Tiffindell Ski Resort is the only ski resort in South Africa. We have natural snow in June, July and August and also make snow in theses months. Ben McDhui peak is the highest 4x4 pass in South Africa at 3001m above sea level. The resort nestles snugly on its slope at 2720m, making you our guest in the highest resort in South Africa! The carefully selected position of the resort, on the south facing slope of the highest mountain in the Cape, ensures that the snow lasts, extending the time available for snow skiing. Slopes cleared and groomed during summer quickly transform to ski runs after even the lightest of snowfalls. Tiffindell alpine and ski resort is open in summer and activities like hiking, fly fishing and mountain biking makes it an ideal summer break away. Don't miss the beautiful alpine flowers in December, January and February.

After about an 8 hour drive from Jhb we arrived in Rhodes village, where we stayed. The next day, after negotiating the steep road from Rhodes we arrived in snowy Tiffindell. Its best to go in a 4 x 4, as road can get difficuly in bad weather. Shuttle service is available from Rhodes village.
Tiffindell resort has very reasonable day rates, as are the prices in the resturant. We had lunch (burgers and chips) which was both tasty and ample.
The kids enjoyed themselves looking around the resort, and playing in the snow, and are now keen to return to try the various activities. Equipment, and suitable clothing is available for hire, and the accomodation looks good. Lessons are available for beginners, so no experience necessary.
Overall impression was great, and we will be booking a return trip, this time staying at the resort.

Thank you Brian, Tiffindell is driven by a passion for skiing, boarding and the alpine environment. We are trying to recreate a small bit of "the Alps" in South Africa. As a well travelled man you appreciate that it is difficult - but we will do it together with your attitude and our loyal supporters. PS We don't believe "the Alps" should have the monopoly and CNN agrees with us - Tiffindell is rated number 19 on "CNN's top 100 ski runs of the world".

After returning to this spot after 15 years, it was wonderful to take my family and experience what I so joyfully did in my early twenties..
One has to keep in mind this is a ski resort in Africa, and your expectations should be just that, then you will thoroughly enjoy..
Some possible improvements to be considered are more frequent child based activities to let the parents enjoy some of the resorts PG activities.
The rooms are superb if you are willing to pay, we stayed in the Extreme Ski lodge which offered a massive 6 bedrooms and 12 beds etc.
We cannot wait to book our next ski adventure with the kids..

Thank you Robin for the lovely review and thanks most of all for coming to Tiffindell. It tends to have a special memorable place inside you even after a 15 year gap. Come back in the summer to see another side of the mountains while the birds and flowers are out. See you next winter season for the skiing - bring lots of friends with you.

We stayed at Tiffindell in early August for three nights. What a fabulous place, everything was perfect! our room in the mountain suites section was cozy and heated when we arrived, the view of the valley and slopes was stunning.
Having been skiing in Europe a couple of times we were blown away by the amenities at Tiffindell especially considering its isolated position, the logistics of stocking a bar and kitchen must be very difficult, but the food was tasty and delicious. The bar with its huge fireplace, amazing view and atmosphere was the place to be in the evenings and because the resort is relatively small we got to meet all the people staying there and had a great social time. There is a Tbar up the main slope and what a pleasure to be able to ski without the crowds, in fact one lunchtime I was the only person on the slope. The staff were all young and went out of their way to make the experience special, doing a cabaret on our last night which was hilarious.
We met the owner early on the morning of our departure and he came over and introduced himself and asked about our stay. His passion for Tiffindell is very evident and I must say it shows!
Dont miss out, this is a very special place if you want to experience the snow at a fraction of the cost and get that true South African spirit that we all love.

Thank you Kate for the time taken to review Tiffindell. It is very nice to have feedback good or bad so we can better all aspects of our operation. We are passionate about skiing and would like to keep Tiffindell available so that many more people like yourselves can ski or snowboard in South Africa.

My family and I went to Tiffindell for a skiing holiday this June. We stayed in Rhodes and planned to drive up to the resort each day to ski. When we arrived on the first day, THERE WAS NO SNOW on the main slope!! Their website said NOTHING about the slope being closed, nor had the staff informed us when enquiring about booking. The staff were EXREMELY unprofessional about it all. My whole family had travelled from all over the country (I travelled for 24 hours on the bus to be there!!), so we were very disappointed to find the resort looking like a ghost town. The beginner slope was open, but it is not worth it. We ended up not skiing at all. Thankfully, we stayed in a lovely cottage in Rhodes and enjoyed taking it easy in the charming little town!
-Roads to Tiffindell are really bad
-Skiing is very poor (maybe for kids it isn't too bad)
-Staff are unwelcoming and unprofessional
-Location is very out of the way
Overall, we really felt scammed by Tiffindell. Don't be misguided by the photos on their website and Facebook page. Huge waste of money!!! I really hope they will get their act together in the future. Would be great to be able to ski in S.A.

If you’re looking for service don’t look here. A friendly bunch of youngsters run this tired resort. Lots of smiles and zero management. Electricity was a continuous problem then no water. Chalets are really tired and if you need anything off you go to look for it yourself. Food was terrible with almost no choice at dinner and breakfast luckily you’ll arrive hungry. For the price the only plus is being able to ski. Sorry this wasn’t up to any standard.

Dear Lance, Thank you for coming to Tiffindell. Thank you for your feedback we do appreciate the forum TripAdvisor provides. We really value your comments and we will certainly address these concerns. The food can always be improved and we pride ourselves on good service on the things we can control. Accommodation from our popular rustic log cabins, can be upgraded to our Luxury chalets. We are revamping the resort every year and have progressed nicely. The money we need to divert to the municipal roads, every year, means it takes a little longer. The conditions were a little severe during your stay as we had high winds, - 9 degrees C, and continuous Eskom power failures. We are in the high altitude zone of South Africa and it took our managers time behind the scenes to ensure serious consequences were avoided. We even had to tie down the helicopter that bravely arrived in such conditions. However, we love to be at Tiffindell in the winter as these conditions bring us the snow. We are focused on providing a unique snow experience for adventurous South Africans (our heroes) who make the journey, by road, from all corners of the country. Sincerely Lew

My family(5 of us) is at tiffendell now and we paid R30 000 for the 4 night package in the leisure chalet. Our chalet is comfortable, there is lots of hot water, all the heaters are working and we have a washing machine and a tumble dryer.
The ski instructors are ok but don't seem to have much patience for the little ones. The food is average and they seem to run out of things quickly. The ski shop is always closed unless you ask someone to open it. The coffee shop looks unkept and dirty. We asked to buy some biltong and the guy helping us said he wouldn't buy it if he were us!!!! Wanted to buy a packet of crisps or a snack of sorts but nothing there!!!! If we knew we would've stocked up on more food before driving up here. The owner of the resort is here as well but hasn't even tried making conversation with us, which I find odd as there are such few people here and as the owed he should at least ask if we enjoying our stay!!!
We could've paid a bit more and rather gone to Europe!!!

The resort is looking tired and shabby, as do some of the staff. Our room was nice and warm, but with plasterboard walls there simply is no privacy. Hot water is in short supply. The whole place is quite badly designed with far too many unneccessary steps - you cannot get from the dining room to bar without going outside, up a flight of steps and down another?
Staff were generally friendly and willing and the food very basic but tasty.

Stayed for 3 nights, must say ski instructors were great- they were fun and enthusiastic, great for kids and beginners BUT the resort is badly run especially the restaurant. Breakfast and dinner are included in the package but they had run out of everything..no gluwein in the bar after day 1, at dinner they ran out of food and dessert every night, at breakfast they ran out of fruit, pancakes, croissants, etc..no butter, only margarine as they ran out.. The kind waitress went and cut some fruit up for us herself.. Rooms ran out of complimentary tea bags and at lunch time on day 3 they ran out of bread for toasted sandwiches!!! This is bad management, it makes for a frustrating and disappointing stay. They seem to have a system of 2 sittings for each meal, but all main meal items and dessert get finished at the first sitting and they have nothing for the next sitting, I saw a sign that asked people to refrain from over indulging at meal times..is this a solution?

When going to Tiffindel, do not expect a European experience. If coming from Johannesburg, expect a long drive with a 45 minute journey up very steep slopes to the resort.

Once at the resort, we found our room very nice with heaters, hot water and plenty of cupboard space. The view from the room was beautiful.

The restaurant provides basic, wholesome food so don't expect fine dining.

We managed to get the equipment we needed but there are queue's so plan ahead.

Whilst snow fell the first day we were there, it wasn't that much and with night temperatures dropping to -10 degrees C, it froze. Naturally, as a beginner, it was virtually impossible to learn to ski on ice, so not much time was spent on ski's.

Overall, the staff were very friendly and attentive and the gluhwein was superb.

Definitely worth a visit.

Thank you for the feedback. The first time up that pass is a unique experience- as is the first time you ski. The next time it will all fall into place. Tiffindell would love to have you back again even just for a gluhwein.

Tiffindell has an authentic ski resort feel to it, which is great.
We were a family of four and stayed in the family chalet. Chalet is small but comfortable and clean. The staff provided fun entertainment in the evenings which was enjoyed by all. I agree with the previous report that the ski hire procedure and lunch need to be improved. It is expensive but if you consider what the logistics to run a resort like this must be I do not think the price is unreasonable.
As a comparison to Afriski? I would say that Afriski has better ski slopes but Tiffindell trumps it in all other departments. I would recommend it to anyone wanting to enjoy a ski experience

It's good to get such great feed back. The price of overseas skiing has rocketed - local resorts provide more than a taste of this exhilarating sport right on your doorstep. We hope the South African public appreciates what goes into keeping these resorts going. With good support we will be able to keep skiing alive in Southern Africa. Please tell everybody and bring your friends to one of the local ski resorts (every season).
