We reserved their sister lodge, Hlosi, which is designed for families. Instead, they “upgraded” us to their “5 star” lodge, Bukela. Unfortunately there is nothing for my 5 year old to do at this lodge. No playground. No “grizzly Cubs” events for kids, as I had discussed at length with them prior. None of these deficiencies were told to us prior to them “upgrading us for free.” We had wonderful game drives, although I had to pay for a private drive twice, which now feels like they suckered me. Between 9am and 4pm I felt trapped with a 5 year old with nothing to do except use some semi-dangerous bow and arrows in an area not fit for archery. It was too cold to swim, which could have been a good diversion. The service staff was also not prepared for feeding kids quickly at meal times. Everything about the meals took forever, so keeping my son patient during meal times took all my energy. This was only a vacation during the game drives. Otherwise I would have rather been at work.

We spent a wonderful four days at Bukela and were so impressed by the staff, the lodge and the game drives. The lodge has had new management since the beginning of the pandemic and one of the first things that we noticed was the happy atmosphere engendered by the people who work there. We heard lots of laughter and the service was exceptional, despite the difficult times we are living through. We were the only guests for part of our visit but nothing was down-specced or pared back in recognition of this. We were in cottage 1 which was the closest to the waterhole so we were constantly thrilled to see elephants and warthogs outside our window. The cottage was large and comfortable and the complementary sherry was delicious! During the morning game drives we enjoyed hot drinks and muffins and in the afternoon we were offered sundowners and warm samosas or Bombay mix. We were welcomed back to the lodge with a different drink every day. Meals were excellent. I wanted to particularly name-check the young chef but I've sadly lost my notes so can't remember his name, but actually, every member of staff was fantastic. On our last morning I woke to discover that my back had extremely painfully locked and Amanda and her staff couldn't have been more helpful as we struggled to pack up, calling a physio for a same-day appointment and subsequently calling to check how I was. The game drives were also excellent. Even though the reserve isn't the largest and we got to recognise the terrain, we saw EVERYTHING. Lions, leopards, rhinos, so many elephants . . . we had no idea the Eastern Cape had such an abundance of wildlife. We celebrated our anniversary while at Butela and were surprised by a champagne tea on the escarpment overlooking the park, which was completely magical. We have been on many safaris in Africa, but Bukela is very special and we will definitely be back.

Had excellent food, great informative game drives. Night drive worth the extra effort. Staff attentive and good service. Saw all the normal game and elephants, Buffalo, rhino with young baby, lions on a kill. Very special were the sightings of cheetah and bron hyaena. Take the time and pay them a visit.
