Hotel Malica fitted well into our general perception of San Leonardo. Maybe the place would be livelier in August - in the Italian holidays, but when we visited in mid July everything seemed dead, almost abandonned. The air in the city was definitely cooler than the baking Sardinian heat in the low lands, but the atmosphere seemed moist, clammy and dim. Arriving, the woman who turned out to be our host met us out front of the hotel coming from a side door. No other people was around and the doors looked closed, so we slowly walked around looking in, until she made a gesture as to what door to use. Inside she found her way behind the counter and said nothing. Maybe she was unsure if we understood any italian, but it felt awkward that she made no attempt to lead the conversation. After checkin she kindly allowed us to park our bicycles inside in an unused dining room. Our room was simple and sparse. Not so much a problem. The shower was without curtain and the hose was leaky, so everything became wet after the shortest bath. The breakfast was that ususal italian, small, pre-toasted bread with cherry jam. Period. Maybe we could have asked for more - but coming from B&Bs that had much more set out, we expected better from a hotel. The hotel was uninhabitated save us and an elderly italian couple, the corridors were dim and the furniture dark, which added to that whole sleepy ghost town feeling we got everywhere in the city. In the evening the hotel's TV room gathered around 5 to 10 elderly people watching TV. On the plus side it was quiet and the cool mountain air made air conditioning superfluous (fortunately, since there were no air conditioner).

We were on a day trip to San Leonardo de Siete Fuentes (San Leonardo of the Seven Springs) as a refreshing alternative to our beach daily immersion. The food is what you would expect to find at home in Italy: the menu is simple with few choices but everything was tasty and well cooked. You can find a selection of Sardinian and Italian food. Salad is fresh, meat good, pasta delicious. The restaurant is very well located for further exploration of the little village. Place is clean if a little basic, toilets spotless (and they say that you can judge a restaurant by it....), and the owner was kind. The price was honest.
