Palazzo Guglielmo is just one of the many aristocratic medieval palaces located in the Terra d'Otranto area, all witnessing the economic power of this land during the historical period from the late 17th century to the birth of the Kingdom of Italy. At that time, the ground floor was used for the offices and the warehouses to put the olive oil, the wine and the food coming from the fields. This floor was crowded by the housekeepers, workers and farmers that since early morning worked in the garden or in the lounge. The present breakfast room was originally a horse stable, while the swimming pool area was full of chickens and rabbits. Food was stored inside the wells located on the left of the lounge, while one of the rooms was used as a garage for the only car that was present in the town. Granaries and storerooms were located in the cellar. The rooms where our guests stay, used to be the kitchen and the laundry. Here the housekeepers washed the laundry with hot water and ashes or prepared the cheese using fresh milk. Workers, shepards, men and women were involved in different activities, among which were the maintenance of the palace and of the warehouses. At the beginning the main sources were corn, oil and wine but when the tobacco was introduced, the palace was enlarged in order to include the new product. The new part of the palace included the tobacco warehouse (Via Napoli), where during many years the local women worked. The palace became the economic and social centre of the village and its importance grew during the years, especially after II World War, when the family started to deal with politics and administration. In some special occasions the palace was also used for popular and religious festivals. One of these occasions was the celebration of the festival for the Saint Protector (the Virgin of the Holy Rosary), that takes place in October.

From the time we arrived until the minute we left we felt truly cosseted and looked after at this wonderful hotel. There was nothing that was too much trouble - Cristian and Francesca gave attention to every detail and showed genuine friendliness and interest in helping us with local details and ideas for days out to make our holiday the best it could be. Rooms were huge, well appointed and deliciously cool in the heat of the day. Breakfast was delicious and we also really enjoyed a couple of dinners at the Angelo restaurant too. We will find an excuse to return!

We stayed three days in this hotel. I still can't choose what I like best about it. Was it our spacious room, the many terraces, the enormous orange-filled garden, the tasteful restaurant next-door, the big jacuzzi inside a well-constructed 'cave', the bicycles you can take for interesting rides in the country or the friendly and ever-helpful staff? I can't decide.. why don't you go there and decide for yourself? :))

We loved everything about this place. Friendly and extremely helpful. Beautiful building and garden. Superb breakfast. Great location just 3km from Castro, which is well worth a visit. And the private spa was an extra bonus.

We arrived last minute as a previous hotel we had booked was unsuitable. Met by Francesca who was fabulous, so friendly, helpful and wanted us to have a lovely time. The bedroom was charming (bed not very comfortable) but gorgeous bathroom with a huge tub. The grounds are lovely and the pool is more a dipping pool than for actual swimming. I would definitely recommend it. The food in the restaurant was good and the most outstanding thing was a delicious tomato paste that they make in house and serve with the bread, delicious! So thank you so much.

From the firsat moment on we felt very much at home. Clearly a lot of love and attention go into the place, which can be noticed ! Also the restaurant was much to our liking. Pity we could only stay for 3 days. Hopefully soon again and longer.
