DumaTau, meaning ‘roar of the lion,’ is a luxury tented camp located in the private Linyanti Wildlife Reserve on the western boundary of Chobe National Park. The area is famed for large herds of elephants and exceptional game viewing along the Savute Channel. DumaTau consists of ten guest tents (eight twins and two family tents) raised off the ground to take advantage of the dramatic views of Osprey Lagoon. Each canvas-roofed en-suite tent is spacious, and offers unimpeded vistas through ceiling-height glass sliding doors. There is an airy, expansive dining and lounge area and a pool, all overlooking the wildlife-rich lagoon. DumaTau has a very light carbon footprint and runs on 100% solar energy. News: DumaTau will be closed from 1 November 2019, undergoing a rebuild to become a Premier Camp on 1 August 2020. In addition, Little DumaTau is being built alongside it. Until the rebuild begins, it remains a Classic Camp.

From the moment we arrived Duma Tau exceeded our expectations. As we stepped off our small plane we say a helicopter waiting just for us to whisk us to Duma Tau in mere minutes, rather than a 2 hour drive. We soared over the waterways delighting in all the elephants we saw from our Birds Eye view of the marshes. Our South African pilot was amazing and so warm and friendly and helpful.

The staff were all waiting to greet us when we arrived. After our short check in briefing and chat with the chef to check if we had any dietary restrictions, we were able to go to our fabulous room which was actually a tent, though one would hardly know it as it was so luxurious, with an indoor and outdoor shower and a plunge pool. The room even had a cooling unit above the bed as well as a fan, and at night they drew the mosquito netting around the bed, though I did not see a single mosquito while we were there.

Duma Tau, means Roar of the Lion, and we certainly saw our fair share of lions.. However what makes Duma Tau exceptional is that it is located in between two Elephant Crossings on the Linyanti River. So one is able to watch the elephants swim across daily.. which was quite amazing.

We loved boating through the water lilies on the Linyanti River and we saw a huge herd of elephants crossing right beside us from our boat expertly driven by our guide Taps. Taps was also our guide for the game drives and was knowledgeable and fun.
After our morning drive one day, we had a delicious lunch aboard a boat elegantly fitted with a sofa and a dining table and chairs. See photos.

We started each day early tracking the footprints of leopard or lions. We didn’t come across the elusive leopard this time but saw lots of Lions, wild dogs, kudu, giraffes, hippos, lechwe, wildebeest and hunkered of birds.
A magical mystical place… we would love to go back one day!

Dear westcoastcat Thank you for your amazing review. We are glad to see that DumaTau was able to exceed your expectation, and the mokoro experience was one of your highlights. DumaTau is located close to the source of the Savute Channel, with access to the Linyanti Swamps, floodplains, and mopane woodlands, thus offering an excellent combination of habitats. Well known for its elephant concentrations as they congregate along the waterways and lagoons during the dry winter months, the area is also renowned for general wildlife including red lechwe, Burchell's zebra, giraffe, buffalo, and warthog. Predator sightings of lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, and spotted hyaena are good. We hope you got some wonderful photos of all your great sightings and experiences. We too, look forward to seeing you in camp again soon. Bush regards Wilderness

Duma Tau is truly a special place! From start to finish, everything about our stay at Duma Tau was perfect. The camp is beautifully appointed with no detail overlooked. It is situated alongside the river near two known elephant crossings so we saw elephants in camp every day. The dining/lounge area and the individual tents all overlook the river where there is an abundance of elephants and hippos. We enjoyed having cocktails on the floating dock by the fire while watching the elephants swim across the river in the evening. Our individual tent was lovely - well decorated, incredibly spacious with its own separate sitting room, and very comfortable. At night, hot water bottles are put in your bed and netting draped. All of our meals were delicious. Chef Pat and her team prepared amazing dinners particularly when you consider the remote location of the camp. We enjoyed a lovely lunch on the "barge" with Iezy and our guide, Nas. If you are able, schedule an afternoon game drive on the water - we saw elephants sparring, loads of hippos, and bird/eagles. The sunsets are unreal. The game viewing at Duma Tau is top notch. Our guide, Nas, was outstanding in his knowledge and understanding of the bush, putting us on the animals, and a great driver! We saw loads of elephants, hippos, impala, lions, zebra, and were even fortunate to see the wild dogs hunt. Everyone at Duma Tau is warm and friendly. We very much enjoyed getting to know to all of the staff and learning so much about the history and culture of Botswana. We were lucky to be in camp during one of the traditional boma evenings in which present traditional song and dance followed by a dinner of local cuisine. It was a special experience. A special thanks again to our guide Nas, manager Meshak, Martin, Brenda, DK, Mash, and See. This is truly a remarkable and special place that is a must if you are visiting Botswana.

After many trips to southern Africa we have concluded that Little Duma Tau is the very best of over 20 camps we've been at - this is #1.

Faith and staff have done a terrific job in organizing the operation, Adrian the new chef is top notch (food was simply delicious in all respects) and Peter is the ultimate guide especially for bird watchers (his father is author of Birds of Botswana) and his intern See also showing the same level of competence,

The new facility will leave you speechless and in awe of the great work done to high grade Little Duma Tau.

Every aspect of our stay was full tended to and we left with a real feeling that this camp was going to be hard to top or even to imagine how one would do that.

If you are looking for the most memorable experience be sure to include a trip for lunch and game viewing on the water - ask Adrian to simply do his thing and you will be totally impressed.

We can not thank the team enough for a truly remarkable stay - and wish them all the very best.

Rocco, Marcia and family.

This an absolutely beautiful, stunning, luxury safari lodge with many things to keep you busy besides safari viewings. Our room was exceptionally luxurious with the best stocked mini bar I’ve seen, a separate sitting area, plunge pool and nice shaded deck. We had room 1 which is next to one of the elephant crossings so we had viewings and a lot of night activity right by our room. The elephants swimming across the channel were the real stars here, and our most excellent guide Peter always made sure to come and get us and/or get on the water early to see several of these crossings. We saw an exceptionally raw moment when a crocodile attempted to grab a baby elephant that was making the crossing. Peter also delivered so many other wondering sightings including several lion sightings, fighting kudus and even a caracal! Thank you Peter!

At camp we enjoyed an evening of authentic, local song, dance and food, lunch on the barge viewing an elephant, boat sundowners, swimming in the pool watching elephants and drinks on the floating deck. Shane and his team deliver up the most amazing and beautiful food, really restaurant quality in the bush!

Everything at the camp is truly top notch and it’s no wonder it’s making the hot list!

I visited this camp as part of my 65 birthday celebration. Having vacationed in Southern Africa many times over the past 20 years, I think this camp was my favorite of them all time. The elegance of the "camp", enthusiasm of the guide (Peter), quality of the food (Adrian) and the location along the river combined to make Little Duma Tau a magical experience. The sunset cruise to the lagoon provided the best sunset of my life. Peter's lecture about Botswana was insightful even for a seasoned traveler to the area. Thank you Faith, Peter, Adrian and the rest of the Little Duma Tau staff for a wonderful stay.

My wife and I recently spent three nights at this camp. The tents are nothing short of amazing. Beautiful property right on the water. The staff are so accommodating and eager to make sure your experience is phenomenal. Nellie, Shane and Corey were terrific. Our guide was Peter. He is so enthusiastic, knowledgeable and passionate about the flora, fauna and Botswana. His enthusiasm is so contagious! We would highly recommend this property. Great experience!

Although this camp has absolutely stunning facilities, it paled in comparison to the other two Wildernesses camps (Little Vumbura and Mombo) where we stayed. Far and away this was the prettiest camp of the three, but it was severely let down by the level of service. We repeatedly encountered many problems from the wait staff, to our guide all the way on up to the manager that spoiled our stay. Note that the other camps I reviewed received 5 star reviews and take heed.

In addition, travelers should be aware that the wildlife density here is lower than some other camps and the main attraction is seeing elephants swim the river which occurs most frequently in late July - October. This is not a complaint on my part as I was aware of it prior to booking my stay, but the potential guests should take note.

Everything about this camp is exceptional! The rooms and furnishings are gorgeous. Bed comfy, fridge stocked with exactly what you like. Turndown service is lovely. We had incredible animal viewing the nightlight of which certainly was the lions. The food was wonderful! Not that we wanted it but the spa/pool/workout facilities were wonderful. Morning fireside breakfast was amazing. Resident hippo in the front of camp where the cats park. Wonderful knowledge treasures hidden in drawers and art in your room and lobby. And the staff!!!! Incredible. No detail goes unnoticed. Truly exceptional.

The DumaTau Staff helped me for my surprise proposal. They arranged a private cruise on a floating Bar in the river. During Sunset Tom turned the boat to the sun and this was the perfect setting for my proposal. His answer was YES so we will get married. Thank you for this great help.

The suites are amazing, staff so friendly and the location is absolutely amazing. I recommend this camp to everyone!!!!!

Hope we will get back some day!

Dear Coyotetraveler, We look forward to welcoming you into our camp in June. As your visit is in the middle of winter here in the Southern Hemisphere, temperatures do vary from low to high. Our best suggestion is to pack with several layers, mornings can range from cool to cold warming up through the day followed by chilly evenings. Spare blankets, ponchos and hot water bottles are provided for the morning and night game drives. Average temperature for this time of year average around 0 to 20 degrees Celsius (20 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit). This time of year can get cold but it is also the best time to see wild dog as this is their denning season (June and August), additionally this is a good time to possibly view the rare roan and sable antelope. Please let us know if there is anything else we can help you with Kind regards Wilderness Safaris

Answer from Keith V

Dear traveler, firstly you will love Chitabe and Duma Tau. The morning game drives do leave early in the morning. Please keep in mind October is getting pretty warm, so the early mornings and late evening are the best time for the wildlife. Most morning drives are about three to four hours and the evening drives are normally about three hours. However if you ask the camp will organize a letter departure for you in the mornings or evenings. Have fun and travel safe. Best regards Keith.
Answer from Keith V
Gaborone, Botswana
Hi Valerie March is great time of the year the ending of our annual rains, most of the antelope have dropped their young. The predators are out hunting. It is important that you have the correct itinerary. You could include Mombo, Chitabe or Little Vumbura. The temperature will be in the upper 80's. Your best bet is to contact an agent who has travelled with us. regards Keith
