For years we have been calling in on our way North to Bilbao Ferry Port, or Santander. Altube is handy and well placed for journeying on and we have praised it not just for ease of access but value for money and a decent Restaurant and Bar. Over the years standards have wobbled, the restaurant has varied and refurbishment of the Ground Floor promised much. Now, however nadir has been reached. The Restaurant may still have its signage but Restaurant it no longer is. Food is displayed in a long "Buffet" type heated cabinet with prices ranging from not very much (were it a humble Cafe) to ridiculous. There is no Menu to peruse, no descriptions for the offerings and just some staff behind the counter to fetch out what the customer has indicated - for that customer then to carry their plates and find a table. The Bar has expanded and now people can perch on elevated chairs at a bar top along the "Restaurant" side overlooking and eying up the diners. This Restaurant had become Gastronomique ! No longer alas. The Rooms are still large with enSuite but are becoming tired with deteriorating floor tiles, and ash trays in the "No Smoking" rooms ? The Room Door Numbers do not coincide with the obligaratory Fire Exit plans on display in the rooms ! As for prices: We booked directly by telephone and had a "Special Offer" which turned out to be twice what we could have had booking on line. So still convenient but no longer value for money or a decent Restaurant.

Travelling from Southern Spain to the ferry ports in Bilbao or Santander for an early morning crossing can be difficult. No one wants to travel far from the main roads, but a comfortable hotel bed is a must. Also good food and a place to relax. Well this hotel does it in spades. Great place to stay, friendly staff, good food and right on the main road, yet quiet. Highly recommended.

Altube is still value for money, is conveniently placed for a stop-off heading North to the Ferry Ports, has a Bar and Restaurant and as ever is clean with large rooms and modern en-suites. And yet...and yet...standards previously high are somewhat reduced. The staff are even less communicative, the Breakfast minimal and the Restaurant now barely acceptable. Such a pity as it has been a pleasant enough Way-Station, the buildings only fairly recently successfully renovated and refurbished. Now perhaps AS Hoteles needs to sort out the personnel. We stayed Monday 18th September.

AS is a chain based on the Motorways in Spain. Altube sets a standard that many Hotels, let alone Motels, in the UK should hope to emulate. There is ample parking which is more than can be said of many establishments, an adequate Bar and a rather good Restaurant. The Bedrooms are basic but large and clean with full-width windows whilst all the rooms have modern en-suites. The Bedrooms are up a floor and there are no lifts but I believe there is room available on the ground floor. Yes there is a Service Station - usefull before heading to the Coast and beyond, and yes Lorries do park in their alloted area a little apart from the Hotel. Though accessed from, and serving the Motorway, Altube is in its own secluded site a little to one side. A room away from the front of the Premises could be requested if bothered by the prospect.of the Vehicle Park For a convenient stop off on the way to Bilbao or Santander with the opportunity for a decent meal Altube is ideal and very reasonably priced. Altube (Nord) is only accessed with any ease from the Motorway heading North. A similar establishment with a Restaurant but with no Hotel accomodation (Altube Sud), I suggest should ony be attempted from the Motorway if heading South. We stayed, on our way to the Ferry on Monday 19 September.

This hotel is basically a service station on the motorway and does attract a lot of lorries and coaches. At least 3 coaches pulled in as we were checking in! Due to its access off the motorway, this hotel is only really suitable if travelling north. The accommodation is pretty basic. Best feature was the bathroom, which had a nice shower with excellent pressure which was welcomed after a drive from the costas. We requested a non-smoking room but not sure if any rooms are non smoking only. The room did have a very heavy cigarette smell about it, which was quite off-putting. The food and beverage is pretty average. The restaurant was closed from 16.00 till 20.00, although you can still get snacks and drinks. We arrived at 16.30 and were quite hungry...but there is no where else to eat so we ended up waiting around, not ideal. There is ample parking in front of the hotel. All but one of the rooms are on the first floor and there is no lift.
