We stayed in a posh long rectangular tent which was totally sensational. Full facilities including a lovely big double bed, log burning stove, plus an electric blanket on the bed and a comfortable relaxing sofa. A complete porcelain bathroom with running water, a free standing bath with a view, a flushing toilet and a lovely private outside shower. Fully stocked mini bar and full sized fridge, coffee maker and full tea and coffee making facilities. This is not camping for those that like to rough it! The tent’s facilities are all topped off with the cantilever decking and loungers for sunbathing, or just enjoying the fantastic view across the valley. The rooms are spread out across the hillside nestled tastefully in between the vegetation. Each room is accessed via wooden decking which makes you feel like you are really in nature. The hotel has a water hole which is visited by some of the animals and is shown live on a TV at the bar including after dark. There are two small swimming pools and two sundecks, one shaded and the other unshaded. The best thing about our stay was the fact that they had everything organised completely and unlike much of Africa they behave like they do this every day. From checking in, the great food and even the game drive was run like clockwork. You don’t have to go miles to see lots of fantastic wild animals close up. We saw herds of elephant and rhino including both with babies as well as cheetah, lion, hippos, zebra, giraffe, buffaloes, ostriches, warthogs, kudu and lots of other antelopes. My recommendation to better enjoy your safari would be sure to bring a pair of binoculars and as a minimum a compact camera with at least x15 digital zoom lens. Towards the end of each drive there a scenic stop for free drinks and snacks served from a tastefully constructed makeshift bar set up on the bonnet of the vehicle. This is so well done it makes you feel very special. When you arrive you are met at reception and your car is whisked away so no cars are visible to spoil the ambiance. Everything you need to know is explained quickly and efficiently and you are told it is all detailed in the printed information in your room. You should know it is 7.5km drive from the gate off road to the reception and this on an unprepared dirt road which should be negotiated carefully with a hire car. The staff were really friendly and worked hard to make everything perfect. If you have not been on safari yet and it is on your bucket list then consider Bukela Lodge as your first experience and you will not be disappointed.

Absolutely incredible. Faultless! We can not think of a single negative. First the lodge was incredible, comfy beds with heated blanket, log burner for those colder days, freestanding bath, indoor and outdoor shower. Always spotless and clean. Whilst out on a game drive staff would get our room ready for arrival, heated beds turned up, blinds closed, fresh towels. Perfect. The food was honestly the best food we’ve ever eaten. I’m a picky eater and there was always options for me, my husband is abit more experimental with food and he enjoyed trying new dishes. Every day it was a new menu and it was always perfection. Well done to the chefs. There was 6 other groups when we are there and the staff managed to make us all feel so welcome. It started to feel like a family. Everyone would chat at dinner and the couples who wanted privacy was accommodated too. We had ‘lucky’ as our driver and he was amazing! He knew so much information about the animals and he really looked after us. We even got a private honeymoon dinner on our final night. (Private other than 2 elephants that joined us a short distance away at the watering hole!) It is the best place we have ever been and we are planning to return in a couple of years. We miss it so much! Thankyou bukela family, You made our honeymoon extra special. No other holiday could ever compare!

Bukela is in an amazing location for a South Africa experience with plenty of interesting wildlife to see (even in the resort!). The twice daily game drives were amazing and the ranger’s knowledge (particularly Mundai) was second to none with brilliant customer service. Lodges were great but we needed a bit more light in the room sometimes and we had issues with sand in our water. This was because of an elephant (!) digging up pipes and the staff did address this and were always very helpful and friendly. Food could be improved on in the restaurant e.g. at a 5 star resort we didn’t expect to have to pre-order our food for the evening. Felt like meals were pre-made. Breakfast was the best meal and was delicious. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay!

Ranger: Wonga 5* Superb ranger is very knowledgeable, passionate about the animals, and flexible with structuring each drive to suit all. His experience and game drives were the best part of our 3 night stay. Room 3.0* Main issues no hot water each evening as blew fuse every day in No.8 halfway through showering. Variable housekeeping, i.e., turn down service 1 room got bedtime stories the other room didn't. 1 had an electric blanket, and the other didn't. Housekeeping variable. Service 3.0* All staff were friendly. However, for an all-inclusive service , staff were not always visible or available pre-lunch/dinner service to provide coffees or drinks around bar and pool areas. We were not made aware that SA KWV Brandy was chargeable despite the bar server upselling! Our last day fell short of expectation for a 5* resort due to miscommunication, and it tainted our overall experience. Basically, if you leave after 11 am, but Trailfinders don't arrange pick up until 15:30, you are expected to pay as you go for lunch, water, and drinks - but this is not advised upon arrival meeting or by Trailfinders! We have never experienced this in any other All Inclusive location. Usually, it's a "swings & roundabouts" scenario as guests do not arrive and depart at the same time. Food 3.0* Breakfast was good each day. Lunch & Dinner, we had 50% errors/mistakes on our pre-orders (4 pax) on 2 out of 3 days. Our final night we received excellent service and the best food. Public Areas 3.0* Toilets - no hot water or sanitiser. Taps constantly fall off fixtures. Hand soap broken and paper towel dispenser erratic.
As a group of 4 travelling, sadly, we could not recommend Bukela to anyone else.

Hi there, Thanks for sharing your detailed feedback about your recent stay. We appreciate the time you took to highlight both the positives and the areas we fell short. We’re delighted to hear that Wonga’s knowledge, passion and flexibility made your game drives the highlight of your stay. Our guides are a vital part of the Bukela experience and we’re thrilled to hear you enjoyed such memorable safaris. However, we deeply regret that other aspects of your stay did not meet expectations. The issues with hot water, housekeeping and amenities are not reflective of the standards we strive to uphold. We’ve provided additional training to our housekeeping team and implemented systems to ensure that rooms are serviced with the highest attention to detail. In terms of dining, we sincerely apologise for the errors in your orders. To address this, our waitstaff has received additional training to ensure all guest orders are communicated accurately to the kitchen and prepared as requested. We do regret that our staff were not always readily available around the communal areas during, and are reviewing our staffing schedules to ensure a seamless all-inclusive experience is enjoyed. Additionally, we acknowledge the confusion regarding chargeable / all-inclusive items and we’re working to improve communication at check-in and upon booking. We’re confident these changes will improve the experience for future guests. We are sincerely sorry that these shortcomings impacted your overall experience and that Bukela fell short of your expectations as a group traveling together. Your feedback is invaluable in helping us improve and we hope you might consider returning in the future to experience the positive changes we have implemented. Warm regards, Management at Bukela Lodge

We were greeted by Lodge Manager Andrea who made us very welcome. The room originally allocated to us was some way from the main buildings and up a steep incline which would not have suited my wife who suffers from back problems and Andrea managed to swap this for the nearest of the rooms - good service indeed. The room itself was spacious, a little rustic and freestanding bath tub and separate shower. All very comfortable. Meals are served in the main dining area, the food is not bad certainly not gourmet and we would like to have seen more lighter options such as fish. The inclusive wine list is simple and adequate but there were no "excluded wines" worth paying for. Dining room service was excellent. Our ranger, Evence, was quite good and we had some great sightings particularly Cheetah and Rhino. He was not so strong on birds which is a particular interest for us. The Lodge is situated some 7km back from the main road and is a bumpy ride so I would recommend an SUV rather than saloon car. We enjoyed our stay very much and with a few minor improvements it could be a true five star property.

Wonderful few days in Bukela. Thanks to Andrea and the rest of the staff for exceptional service. The housekeeping staff were so unobtrusive we never saw them but our tent was always miraculously tidied whenever we stepped out of it. Zeus was fantastic at meeting our every need and Evans was outstanding as a guide making sure we were both safe and seeing all the wonderful and majestic animals Amakhela has to offer. A must visit for any animal lover.

Staying here and experiencing a luxury safari lodge experience was the reason we booked our trip to SA with a recommendation from Trailfinders. The location is amazing, on the game reserve and we saw monkeys, impala and other local residents from our balcony. There is a mix of thatched suites, thatched roof tents and canvas tents. All have baths with stunning views across the bush, air con units (hot/cold), open fires and electric blankets all which ran on generators during load shedding. I think there are 14 tents/suites so a max number of guests of 28. On our one warm day we got back from our game drive to breakfast on the terrace in the sun, on the colder days it was inside with the fire burning. There is a ranger on duty at night to walk you back to your room for safety. The reserve is relatively small so we saw amazing animals on every drive - even in the storm/rain conditions. Our driver was extremely skilled at driving on the wet, waterlogged tracks and we felt in good hands. On most drives there is a stop for a drink/snack and to stretch legs / see sunset views. Food is a very high quality and most staff amazing. We had a few issues as we'd booked a suite and a luxury tent through Trailfinders but there was mid-communication between the agent, reservations and the hotel. The main problem being the storm that came in while we were there and the substantial difference in noise/ability to sleep under canvas vs a thatched roof! The service during meals was slow - twice we missed dessert at lunch as the drive was departing. Given the drive schedule is set, it amazed me that food wasn't served more quickly knowing that the drives would leave on time. In the evening there was not enough staff to man the bar and serve in the restaurant. Most staff were friendly and polite and working very hard. One disappointing episode was after a particularly cold game drive we were stood defrosting our fingers and toes by the fire and asked to place our breakfast order, only to be told we had to be seated to place an order...but that is just one person. Overall a fantastic experience.

The amount of wildlife seen was amazingly and our ranger Roan was fantastic! Roan was extremely knowledgeable, witty and vested in finding the animals. He remembered what each guest had seen or not seen and drove to those areas of the reserve where that particular animal/animals were more likely to be observed. Excellent.
We did really enjoy Bukela, but I would probably call it more of a 4 star rather than 5 star. The line in this case probably comes down to staff. The staff was certainly friendly enough. However, more staff and more training is needed. Most guests came back from their morning’s drive around 10am, and afternoon’s game drive around 6ish. So at breakfast and dinner all guests would converge in the dining room at roughly the same time. The wait for main course was particularly long. Perhaps a sous chef hire would be in order? Or perhaps telling the guests a range of time for each meal service?
On our last morning we didn’t go on the game drive and went around 8:45 for breakfast. We inquired if we could eat, and the response was “are you checking out today?” In a 5 star place, the answer should have been, “certainly”. It shouldn’t have mattered whether we were checking out or had just skipped the morning game drive. Additionally, A 5 star establishment would have never had you fill out a paper asking if you wanted morning and evening housekeeping service. You would get both unless YOU told them otherwise. Maybe I’m being picky but I had worked in the industry for years and it’s all about managing expectations. The game drives exceeded our expectations so in that respect, choosing Bukela was a real winner!
The place itself was lovely. The area overlooking the waterhole was fabulous with comfy furnishings. This also apples to the main lounge area as well. The bed was comfy in our thatched roof chalet, the chairs and outdoor furniture was not so, but we spent our time in the main lodge area so this didn’t matter to us.
We would absolutely recommend Bukela!

This is a great place for safari. For each night's stay two 3-hr safaris are included (6-9am with morning coffee and 4-7pm, with welcome sundowner) with a knowledgable driver. Seeing wild animals in their natural habitat is a truly outstanding experience. The location is remote and cut off but this is a massive advantage for such an experience. The luxury tent is indeed that, canvas sides but secure and well decorated (in approriate rustic style) and well appointed and equipped. The hotel has a watering hole and the sight of a herd of elephants arriving for a wee dram was breathtaking!

One of the most unfortunate things about doing the garden route is you have such a limited time to cram in so much. We had two days at Bukala Lodge at the end of the trip, and wished we had had longer.
On arrival you get settled in and then head off out on your first Safari in one of the massive overgrown type Land Cruisers. The guide we had was incredible and extremely communicative throughout our two days. Over the two days we managed to do 3x 3 hour safaris, two in the afternoon and one in the morning, and we saw all of the big five. On our last night, we forward a herd of around 20 elephants for quite a distance across the reserve until we reached a waterhole at one of the other lodges. I could never have imagined seeing a sight like this in real life and so close.
On returning to the lodge on an evening, you are extremely pampered with very high quality food and an excellent selection of drinks. Your accommodation is kept immaculate and they seem to refresh it about three times a day with a final turn down while you are out for dinner.
The lodges themselves are quite incredible, perched on Stilts above the watering hole, and If you are brave enough you can open the sliding door while you have a shower and feel like you are outdoors. The rooms themselves are extremely spacious with king-size beds and massive blinds that come down to make it very private on an evening. Each lodge has a balcony that you can sit out on and have a drink in the evening.
On our second day, we sat next to the swimming pool, looking over the watering hole. We both booked an extremely relaxing massage which was an excellent way to conclude a very busy holiday.
We had one small issue while we were there, but it was dealt with extremely well, and in a professional manner by the lodge manageress Silma. (I hope that is spelt correctly.)
I have already recommended this lodge to several friends and family who are considering a holiday to South Africa. When we return return then it will definitely be on our list.
Definitely a five star experience.

Hi there, on your day of arrival your first game drive will be in afternoon drive and then a morning drive (departing at 6 in summer) the following morning.
"Don't be put off by the early morning game drives. It's absolutely worth your 5am wake up call to see the sun rise and wildlife in their natural surroundings, bliss."
"The lodge provides ponchos which helps keep you warm. Be prepared for the cold. The morning run can be cold. We were advised to bring wooley hats and glad we did. "
