We always stay in the farmhouse close to the bush camp. 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, quite rustic but comfortable amenities! Lovely outside area to braai and sit around the fire. It’s a treat to escape up here once in a while, sit and relax on the large patio and read a book or chill with friends. I would highly recommend this little gem! When the weather is really hot, Alois will fill up the “jacuzzi” for you with crisp and clean mountain water. Take a game drive at sunset or sit and watch the vultures coming home to roost. My happy place👍🏻

Hey Holly A great description thanks, I couldn't have put it any better myself as rustic as the farm house can be we have put in quite a few repairs and are working on a few more, looking up at the Griffons while in our "sun-warmed jacuzzi" is a real treat as well as sundowners on a game drive It is great to hear you enjoyed your stay we hope to see you again soon, and thanks for the feedback. Warm Regards Benjamin

It was an absolute pleasure to stay at this rustic but well equipped camp with the family.
We had the whole area to ourselves and were looked after brilliantly by Alois and family.
Griffons is peaceful, beautiful and pleasing to a wary soul.
The splash pool is a delight in the heat and outdoor showers brings you close to nature.
We saw numerous game on the farm and adjacent Marakele Reserve
It was time well spent and we will surely visit again.

Not even the persistent August wind could dampen the atmosphere of tranquility, peace and quiet. All amenities are there, and it was great to get away from it all with little cell signal. Rooms are spacious and outdoor shower awesome. Manager on site takes care of all your needs. If it’s value for money and comfort you want, Griffons is unbeatable. If you expect Sabi Sabi luxury, it’s not going to happen. Game viewing we believe is good but the weather was against us and we were all too happy to hang around camp, cook, braai and connect for a change. Scenery unbeatable! Access road may prove a bit challenging in some places for the nervous or paranoid, but taking it slow and relaxed, any normal sedan can make it up the winding mountain pass. All agreed it’s a trip to be repeated…next time just a few days longer.

Perfect remote escape surrounded by the bush. Great host in Alois and all that you need for a time to switch off.
The rooms are basic but ticks all the boxes. Communal kitchen and boma provides areas to sit around and admire the 360degree views.
Benefit is the fact that it is in Marakele, so big five area.

This was a real find - a peaceful, welcoming bush camp, rustic but very comfortable and very thoughtfully provisioned. Griffons Bush Camp, a short drive from the Marakele National Park, offers accommodation in separate stone-built cottages each with adjoining outdoor shower, toilet and washbasin, with plenty of gas-heated hot water. A separate and adjacent building has full kitchen facilities including a large indoor dining table as well as tables on the patio outside. The kitchen is very well provided with gas fridge, freezer and stove, and cutlery, crockery, pots and pans, as well as plentiful torches and lanterns - no mains electricity though phone charging etc can be done for you by the camp manager. Lots of braai facilities and a campfire set up ready for sitting round.

We were at the camp in mid winter, and had the place to ourselves. Although it was very cold after sundown, we could have put a match to the outdoor fire, but chose just to wrap up well to enjoy the gathering darkness and the sounds of the bush, as well as the emerging starscape. There was a gas heater in the bedroom and lots of extra blankets, so we were plenty warm enough overnight.

Thoma the camp manager was great - very welcoming and helpful, made sure we were well briefed, had enough light and heat, knew where everything was. We arranged a game walk for the following morning, and he indicated that he was likely to be accompanied by the camp's resident meerkat, Foxy. He wasn't wrong. Foxy was an undoubted asset on our walk and a perfect accompaniment to Thoma's bush and tracking knowledge, instinctively alerting us to the black eagles so far overhead that we would likely have missed them. Well done Foxy! And we didn't need to see much in the way of game, as we really appreciated and learned heaps from Thoma's attention to the little details of the bush flora as well as fauna, and his knowledge of the nearby cape vulture colony and the numerous bird species around us. Foxy provided company and entertainment, working ceaselessly to track down and dig out juicy crickets and larvae hidden underground. Thank you to Thoma for an awesome bush experience and to Foxy, who stayed around the camp to enhance 'guest relations' for the rest of the afternoon.
We will definitely be back. Griffons Bush Camp ticks all our boxes.

The time at griffons Bush camp was just great. We were staying there for two nights at the beginning of our south african honeymoon greater krueger wildlife experience. In the beginning when we arrived there was this little, very cute, mongoose called Foxy that gave a warm welcome to us. Robert and Thelma, the owner of the camp, invited us for a very nice trip to the near marakele national park. During our stay the service was very good, Robert and Thelma were very kind and nice to us. They are doing some great animal documentaries, too- watch out for wild dog productions- great stuff! All in all it was a very nice experience and we really can recommend this camp to everybody who likes to be out in nature and is looking forward for some surprises (the camp is open to marakele nationalpark without any fences in between)! We were so surprised when we got to this little gem . Chalet had 3 beds in outside shower and toilet . a Bit chilly for this time of year but totally exhilarating !
Sit on the throne and watch vultures leave their nests ( with Bino) . We loved the place .... saw kudu and wildebeest close to camp . Basic freezer and kitchen was all we needed . Fire wood was supplied ... more than enough !! The camp manager was so helpful ..... we'll have to go back .

It's not often you come across a place, particularly a week-end get-away, where you just don't want to leave...

It's natural beauty, the distant cliffs filled with the Griffon vultures' nests, the sunset, sunrise, the passing Kudu, Vervet Monkeys, Impala, Zebras and Wildebeest.... with only the birds singing around you while you savour your morning cup of freshly brewed coffee taking it all in.... is when you realise: "wow, all this and just a few hours drive from Johannesburg??!!"

The accomodation is basic and rustic, and could use a bit more of a female touch, as my wife put it... but if you were hoping for five star accomodation in the bush, this is not it. If you were hoping for five star natural bush environment, with total peace and quiet... this is definitely it!! Whether it be for family, kids of all ages, friends...lovers... anyone who loves the bush.

You will love it! ....even taking a simple shower... is an experience at Griffons!

Your hosts, Thoma, Eloise, and Foxy ..... are by far the most welcoming, un-imposing, un-obtrusive, yet friendly and helpful hosts we have ever come across. ..oh, and I almost forgot, INCREDIBLY knowledgeable on the environment and the area.

We will definitely be back!

An Etios Cross, should be me more than high enough. We always recommend a high clearance vehicle ( you dont need a 4x4 just a vehicle that does not have low suspension)
