We had a two night stay over Christmas. We prefer to get away from Christmas commercialism but found the atmosphere a little commercial. The property has been expanded over several years and is quite large and sprawling now and has it own wedding chapel.

We had a friendly greeting and were shown to our room - number 16 in one of the cottages with thatched roofs.

The room itself was a very good size with a large bathroom with corner bath and separate shower. The room was comfortable with very efficient air conditioning and a nice balcony with views over woodland. The only real criticism of the room is that there was insufficient lighting and at night it dark - nothing a few spotlights on the beams would not put right.

We dined once in the bistro and once in Eaves, the fine dining restaurant. The bistro was crowded on our first night (Christmas eve), the food was simple but not special and we liked the wine list which had some unusual and interesting offerings. We had been advised to book dinners but on our second evening in Eaves we were the only diners and we actually felt a little sorry for the waitress who had to traipse up and down the stairs just for us. The new menu is quite adventurous but perhaps trying to be a little too clever. The wine list was the same as the bistro.

Breakfast was quite busy both days and there is a good enough choice to suit all tastes.

Granny Mouse is in a nice location for the Midlands Meander, obviously popular with Durban city people, and we enjoyed our stay.

Granny Mouse was the sixth of our seven accommodation during our 21 night tour of Kwa Zulu Natal and its was our favourite.
A Great Boutique Hotel well run by Sean and his team who were all very friendly and couldn’t do enough for you. From the security guard on the gate to the to the gardeners and guys who washed your car the whole team of staff made us feel most welcome.
I have said before a picture is worth a 1000 words so my photos can do a lot of the talking.
A great room with some amusing visitors on the balcony, clean well maintained and with those nice touches of an umbrella for when it rains and getting back to the main building. We used the laundry service and handed it in during the evening and jokingly said it say by 8am and it was back in our room when we got back from breakfast the following morning, what superb service
Whilst were staying the fine dining restaurant was being refurbished which we knew about in advance so no problem as the menu was being offered in the conservatory / bistro. The fine dining menus suited us better and we chose from that on each of the 3 evenings we were there. Food is freshly prepared and well presented.
Granny Mouse is in a superb location for touring the Midland Meander.
We can’t rate Granny Mouse highly enough and if we are ever in that area again we will certainly return

My wife and I recently celebrated our 10 Year Wedding Anniversary at this beautiful hotel.

We could have not wished for a more memorable 4 day stay.

From the outset let us just say that all Covid-19 regulations were followed verbatim, and we felt completely safe in all parts of the hotel and its immaculate grounds.

The staff are commendable, nothing is too much trouble for them, and they went out of their way to make sure that all our requests, were met with a smile and dealt with swiftly.

We opted for the Wine and Macaroon as well as the Wine and savory pairings - these we shall never forget, what a delight especially when hosted by such a great and enthusiastic sommelier/s !

The food is glorious, the Spa Treatments were truly top of the range, and the tranquil atmosphere of this establishment bodes perfectly to help you unwind, from the moment you drive in the main gate.

Activities abound in the area, or, you can simply choose to relax next to one of the two pools on site.

The bedrooms are a real haven of peace and with Charlotte Rhys products in your bathroom, with supplied gown and slippers; you cant go wrong there either.

All round a magnificent stay, wonderful staff; what a great property.

See you soon Granny Mouse !

We have visited the hotel a number of times over the last 20 years. From time to time we eat there and have a drink at the Mouse & Lion bar (which is gone) as we live in Balgowan. We had friends up from Cape Town and we recomended it based on previous warm and happy experience. Sadly not what we remembered. It looks "shiny bright" and what I mean by that is it looks like an international chain hotel with glass and concrete floors in the main building. The Midlands is no place to have concrete floors as it can get bitterly cold and woodeen floors or carpets keep the warmth. The wooden country atmosphere is gone, the carpets and warmth in the building and the people is gone. Our friends from CT remarked at how unfriendly they staff were. Sadly the old Mouse and Lion bar with its wonderful U shaped bar is gone making way for the "shiny bright" straight bar and the overall bar area has lost all its atmosphere.

On the positive side, the rooms were cosy with views over the small valley and the fireplace in the room was a welcome addition with the nights down to 1deg.

Would we ask friends to stay with us at the "shiny bright" international chain style hotel again or at a traditional Midlands country hotel with warm building (no concrete floors) and warm people? I am sure you know what we will choose next time.

If you want glass and concrete when you are having breakfast this is for you, but make sure you have warm boots.

We only stayed at Granny Mouse for one night but it was such a treat. The rooms were gorgeous and the bath tub was huge with a stunning view over the valley. We did 2 spa treatments while we were there and both were great. For dinner we opted for the 'fine dining' expereince but to be honest we had no idea that there was a normal restuarant available and if we had we would have rather gone there. Although the 'fine dining' food was tasty I don't think it was worth the price and the top little annex lacked atmosphere. That evening we returned to our room to a bubble bath, candles and rose petals that had been scattered everywhere - dreamy! Overall a wonderful stay and I'd definitely recommend for a special weekend away.

Located in the KZN Midlands Meander, this is a place my partner and I have decided to visit regularly. Even though we were there quite early (10h00), our room was ready a couple of hours before check-in. And while we waited we took a walk around the beautiful surroundings and rode bicycles (which they provided) around the area. Our garden room had a nice view looking over the pool by the spa. On either a sunny day or a runny day, one of the many siting areas and/or restaurants provided a perfect place to pass by the lazy mornings or afternoons. While my partner swam in the beautiful pool in front of the restaurant, it enjoyed a glass wine over his book, I sat on the couches in one of the lounges doing some work on my laptop or enjoying a cup of cappuccino with their freshly baked scones. It was very cosy and the staff were friendly, striking a peaceful balance between not being in your face the whole time and being there whenever you needed them. The culinary experience was also satisfactory at decent prices. My partner could not stop completing their wine list. Definitely a place we will visit again.

Our trip was truly relaxing. The scenery and customer service specifically the food and beverage team were truly service orientated.
The house keeping team also ensured that the place was neat and tidy specifically ensuring that COVID regulations are abided by.
I would have thought that the rooms would have been renovated as they are now looking old and drab.

Sadly I was not impressed with our stay here. To find the bath with a dirty ring of scum inside it is unacceptable. It leaves you wondering about the general cleaning practices... I had to call Housekeeping to wash the bath.
We had dinner at The Eaves restaurant and the service was immensely slow - it took an hour for our food to arrive.
I got the feeling that the staff were slightly disinterested in guests as most of our requests were met without enthusiasm.
It really is a pity as the setting and hotel grounds are pretty and give you a lovely country feel.

A good concept of cottages around a central restaurant, lovely open views from private balconies and impressive glass roofed dining room.
But the restaurant service was very slow and needed more training- we had one wrong order although the waiter had double checked the order so must have been a kitchen problem. They adjusted the bill which was fine but the fact we had to revert to our third choice wine means management need to get a grip.
Shame and maybe a little harsh as we’d just had a wonderful stay by comparison at Montusi.

We visited Granny Mouse on a rainy cold weekend and had a wonderful weekend away. The breakfast is absolutely delicious with a wide variety of hot and cold food. The new conservatory is stunning. We only ate in the bistro and enjoyed the pizza and burger special. We had a lovely wine tasting with Peter who was very interesting. The fire place in the room and the electric blankets were such a treat. The Spa is needing an upgrade and both my mother and my treatments were only 50 minutes instead of the full hour. Beautiful fountains found around the property which where very soothing on the soul. I felt completely recharged after my stay.

Try using the suggested booking agent for comparable prices...very easy to book through them. We stay at the River chalets but not at the Spa.
