 euro (!) for a G&T in a plastic cup that wasn’t good either. 10 euro is a ridiculous price for such a lousy G&T.
Crete offers much better hotels than this one. If you find a bargain and look at this at a 4 star hotel, it could be acceptable.

Just came home from the most amazing stay here,

We had a room with the private swim up pool which was just the best, our room was spacious, loved the olive oil toiletries I even purchased some to bring home.
Change of bath towels twice a day and free bottles of water every morning delivered to your room. Mini bar was lovely choice (not free but not expensive prices) the cleaners were lovely and kind and came in everyday,
Dressing gowns and slippers were also a treat.

Pool towels can be hires for 10 euros each from the spa which was fab.

We only used the main buffet restaurant but we cannot fault it,
The choice of food and desserts everyday was great, (we are fussy eaters and we always found something to eat)
Pasta’s, Gyros, huge salad selection, chips, potatoes, fresh meat and fish cooked each day.
Breakfast you can even get fresh omelettes made which I loved or typical breakfast selections, (Greek so doughnuts at breakfast were amazing)
Good choice of wine and beer in the restaurant again the staff were amazing (I wish I got all of their names)

Main bar
Great selection of cocktails, spirits (branded / non branded)
Special thanks to Pano & Anastasia
There is not entertainment every evening out of the 7 there was 3 nights which was nice
Tbh after you’ve had a day in the sun a few drinks and lots of food we was ready for bed by 10pm lol

Pool bar / pool / beach
Again a huge selection of cocktails , coffees , spirits and again lovely staff
The beach is stoney but has lots of sunbeds and is beautiful with the scenery and waves
The pool was huge and lovely and clean

All in all this hotel is 5 star for us and it is was amazing, the best hotel I have ever stayed in and we can’t wait to go back,

Thankyou to all the staff at Giannoulis Cavo who made our holiday an amazing one,
The care and attention did not go unnoticed and you made our first holiday in 3 years one we will never forget 💚💚

We arrived early hours of the morning, the hotel and our room was beautiful and a food platter had been left in our room which was lovely. There was also a small bottle of red wine left with the platter, which at 3am we wasn’t really in the mood for but all drinks in the mini bar fridge, including water/soft drinks were charged for at ridiculous prices (considering it was an all inclusive holiday).
The food in the main buffet area was never hot, and quite similar each day.
The Italian restaurant that you could attend once in a weeks stay as all inclusive quests charged for drinks (again, all inclusive?)
Out of 7 nights, only 2 nights had evening entertainment for maybe 1 hour in the outside lobby area
Full of smokers with no separate smoking/non-smoking areas…we had to move inside so many times due to excessive smoke…myself and my partner are non-smokers and also had our 10 year old with us
Not sure how often the pools are cleaned but didn’t see much cleaning happen and tons of debris in the pool mid week, other resorts we’ve stayed at cleaned pools daily
Positives:
Housekeeping staff brilliant , replenish towels twice per day & room cleaned every day to an excellent standard , so friendly too
Lobby bar staff brilliant
Some (but not all) of restaurant staff good

Would return to Crete, but not this resort unfortunately

We stayed here for 1 week at the beginning of May. The hotel was absolutely spotless and stunning. All the staff we met were absolutely lovely and went out of their way to make our stay the best it could possibly be (Especially Panos, Simon and Bella - Thank you!!)

The hotel is in a great location - you can easily get a bus to nearby towns / cities and walk to a local town down the beach (wear trainers though, the beach is quite rocky!)

I recommend some aqua shoes to go into the sea (due to the rocky beach) but the hotel does sell these at a very reasonable price (€6.50).

The food was beautiful, always fresh and varied at the restaurant and the restaurant staff were brilliant! The drinks come in large measures as well....

One point we didn't realise is that the Italian restaurant isn't completely included in the all inclusive. You have the option to switch one meal per week to the Italian restaurant and then pay for your drinks separately. Saying this, it was well worth the extra (€15 euro per person minimum) and the food was delicious.

Highly recommend this hotel to anyone wishing for a relaxing week!
