We stayed one night with friends at Matfen Hall. The bedrooms were delightful with wonderful views of the beautiful Northumbrian countryside. We ate in the library restaurant and had a superb meal. The staff were friendly and very helpful. I would definitely recommend!

Ideal as a relaxing short break. We enjoyed it very much and wish we could stay another night. The facilities are excellent as is the setting, service and especially the food. The Northumbrian Breakfast was a first for me and very good without being overwhelming. It's also

Once finally found, (our satnav wanted to take us on a most obscure route!) this hotel is a delight. The slightly faded grandeur of an old country house added to its appeal for a relaxing few days away. From check-in through to leaving found all staff most helpful and

Having been booked into this hotel along with about 20+ colleagues for a couple of nights, I tried to ring ahead to book a spa treatment on several occasions without success. Was assured that someone would call me back & left messages on other occasions. Having checked in - nice

Dear tilly04, Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts on your recent visit to Matfen Hall. I’m disappointed to read that you did not think your Afternoon Tea portion size was adequate and that you found our lounge seating too low for your comfort. We do serve Afternoon Tea in three areas of the hotel; The Conservatory, The Library and The Drawing Room. I suspect, given your comments relating to the seating, that you were accommodated in the Drawing Room. Had the team been made aware that you were not as comfortable as you could have been, they would happily have moved you to another area with relative ease and minimal fuss. We are regularly asked to provide boxes so that our guests can take some of their Afternoon Tea selection home with them that they have felt unable to consume in one sitting. I am therefore quite surprised to read your comments suggesting that you do not feel the portion size is anything but generous. I acknowledge that a ‘slap up meal’ could have been purchased for a similar price in a very different style of establishment. We do like to think that our setting, property, team and produce set us very much apart from the budget end of the market. Thank you so much for your, very kind, positive comments regarding your experience overall. I do hope that you’ll choose to join us again in the future, perhaps in the Conservatory or Library. Kind regards, Peter J Dawson Hotel Manager Matfen Hall Hotel, Golf & Spa

I stayed in Slayley a few years back and in Matfen just last week, but based on that I would prefer Matfen - so if the prices are comparable go for Matfen.
