We stayed at Olifants River Lodge in March 2022. We stayed in one of the “luxury” rivierview villas, whilst friends of ours stayed in the camping area with their caravan.

The resort is easy to find, although there is about 6km of dirt road (in a very good condition) one has to travel to get to the resort. The resort has a large heated pool inside a building, and 3 or 4 cold water pools. (We didn’t actually see anyone use the cold water pools – everyone was enjoying the heated pool.) There is a shop which stocks all the basics, and a restaurant. We only visited the restaurant one one occasion, and although there were very few people, the service was very very slow, and the waiter struggled to understand our basic order. The food was quite good though.

We stayed in a “luxury” riverside villa. I wouldn’t call it “luxurious” – it seemed quite basic, but there was everything we needed. The villa was clean at first glance, although if you are very fussy, you are bound to find areas which haven’t been cleaned/dusted. The villas also need some basic maintenance – ours had one or two loose tiles, and some light bulbs need to be replaced. I wasn’t mad about the in-bath shower with plastic shower curtain, but it served its purpose and there was always hot water. The beds were very comfortable and we slept like kings.

Our friends stayed in the large camping/caravanning area. There is a huge grass lawn, and all the caravan/camping spots are nicely spread out, so you’re never falling over other campers’ tents. It was very quiet and enjoyable. There is a river which runs in front of the camping spots, so take enough warm clothes/blankets if you are camping. The ablution facilities were in fair order, but could also do with some upgrades.

We saw plenty of carp and catfish being caught, so it’s a good spot for those that enjoy fishing. There were plenty of kids around, but they were never distracting as they were always in the pools or on their bicycles cycling all over the resort.

We look forward to our next visit there, although we’d rather camp then stay in the villas again.

My overall rating of the Olifants River Lodge is average. The 12km gravel road to the Lodge is not a pleasant experience. The overall look and feel of the Lodge is untidy and neglected. The River View Villas are O.K, but could be improved in terms of cleanliness. The lunch that we had at the Gramadoelas Restaurant was a disaster. There was only one waiter, we have waited for 45 minutes for our food, just to receive the wrong food that was of such poor quality. We have sensed that the Lodge have not sufficient personnel to cater for all the guests. We will definitely not visit this Lodge again or recommend it.

We stayed here with a group while camping next to the river. The whole experience was tranquility personified. We had a 15min horse ride (could be longer and further away), we paddled on the river and we swam in the heated undercover pool.

We just returned from a lovely weekend at the lodge. Our villa had two rooms on the first floor, both with en suite bathrooms. At the bottom there was a guest toilet.

The facilities are neat, the gardens are a delight and the new minigolf course a hit with my two small boys.

Our guest toilet leaked and after reporting it, it was immediately fixed!

As one can expect there are signs of wear and tear but everything that should work, worked.

The lodge was not very busy, which was a bonus because it added to the tranquil and exclusive character I experienced.
Lots of space for the youngsters to ride their bicycles.

My three year old son told me this morning first thing, "Dit was so lekker by Olifantsrivier."

What a lovely setting next to the river. However, during a 5 day camping holiday we were greatly disappointed in the maintenance and cleanliness of the ablutions. After emailing management we were assured that the situation will change. Sadly after two days everything was still the same.
Some doors not locking or closing, blocked showers, dirt around taps, etc.

Villas are not maintained, showers don’t work, doors don’t look, Aircon wasn’t working. Tv as well didn’t work.
Very misleading as the activities advertised do not even exist.
Pools very dirty. Kiosk poorly stocked.
A lot needs to be done to improve the place.

We booked a special Christmas family getaway at the Lodge. The place is seriously not worth the money you have to pay. We arrived only to get a Villa that was so dirty that we had to get cleaning supplies to clean it ourselves!! All 3 bathrooms needed a good scrub down as the previous people's dirt was still stuck to the bath. The toilets weren't cleaned, the toilet seats looks like it soaked up so much body fluid that one cant even take a chance to get close to it. Not to mention the dirty bedding one gets. We arrived on the 24th and decided to leave the following morning, Christmas day. We chose to rather spent the day on the road in the car than having to stay a minute longer at that place!! Disgusting!!! Don't waste your money or time on this place.

I stayed here for a night and this place does not have it going on. I called a head to find out about all the facilities and was informed that everything is up and running etc. indoor heated pool - that wasnt even heated. The restaurant has a ala carte menu that looked good but when I went for dinner it was a buffet that was of the worst quality food you can imagine. When i asked the manager on duty if I can order from the Ala carte menu it was refused with no explination - Great service hey.

Im well travelled and actually in the hospitality industry but I will never stay or recommend this place.
