An upscale hotel with style, a wonderful ambience, high standards and always courteous staff. A place to relax and enjoy. Discretion and the well-being of the guest are very important. The hotel, consisting of two houses, has several pools and spa areas which are divided into Family area and Aduld spa. Various restaurants with an exquisite selection of food and wine, as well as the bar areas complete the picture of sophisticated guest care. A table reservation in one of the restaurants is recommended. The wishes of the guests are always the first priority and will be fulfilled immediately as far as feasible. Skiing, ice skating, yoga, fitness, cultural highlights and other activities are part of the daily offer, you are informed daily by SMS/email. The extensive paths through the adjacent nature are ideal for long walks and enchant with breathtaking views, especially in winter. In the design of the spacious rooms, great attention was paid to detail. They are Asian/Indian, some have terrace/balcony, bathroom with toilet and shower/tub, safe, mini fridge with drinks, coffee machine, kettle, TV and telephone. Bathrobes, large sauna towels, yoga mats, slippers are provided in the room upon arrival in spa bags. A library, the bookstore, an interior sale offer and a clothing shop leave nothing to be desired. A place to come back to very much.

We first went to Schloss Elmau in September 23 to take part in their cultural program to see Ludovico Einaudi. We were privileged to see 2 concerts whilst there and loved the intimate atmosphere. What also impressed us were the 7 pools, spas, saunas, relaxation areas, tea rooms and the incredible and exhilarating fresh water stream. This is probably one of the best spa places in Europe! Rooms are beautifully decorated in wood and gorgeous furnishings which carry the hotel's elephant motif and bars are elegant and dreamy. Food was exceptional with so many restaurants to chosoe from and the staff were truly a joy as they really made us feel welcome and part of the hotel family. Last year, the owner also made it a point to welcome us personally! The grounds are magnificent, the valley is stupendous and the scenery beyond magical! So we came back in September 2024 and stayed for a week. Although it snowed on our first morning and rained for a few days, we still made use of the wet areas and just relaxed in our room. After all, we came all the way from Australia just to stay here, so that is saying something. I think we will be back because as soon as we left the peace and serenity, we missed it. So, do put this on your list. You will not be disappointed.

We were here for the second time, again for a week. I find Elmau even more beautiful in summer, although last time everything was wonderfully snow-covered. I have stayed in many 5-star hotels, it has been our hobby for several years. Schloss Elmau is the best hotel of my life. Mr. Müller Elmau, the owner, has put the essence of his life experience into the design of this resort. We had an XL suite of 55 square meters on the west side. I love these bathrooms here and the herringbone parquet, I love the extremely friendly service staff here, the many young people who are hand-picked. We were here for the Christian Gerhaher week. We only heard four concerts because we spend a lot of time in nature, which is beautiful here. Gerhaher is a great, a really great singer, I knew him from the Simon Rattle Bach production with the Berlin Philharmonic. Excellent music. In the evenings we sit in the bar in front of the fire, what makes me happiest are these wonderful young people from all over who are gaining their first professional experience here. It's great fun to talk to them. I got to know Müller Elmau personally. He is a very unpretentious man of quiet excellence. In his own concert hall he sits right at the back and leaves the very good seats to his guests. To put it in a nutshell: this wonderful place - I can say this at the age of 58 and with a lot of travel experience - is perhaps the best hotel in the world, because unobtrusive perfection is the main theme here. On the last evening we went out into the forest at night with a professional hunter during the deer rut, booked into the hotel. Simply brilliant. The problem: where else do you want to go when you've been to Elmau? Everything else pales in comparison. Thanks to Dorian Hartmuth.

Unfortunately, the hotel complex located at the “A” of the world (full of children, children, children of all ages, anywhere and at any time) can by no means meet the demands of guests. Even the reception was completely overwhelmed with regard to our bookings (sometimes also linguistically), with the many young, little experienced, moderately trained people.

The little varied food, served in far too large portions, was, apart from the restaurants Fidelio (very good, but with lousy service!) and IKIGAI (excellent!), rather moderate and so was the completely under-doped service (bars included!) and probably also the cuisine. In addition, the prices for all services (food and drinks) are completely overblown.

In the bathhouse, with wonderful pools but far too few loungers, is cleaned up or cleared a maximum of once a day and as a result bath towels lie everywhere on unused loungers (inside and outside) as well as dirty dishes and glasses on the side tables.

For a "Leading Hotel of the World" you simply have to or can expect much more in the area of "guest care and service"!

To start with the positives, the Michelin star restaurant is extraordinary and the staff there are brilliant. The room was comfortable and as described and the whole family enjoyed the breakfasts. The la salle restaurant was excellent for a buffet arrangement.

However, the rest of the stay was marred by poor communication. We were promised to receive via text the activities program but it never arrived, even after chasing up for two days (the texts were “broken”) and asking daily for a paper print out. On day 4 of our stay I finally found a paper version sitting on the front desk.

We called for water for the room and each time waited over an hour (this is calling every 20 minutes to ask on its progress!) . Every staff member we interacted with at reception said “I’m new I don’t know”. I looked in vain for some sort of conceirge who could help plan our outings but again only found very young and inexperienced staff (eg: “I’ve never been to the Zugspitze, I don’t know anything about it”). Of course there is the excellent sports concierge team but they finish at 4pm every day (and we only found them on day 2!!!). Usually at a hotel of this calibre there is a seasoned staff member available at reception who can smooth things over and help out.

On day four when I expressed my disappointment that we did not know what the activities were and felt we weren't making the most of the facilities, the young staff looked as us blankly and shrugged: no offer to put us in touch with a manager or ask how they could help.

On our final day, we found the badehouse spa. This huge building and amazing adult-only facilities had not been pointed out to us on our tour on our first day and as we did not have a hotel map we did not know it existed.

To echo previous posters here, filtered house water is charged, with tax, at €10 a bottle. Our son has a medical condition and needs to drink a lot of water with his meals. Yes he was eating for free but every meal we would spend €40 on water for the family, being told that it was not possible to get tap water, we had to pay for the Elmau filtered water.

All in all we paid an absolute fortune and experienced a tiny fraction of what was on offer. Really disappointing, especially since we are unlikely to ever be able to afford to travel there as a family again.

We have been here several times and it was very nice this time too. The cultural program, rooms, area, bathhouse and not forgetting the Luce d'oro are all exceptional. Unfortunately, the experience is spoiled by the increasing trend towards family hotels. We have raised six children ourselves. However, when you are on holiday in a 5* hotel with corresponding prices, you don't want to feel like you are in a primary school canteen in the breakfast room and restaurant. This does not match the price level or the standards of the hotel. The service staff also sometimes lack manners and attentiveness. Just one example: instead of the scrambled eggs we ordered, we were served an omelette. When we pointed this out, we received an apology and the question "Is that bad?" in response. Overall, the price/performance ratio is now unsatisfactory. We will therefore look for another hotel in this price segment.

Sunday - Monday yoga and meditation retreat. First the hotel: it is perfect, aesthetically perfect, no matter where you are, it is a treat for the eyes, it rubs off on all the other senses. I had a beautiful room with a fantastic view. The people who work there are young, very different, all polite, nice, accommodating. What initially seemed like a big problem to me - I don't really want to eat several courses in La Salle every evening for €70 - was ultimately uncomplicated. You can get individual dishes in the bar, something Bavarian, in the parlor. You can do anything, you don't have to, you are not pressured into anything, not even drinking alcohol, which is often the case in luxury hotels.
Then the yoga: yoga with Patrick Broome in perfection. Never experienced anything comparable. Kundalini as an introduction, no complicated asanas, yoga powerful, disciplined, mentally strengthening, then Shavasana, ending precisely to the music, a perfect composition. That was really great.
The meditation by Andre Steiner was a bit lacking in comparison. The evening cultural program was also great (two violinists, a mantra concert).

We had booked 3 nights in the castle.
We liked the hotel. The rooms were very clean and well-kept.
However, the service was very poor.
We were neither offered a refreshment at reception nor were we asked on departure if everything was OK.
Breakfast was hardly refilled, for example there were no champagne glasses.
There were no spoons in the bowls of sauces, so the guests reached into all the bowls with used spoons. There were also no tongs for the pastries.
White sausages were served cold.
We would have liked to eat in the Asian restaurant. Unfortunately, this was always fully booked and we were directed to the La Salle restaurant with the comment that you could also eat Thai and Alpine food there.
Unfortunately, this was not the case on site.
We were not satisfied with the food there.
For us, the price/performance ratio was not right.

Our trip to the Schloss did not start out well. We had reservations to stay at the Retreat and the day before we arrived, we found out that we would not have any access the Hideaway for the length of our stay(there was a group that had rented it out) and that we should have been informed of that when we booked. I was not happy as it's advertised as stay at one property and enjoy both. Phillip & Lukas (managers) went out of their way to make the best of the situation by upgrading our room and making dinner & lunch reservations for us off property. Fabienne & Phillipp from the front desk/concierge staff were also very helpful andfriendly. All in all it was a lovely stay and my husband and i agreed that mistakes get made and it's how a company handles the mistakes that really mean something and they owned their mistake and tried their best to make our experience positive.

pros: lovely setting, great spa ("secret sauna by the river!), BMW loaner cars (the most gorgeous cars ever), bike rentals, sun loungers by the river, great bathrobes

cons: the staff is young and although accommodating they could be a little more polished and let things fall through the cracks at times, the breakfast was good but not extensive (although I did appreciate the champagne) the restaurant situation is a little confusing - they advertise that there are three restaurants in the Retreat but it's really just three rooms that all serve the same menu and since we couldn't got to the other resort, that was very limited- I'm guessing it would be better if we could have used both resorts. The dinner were good but expensive in my opinion for what we got and I would say that the food was the lowpoint for us of an otherwise world class resort.

The hotel itself is remarkable, boasting a stunning building and a magical surrounding that catches the moment you arrive. However, service and quality of food (LaSalle restaurant) were not great - not what you would expect from a hotel that claims to be among the top worldwide. Firstly, the breakfast experience was underwhelming. We regularly faced long waiting times, and the waiters seemed challenged to clean the tables properly. Our dining options were severely limited as all but one restaurant were closed for a private company event, which was disappointing given the hotel's and its restaurants’ reputation. Quality in the main restaurant was Ok, nothing special. The room service also failed to impress. Simple tasks like organizing clothes were overlooked, and there was no evening service, which I would expect as standard in a hotel of this caliber.

As someone participating in the early morning yoga retreats, the lack of extra amenities like tea or water was a shame. Last not least, the hotel's text message system for booking tables was not working, causing unnecessary churn.

Overall, the experience felt average and certainly not worth the premium price. Apparently experience was different in the past according to (several) returning guests, yet prices kept increasing while quality kept decreasing according to them.
