The hotel itself is actually quite good, but the reason for my low rating is because our group was barred by the hotel from having breakfast despite it being included in the room rate. No explanation was given, but it transpired there had been a problem with a previous group.

Stayed here for one night while up to see the Stellar eagles from a drift ice breaker. The rooms were fine - dinner fine - nothing special one way or the other. Rausu is off the beaten path so fine == very good in this context. Wasn't sure what to expect out this way - we

Nice bright reception area to sit around in .. though very draughty when doors open. Had washing and drying machines as well as a little shop. Rooms were comfortable with en-suite facilities. Heating very effective and a tad too warm. Although staff spoke little English we

Located a 5 minutes drive from the harbour and close to the national park visitor centre, this is a good, clean traditional hotel / ryokan with private facilities and good onsen. Very tasty Japanese dinner and breakfast, with friendly staff who we managed to communicate with

It’s a good 30 min Walt to the harbour. Rausu has ONE taxi so you need to book it ASAP when you arrive. The accommodation does not provide transport. Don’t know about whale watching.

Please tell me if you have non-smoking rooms and if rooms have private bathroom? Thanks

This isn't this hotel''s websitR but we stayed here and yes we had a non-smoking room. Smoking is rarely seen in Japan anyway so you will almost certainly get a smoke-free room. Hope this reassures you. Mike

"From what we could see all rooms were of an equivalent standard."
"They'll all be good."
"I suspect all the rooms were similar"
"Room 221 right off the elevator."
"Rausu is a quaint little town near Shiretoko National Park. Most would stay in Utoro on the other side of Shiretoko Pass when visiting Shiretoko. If you like to explore more than Shiretoko i.e. a fishing town with many surprises installed, then stay in Rausu instead of Utoro. This is the go-to hotel for Rausu. Utoro feels a little more sleepy than my liking, and less options for food are available, although there is always an abundance of convenient stores in all these Hokkaido towns!"
