Detailed Reviews
Medellin, Colombia

So I live in Medellin and travel extensively throughout all of Colombia and this visit/stay in Taganga has been about my 4th in the past 5 years.

This visit in July 2021 was in the middle of my month long, 3,260km exploration of the whole Carribean coastline and so my travel partner and I needed some relaxing beach days which we got from our 4 day stay at La Ballena Azul Hotel.

Basically the horror stories that you read in the other reviews are all legit, this hotel is run down, things don't work, the 2 spas in the center court have no water but plenty of mosquitos, the service is pathetic and I am being generous.

This all being said the LOCATION could not be better as your on the beach, literally the sand is steps away. So best thing that I can say is have zero expectations and if you get a good promotion deal, like I did as the net cost for our hotel room was very reasonable, only then you can "make do".

It actually looks like they are attempting to do some remodeling to the building. I will check it out the next time I am in Taganga.

Now this is interesting, my good friend, my travel buddy from Medellin, and he loved the place, why? He as a true Colombian has little expectation and goes with the flow which is something you must adapt to in order to enjoy the stay.

We spent two nights at La Ballena Azul at the beginning of 2015. The hotel couldn't be closer to the beach so a great location and the hotel staff were friendly and efficient. Our room was clean and cool and the bedding was changed daily. The bed itself was unbelievably comfortable with an awesome mattress for a hotel of this star rating. Our window faced onto the street but there was minimal noise. We were able to leave our luggage at the front desk on the day of our departure and go for a last long beach day. We were also allowed to use the shower and bathroom when we got back. All in all, a really great hotel experience.

BUT stay away from the nearby 'creperie' restaurant. The service was slow and unfriendly and the food was the worst we had in all of our Colombia trip (2 months). To be fair, one of the worst food experiences we've ever had. The juices we ordered tasted of nothing and arrived after our food. The food itself was dire quality. When the waiter asked on my behalf what type of pasta it was, we saw the cook literally put her middle finger up at him. It turned out to be cheap, soggy pasta with tasteless vegetarian 'sauce' which included raw white onions and half cooked spinach and mushroom. The fish my husband ordered was old, dry and foul tasting. In a region known for it's fresh, daily caught fish, we struggled to understand how they dared serve such an abomination. It's only the second time I've ever seen him not be able to finish a meal. The waiter obviously knew the food was appalling quality because he sheepishly placed the food on the table and ran.

We wouldn't hesitate to go back to this hotel but would avoid the 'creperie' like the plague.

The restaurant of this hotel has no personality but the staff are nice and there are big open windows out to the beach. We came for a breakfast and it was no pricier than anywhere else in Taganga. If you fancy some pancakes or cereal with fruit, toast or eggs, give it a try.

My husband and I stayed at La Ballena Azul in November for a few nights. We stayed in a Delux room for about $77/night. This is probably the most expensive hotel in Taganga, which is still more of a backpacker place than a resort town. If you want a real hotel, La Ballena Azul is probably the only real option. The price we paid seems not expensive but it is expensive for Taganga. I understand in the high season the prices go for above $100/night at this hotel, while most other accommodations charge a fraction. But again, if you want a decent hotel, and not a backpacker hostel, that is all you got in Taganga - La Ballena Azul. Plus it is the only place on the beach. I think when they finish the renovation of the hotel, which was still going on when we were there and start cleaning up the beach and the town more regularly, I think this could be a great place to stay!

I think the town has a lot of potential for tourism as it is set in a beautiful bay on the Caribbean coast, but at this point the town still lacks charm. The beach is gray and kind of dirty. You could find a couple of decent local restaurants where you can have good inexpensive meals. The most good looking restaurant is at the hotel La Ballena Azul but it is also the most expensive and not that good and the service is really slow and bad.

The reason we went to Taganga is that we wanted to enjoy Colombia's Caribbean coast and of course visit Tayrona National park, which according to the pictures you see, has beautiful white-sand beaches. I would highlight that it is not that easy to get to those beaches. The public buses leave from Santa Marta (15-20 min away from Taganga) or you can pick up a tour from Taganga that will include a mini-van and a guide to escort you for about $25/person for a day-trip adventure. If you want to see the park, I would recommend staying in the park. Supposedly you can stay at Ecohubs in the park. I would not recommend doing what we did - staying in Taganga and going to the park every day as it takes a lot of time and you pay about about $8-10 park admission fee every time you enter the park.

I would also say that given all the hassles, I am not sure if those beaches in Tayrona were even worth all the hassels. After you go through all the hassles to get there (1 hr by bus/mini-van and 1-1.5 hrs of walking or boat trip) - I am not sure if Tayrona beaches are worth all that. Of course, if you are backpacker and get into the park and chill there in the hammocks for few days for a couple of bucks/night - it is a different story. But we took our precious vacation time to go there, and at the end we were kind of dissapointed. The beaches are fine but hard to get to, small and not all safe for swimming.

If you really want to enjoy the Caribbean beaches, it is definitely not in Colombia (even famous Cartagena's beaches are not so impressive), go to the islands (Aruba, for example) - which is what we ended up doing after our dissapointment in Colombia.

This place is central, but that's where its merits end.
- The pictures of this hotel are extremely generous. It is outdated and looks dumpy.
- Air conditioner only barely worked and the room was still really hot.
- There is loud bumping reggaeton music ALLLL night long, and you need earplugs to sleep.
- The desk staff were very unfriendly and seemed unhappy to see us.
- No hot water.
- Mediocre breakfast.
- Wifi didn't work in the room.
- We heard from people in town that the staff are known to steal things from your room, or tip off other people who will rob you when they know you have valuables.

As a colombian citizen, it's very sad for me to say that the visit to our caribean Cities, like Cartagena, Barranquilla and Santa Marta it was terrible. I can't recommend a dirty city and beach, without any care, from the goberment and their people.
Taganga beach is awful! broken glasses, cat and dog poop and trash all over the beach and streets!
El Rodadero beach, they have a sewerage big problem.
The only good and beautiful place and beaches are the santuary of Natural park of Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and their surroundings beaches and rivers, they are very clean and quiet. Highly Recommended! Oh! I forgot to say that the best way to get there is by boat and if you don't like to feel the high sea waves, then better get the bus.

This hotel looks great when you view the "official" photos, but don't be fooled! The hotel is dated, dirty, overpriced and extremely noisy! We had a ground floor room and were kept up until 2am every night and then woken up at 5am every morning by very loud music. When we complained the staff just said "there's nothing we can do about it".

I'd also like to mention that I've stayed in hostels with nicer bathrooms than this place. For the price you would at least expect this hotel to have hot water!

The only pro is the beautiful beach front location. However, if you value your cash and like a good nights sleep I recommend you look at the hotels in town (just a few mins walk from the beach).

don´t let the website or pictures fool you! this place is probably the most expensive hotel in taganga and it´s not worth the price. I had originally booked a $76 (US) suite which i thought was already high priced for the area but did not know better. they upgraded us to a suite on the next building which had no view and cost us $125!!! the room looks just the same as the other one but cost almost twice as much... bad service and dirty. bottom line; there are plenty of hostals much cheaper & cleaner than this place.

Although the location is brilliant, we had no sleep one night due to horrendous noise from a neighbouring family (not in the hotel). When we complained to the manager all she offered was a discount if we came back! Useless. Not worth the ridiculous price
