The Lido Hotel in Johannesburg is a classic Art Deco Style Hotel that dates back as far as 1932. The design of the hotel was inspired by the Queens visit to South Africa by steam boat. The name Lido means “deck of a ship” used as a public place of recreation. The hotel is well placed in Kliprivier conservancy and Khoisan land. The Lido boasts 24 rooms, each an en suite with diva baths and Indian rock tiled bathrooms walls. The Lido Hotel can host up from 50-400 guests for weddings or special functions in our Main Hall or Lapa The Lido Hotel was the original trading post, and is still a popular stopover for people traveling between the North, East and South Experience gracious hospitality with a breakfast, Halaal Restaurant and Coffee Shop and a braai at the pool. We cannot speak for all hotels in Johannesburg in saying this beautiful, historical building has its rich heritage protected as one of our national treasures.

Decided to try the newly available breakfast at Lido . Setting was lovely , formal . Wide range of breakfast options . Illy coffee was delicious. Only one lady to make the breakfast though, so we waited a while even though we were the only ones . We ordered a breakfast with hash brown and mushrooms . We received chips instead and you could count the mushrooms . Would have appreciated being told that hash browns were out of stock . Not a fan of chips for breakfast

Tucked behind a petrol station, there is not much "kerbside appeal" for this hotel. The Reception staff are quite unhelpful. When I asked if I could borrow a hairdryer, two ladies told me that they did not have any hairdryers. Luckily another lady (manager?) overheard me in the foyer and came across immediately to say that of course they had lots of hairdryers I could borrow and arranged for one to be brought to the room. The room is very basic. The glass basin was badly stained with calc and leaked onto the floor. Water pressure was poor and the shower head placed too high above the bath, making it a long process to get washed. Towels are quite thin and you get no hand towel. There is a lot of noise from the road and the radiator in the room did not work. They did provide a plug-in blower heater but I do not like the draught. I have to say that we were staying for a function of 250 people and within half an hour they had run out of red wine and 15 minutes later, white wine. The poor organiser was tearing her hair out. 2 hours later we were told that new supplies were available. Who runs a hotel with a huge function room where they run out of booze in the first hour?

With regards to the rooms, it was extremely dirty, I had difficulties with the air conditioning and the Television. The air conditioning didn't cool the room and the TV was basic and had bad signals throughout all channels. Requested a iron and ironing board and the reception said it can only be available at 8 when housekeeping returns the next day. We requested for water as the water wasn't fillitered, they couldn't provide that

due to water sortage. Overall it was a bad experience and I wouldn't advice any one to visit this hotel.

I lived near Eikenhof throughout my teens and early adulthood. In those days decent girls did not go to the Lido! A few years later, my sister held her wedding reception there and it was quite nice. Took a trip to Eikenhof with my aunts (who grew up near Tedderfield) and it seemed the Lido was the only place to go for breakfast. What a find! The food was fresh and tasty and the coffee was the best I've had in a long time. The hotel has been restored beautifully although the (original) wooden floor in the ballroom can do with some TLC. (Pity the terrace no longer extends to the river, which is now overgrown and fenced off for security reasons)

Be aware that this hotel is available as a party/disco venue allowing the visitors no sleep and management ignoring the complaint. Would not recommend this as the rooms are dirty, staff unhelpful and a very unsecured location!!

From the moment you step foot into the tired look reception down the hallway with the filthy carpets i have been afraid of how the room looks like. The room has been ok ! The glass basin is very dirty and don't even start with the bath / Shower . I had to wash my bath before i could have a shower. Still body hair from the people before me. The towel looked like an old rag witch i could have washed my car with . disgusting.

Our karate group stayed at the Lido recently and while there were a few small niggles our stay overall was a good experience. As Team Manager I dealt with Louise who went out of her way to assist us. She went over and above the call of duty, even coming in on her day off. My team really enjoyed themselves in the pool and all say the food was excellent. I would definitely recommend a stay at this venue.

I really have no idea how this hotel has a 3* rating. Had a family function and collectively spent over 40k on accommodation. It was of sub standard quality, the sheets and beddings had blood stains and brown marks on it, seems like it hasn’t been changed from the previous guests. The rooms was so musty and dirty. We had my sister in one of the standard rooms which had no aircon, felt like a sauna. She requested a mobile aircon, which leaked and flooded the room, complained to management, they were so abrupt and rude..more arrogant then anything else. Owners are so abusive, rude and arrogant. My sister packed her stuff and left, they refused to refund her monies paid. Paid for the entire accommodation in advance, the room was occupied a day later by new guests.... unethical business practice... refusing a refund and rebooking the same room again. The food was absolutely horrible... stay away from this hotel. Customer service is non existent, they have no clue what they doing. Absolutely disgusted

After hearing about The Lido, and being in the area we decided to check out this Art Deco venue and maybe have coffee (as there is no alcohol available/permitted on the premises).

It was particularly quiet, we took a walk around taking in the ballroom, side venues and the pool. We decided on a milk-shake in the bar.

The friendly staff took our orders, for a chocolate and banana shake. The flavor & taste of the milkshakes were great. A nice touch was the 3 marshmallows in each. (pity that the 3 in the one were SO hard that you could not bite into it, the other 3 were marginally better). They mixed the shakes at the counter and the machine was very loud;resulting in us not being able to carry on our conversation.

That said, the presentation was great and flavored strong enough, it reminded me of my childhood shakes.

Kudos to the friendly and smiling staff, that served us, that is always a bonus.

The Lido Hotel doesn't look like much from the outside and it's location, behind a petrol station, doesn't help with that impression.
Even when you get inside, the decoration and general feel of the main reception area is somewhat "tired".
However, the rooms have recently been renovated and are to a very high standard.
The hotel is outside of Johannesburg and in beautiful countryside.
If you are planning a private stay you will need your own transport.
I stayed for business with a company in the local area and was very pleased with the facilities and the helpfulness of the staff.
