We had the most amazing time at Leeuwenbosch country house. If you want shiny impersonal perfection this isn't the place for you. If you want to be treated like royalty (possibly even staying where Prince Harry has stayed before you) but with care and love in a building with history and stories of its own then it is.
The setting, service, comfort and food are fabulous, but it was the game drives that made it. Oubiet the guide was funny, knowledgeable and passionate. We saw everything we could have wanted and more at our own pace. We also had a very successful night drive witnessing the lion and lionesses meeting up for the first time in a few days which was a joy.
The icing on the cake was coffee and muffins with giraffes on our last morning drive, this was topped by the cherry on the icing on the cake as we rounded a corner and found a kitchen and dining table set up under a tree in the bush laid up and waiting for us. What a way to finish our visit.
Our stay was booked through Jessica at African Safaris, she got us a great price and was attentive in contacting us before our stay answering any questions I came up with.

My wife and I found last-minute accommodation at Leeuwenbosch Country House after all their international bookings were cancelled due to the latest COVID wave. After 3 nights at the beautifully appointed Country House, we are leaving reluctantly, but with lovely memories and the intention to return again as soon as we can.

Leeuwenbosch has a naturally warm and hospitable atmosphere, where we felt both special and completely at ease. The Country House has large en-suite rooms that are spotlessly clean and tastefully decorated to convey the unique history and character of the lodge, which incidentally hosted a member of the British Royal Family recently.

My wife and I are both vegan and were treated to a wide variety of delicious and thoughtfully prepared meals.

The game reserve is home to an amazing variety of African wildlife, including the Big Five and our knowledgeable guide gave us a truly enjoyable and memorable experience of the Eastern Cape bush

Overall, Leeuwenbosch Country House is well worth a visit and we can’t wait to come back to this wonderful place again soon.

(Review from November 2018)

This was our first ever safari/trip to South Africa and from the second we arrived at Leeuwenbosch, Namonde made us feel so welcome and at home. We thoroughly enjoyed every minute of our stay!

We were lucky enough to have Mali as our safari guide and he was so knowledgeable and informative, making every drive a huge success, despite the bad weather meaning animals were trickier to find. The only animals we didn't see were hippos and leopards.

We stayed in three rooms during our 4 night stay at the lodge (through choice, not due to any issues) and each one was lovely and comfortable, with unique decor in each. We were based in the Shearers Lodge for one night which, understandably due to the much cheaper price, was more basic however still clean and comfortable. If you can however, I'd recommend staying in the main house.

All of our meals were perfect, and the lack of menu/choice was never a problem for us - if anything it was nice to have the decision taken out of our hands for a change.

The good: Staff/service was great. Loved having some drinks in the little cozy bar after the game drive. Dinner (3 course) and brunch (eggs, bacon etc) were excellent. They set up a table for all the guests which makes for a really social and nice dinner experience. The ranger and game drives were really good and we got to see a wide range of animals including giraffe, rhino, hippo, lion, cheetah, zebra etc. Overall I really enjoyed my stay.

The not so good: Given the price point and booking a “luxury suite” I did not expect mold in the shower, rusty bathroom furniture, paint falling from the ceiling (looked like the roof had been leaking). Another couple had rain leaking through and dripping down on their bed so they had to change rooms. Several stains on armchairs/sofas. The common areas also seemed to have been neglected for decades. There was even a birds nest in the hallway with a bird flying in and out. The house and rooms are nicely decorated but worn. It’s sad because with some work the house/property would be wonderful! The pool water did not look clean at all (cloudy, couldn’t see the bottom).

My husband and I did an overnight stay at Leeuwenbosch Country House recently and we thoroughly enjoyed everything about it! Everything was perfect from the reception to the rooms and the friendly and professional hospitality of the staff, the game drives were magnificent and our guide, Ouboet was amazing and so knowledgeable about the wildlife.
We loved the sightings and the education that came with it.
The rooms are stately yet homely.
The food was incredible and the entire atmosphere felt more like "home" and less like a guesthouse.
We will definitely be back!
Great value for money.

We traveled with our almost 5 year old kids and found Luuwensbosch the most perfect choice and most accommodating towards kids. We felt relaxed and not worried if our kids will be affecting anyone else stay.
Definitely recommendable for Families wanting to see Wild Animals, All the staff and Ranges catered for our needs.
One element we wish to see improved and that is security on the actual country house. Some doors and windows in communal areas don't seem secure. We happened to stay there while the looting started in KZN which put us all into fear and thats when we realized how weak the security is.

If you are after a game lodge in the wild then this is not 100% it. It is a elegant farm house with a nice veranda overlooking a quite busy road with nice farm style food served in cosy dining room. Fantastic game drives morning and late afternoon with knowledgable rangers and lots of wild close up! Friendly staff and personal touches all over! The only problem was we expected the game lodge in the bush viewing animals from your room but it was our mistake as we did not do enough research before. On Amakhala there are many different other accommodation options that might give you more of the bush experience.

From the moment you arrive at Leeuwenbosch you are treated like an honoured guest. Front of house Kerry meets and greets you and shows you round the property. Her hubby Steve also makes sure you have everything you could need. The 1908 home is full of antiques and Fowlds family memorabilia and the dining room is in an 1820s house. Our guide Ouboet had a wealth of knowledge on the fauna, flora and local history having been born there. Altogether a superb experience. Can’t wait to return!

A marvellous family run, original farm site that is right in the reserve. The owners are wonderfully helpful, friendly and provide game drives that surpass expectations. We will certainly try to visit again.

Hi, the Country House experience is inclusive of game drives, yes. Leeuwenbosch Shearer's Lodge does not include game drives, but can be booked at an additional fee starting from R980.
