After riding round Georgioupolis we decided that these apartments looked nice, with a pool, and a sunny balcony (It was mid May and quite cold when we arrived). They are situated at the top of the road that leads out of Georgioupolis towards Lake Kournas.
We hadn't booked any rooms so fortunately there was someone in the reception area (Matina) who was lovely and showed us a one bedroom apartment overlooking the pool with a partial sea view, and a studio which overlooked the road with a lovely view of the hills behind the resort. We chose the studio because the balcony was large and sunny, and we liked the view.
The studio was very clean, with plenty of storage in the large wardrobe and numerous drawers; a table and chairs; a dressing table; a sofa/bed settee; and a large bed with bedside drawers. A hairdryer was on the wall by the dressing table and mirror.
The kitchen area was really well equipped, with a kettle, coffee maker and even a toaster. A good range of utensils and even things like a tea towel, washing up sponge and washing up liquid were provided.
The windows and balcony door had roll-down shutters, although the room was not in total darkness due to the glass pattern in the entrance door.
We only booked for three nights, but the room was cleaned and bins emptied every day, with fresh towels provided on the third day even though it was our last night there.
As some reviewers have mentioned, there was some road noise from the main highway a few hundred yards away, but we did not find it intrusive at all, and I would imagine that if your room overlooked the pool you would hardly notice it. Once the doors were closed you couldnt really hear anything in the room.

We spent a very pleasant few hours by the pool which had a grassy area with sunbeds and parasols. In the summer you can buy drinks and snacks, but this was not up and running whilst we were there.

It was about a five minute gentle stroll down to the square, and the same to the beach. On the road down to the square are some decent tavernas, a large cake shop and a good supermarket, so you don't have to go too far away from your apartment for anything.

We couldn't fault this accommodation, and were sad to only have three nights there. We will definitely stay here again next time we are in the area.

Spotlessly clean and brilliant hosts, nothing was too much trouble. A friendly and relaxed hotel ideally placed to discover georgioupolis or further afield either by car or bus. I stayed there recently with my daughter and couldnt have picked a better place for us.

This hotel is a gem in Georgioupoli, such a clean hotel/apartment with friendly welcoming staff. It has a lovely pool area which we virtually had to ourselves, very unusual these days. There is a charge for air conditioning and safe but worth paying. With so much on your doorstep i.e restaurants, bars, supermarket, you don’t need to venture far. I would definitely recommend the Athena Hotel and will be returning.

This is a comfortable small hotel with a clean, small, deep pool out the back. The local town square is only 200m down the road.
The owners are friendly and explained what was required in extra charges.
The room was on the small side and fulfilled the basic needs. Our room opened to a balcony which faced the road. And this is where things went a little wrong for us.
The noise from the road at night meant we couldn't leave the door open. With the door shut it was too hot to sleep.
Air conditioning in the rooms was charged at 6Euro a night. Since the night time temperature on our visit was 26 degress Celsius, and being from Norhtern Europe were unused to the heat, we went with paying for the air conditioning.

Tripadvisor is all about reviewing places you have visited and giving info to help others make a decision, the good the bad and the ugly.
Here at the Athena there is no bad or ugly and I'm not sure i want to tell everyone about the good , i want to keep it to us.
Oh go on then i will tell you.
Its Perfect in our opinion.
Very welcoming Family and staff, they are the perfect hosts .
The whole place is shining, clean and well looked after.
From what we saw all the rooms are very spacious, plenty of storage and all seem to have good sized terrace or balconies with plenty of room to eat or just sit and relax .
Free wifi, Aircon, safes, fridge, hair dryer (on request), tv, kettle, coffee machine, two ring cooker, toaster and all the pots, pans , plates, glasses and cutlery you need.
Indoor table and chairs, outdoor table and chairs.
Outdoors there is the pool and a baby pool, showers, sunbeds and parasols with the mountain back drop one way.
You can purchase breakfast, teas , coffee , soft drinks etc.
Rooms cleaned 6 days a week, regularly changing the bedding and towels.

Location is at the end of town so no crowds walking passed at night but you can be in the centre of town in 10 mins stroll, you can be on the beach in a 10 min stroll.
Supermarket 100 yards away which personally we found to be the best one in town.
As for the bakery which is 100 yards away that was dangerous, we just had to go in every day for something, we can recommend the breakfast, the pastries, the cookies, the biscuits , the cheese pies, the sandwiches, the chocolates, the ice cream, the croissants and the many different breads.
Your first restaurant is less than 100 yards away and the furthest 15 mins away , thats if you go straight there and not via the bakery or any other shops and tavernas on the way.
Athena gave us everything we wanted and we cannot thank the Papadakis family enough for a wonderful holiday, we will be back, dont let anyone have our room.
If you want a taxi to or from the airport then contact Athena, the local taxi they put us in touch were perfect, on time and friendly.

This is our third year at this hotel which is a record for us as we usually go somewhere different every year. It is a family run establishment and is friendly and welcoming and the owners will do everything to make your stay pleasant. Although it is close to the main road we never found the traffic noise a problem and you can always close the windows and turn on the Air Conditioning. There is a small breakfast room that provides excellent fare at reasonable prices and a small swimming pool and separate paddling pool.
It is about 300m from a long sandy beach; 50 metres from the nearest small bar and a very short walk to the town centre.

Booked a studio and 2 bed apt here well in advance after reading the great reviews. Unfortunately our experience was rather different.

Self catering facilities were inadequate. The studio only had 1 dinner plate for 2 people, no kettle and no tin opener. The 2 bed apt also had no tin opener. Both had no toaster or microwave.

The apt was advertised as air conditioned but in reality the air con was only in one bedroom. The layout of the apartment meant that you had to go through one bedroom to get to the other, therefore unless you left the door open the aircon was no benefit. If you opened the windows the road noise from the main Rethymno to Chania road 20m away was very loud.

The room layout also meant lack of privacy, if people in one bedroom wanted to go to the toilet they had to go through the other. The lounge was also always hot.

The apt was dark as it is in the middle of the block, and this was compounded as the light on the cooker hood did not work and one of the bulbs was missing in the bedroom.

The beds were wooden framed, so if you are over 6ft like me, you are cramped in bed and cannot stretch out without having a bar digging into your ankles.

The cleaner did not clean under beds or sofas. All week there was litter under the bed from previous occupants. Sand and crumbs just built up. As the apts do not have any cleaning implements you cannot clean up after yourself easily. There was a whole poo stuck on the toilet brush when we first arrived.

There are many better and cheaper places to stay.

We had a ground floor room at the front of the first block as you enter the (small) complex. The apartment was roomy with a spacious kitchen and a separate bedroom. We had three windows plus a roll down shutter on the doors to the terrace - though it was hot we managed without the air conditioning.

Overall, we really enjoyed our stay - the beach is a 7-minute walk away and there is a good supermarket about 5 minutes away. Seven or eight minutes of casual strolling and you reach the main square. So ideally placed...

The owner is a lovely lady who is always happy to have a chat. When the resort was plunged into darkness due to a power cut (and it was raining heavily!) she met us at almost midnight as we splashed our way back to the apartment with a torch to make sure we got into the apartment without any mishap.

The front apartments are close to the road so there is a bit of traffic noise but it didn't bother us - some local wine and a glass of raki and we slept like babies!

We've been to the resort three times, every time staying in a different apartment; we'd check out the Athena for our next visit. We were very happy.

Just arrived back from Athena Hotel after a 11 night stay. Excellent accomodation. Booked a studio but had a 2 bedroom maisonettes for first few days to accommodate all guests. Moved second week to our studio which was very compact and comfortable. The maisonette had plenty of room for a large family. Excellent cleaner with towels and linen changed every other day! Nice swimming pool. Mother and 2 sons could not do enough for guests. Would return to this hotel and recommend staying here. Walk about 10 minutes to centre of village and another 5 minutes to Kalivaki beach.

We have just returned from our holiday staying at the Athena from 8th to 19th June.
The accommodation was spotlessly clean and well maintained.
We were welcomed by the owner and her Son. Both were very friendly and welcoming.
Rooms are very well furnished and spacious with a nice balcony.
The gardens are well kept and the pool area very clean.
We thought the location was perfect, a 5 minute stroll to the centre and a little longer to the beach.
