Stunning view across the Overberg with endless access to the beauty of the southern tip of Africa. Decent accommodation and friendly hosts makes this a definite top choice for accommodation. Access to Napier town which is less than 3 kilos away and a whole adventure by itself!
We spent 2 nights at Sunbird lodge in late September. It was a bit cold, but the beds have heat pads and there is also a nice pot belly stove. Wood was provided for free. Stephen and his wife were very welcoming and showed us everything we needed to know about the cottage. They suggested places to go for dinner and even made reservations for us. Stephen took us on two walks, one through his property and another walk on a community plot they are trying to preserve. Both walks were very educational and enjoyable and we saw many interesting plants and some insects. This area near Napier village is nice and it would be better to spend more time rather than just two nights as we did. We visited Cape Alguhas on one of the afternoons we were at sunbird lodge. Many sunbirds and sugar birds near the cottage and some nice Erica and protea flowers on the property near the cottage. The cottage is very spacious, the beds are very comfortable and the bathroom and kitchen are also nice. Everything is very clean. We felt this was very good value for the money given the location, the views and the possibility to explore a bit of the fynbos in the property. Very quiet location since it is above the town. The lodge is to far from the Napier village. We would return to this location and spend a bit more time.…
We visited Sunbird Lodge from 23 December to 26 December 2014. Was a pleasant stay. Beautiful scenery in tranquil environment. Owners are passionate about hospitality and environment which make out to be a excellent combination. Highly recommend able.
The farm is on Napier mountain and when you arrive, you think you have reached the top (although you have not)! There are stunning views over the Aghullas plain and peace and tranquility. It is part of a fynbos conservancy and the owner, Stephen is chairman of the conservancy and also the local Botanical Society. He and his wife have transformed the property from a forest of invasive aliens to a thriving fynbos mountainside - and are still busy with the endeavour. Stephen is very knowledgable about fynbos and will happily take you for a walk and help you learn, whatever your level of knowledge about fynbos. We stayed in Erica (see tip for good room) which is a cosy free-standing thatched cottage with a kitchenette/living area combined, double bedroom and bathroom (with a huge shower). The bedroom has a fireplace which was very welcome as the nights we stayed were very cold. Plenty of warm bedding and electric blanket to keep you cosy while you sleep. It is fully kitted for self-catering - a fabulous braai outside, inside a 2-plate gas hob, microwave, fridge, toaster, kettle & sink. If you don't feel like cooking there are a several restaurants in Napier, just 2.4 km down the hill. Tea, coffee & milk provided and an honesty bar. No TV, but there is mobile phone and also free wifi access if you are addicted. There are bee hives on the farm and you can buy delicious fynbos honey - unpasterised & unfiltered. Activities - birdwatching (on the farm or in surrounding Overberg area) walking, chilling. There is also wildlife to be seen if you keep your eyes open - we saw Angulate tortoise, Cape hare, Grysbok and a variety of lizards and birds on the farm. A good base for exploring this part of the Overberg with Aghullas, Arniston, Stanford, Caledon all in easy reach. If you need to be in the Napier / Bredasdorp area and need a base, this is a good choice. And great if you just want to get away.…
The chalet was well-equipped and beautiful inside, with amazing views outside. It had a lovely braai area on the deck, as well as a coal stove in the bedroom for a cosy winter getaway. We were even welcomed with rusks in the kitchen, which was lovely with a cup of coffee/tea after the drive. The hosts are keen conservationists, so it was good to learn about the area and its natural vegetation, as well as what people in the area are doing to conserve and preserve its natural beauty. The hosts are very welcoming and relaxed. When I was stressing about who knows what (the way I normally do), in a very kind way our host simply replied, "Just chill." This pretty much describes our entire stay. We will be going again.
