Meerendal Boutique Hotel is housed in a gorgeous Cape Dutch Building. The rooms are spacious and clean. It has the potential to be superb but it lacks warmth and personality. Part of it is that all COVID protocol makes it very impersonal. None of the receptionists where warm and friendly. None asked to show you around or to explain how breakfasts/room service worked. They really looked like they would have preferred not to be there. Next to a small bottle of welcome wine are 2 bottles of sanitizers - one for hands and one for surfaces. I would have preferred a small vase of flowers to warm the room up. Breakfast is served in the market area 100 meters away. Food ok, service slow and not the place if you are looking for a romantic morning after breakfast. The stay was perfectly adequate but it lacks that extra touch that makes you want to come back.

I enjoyed the peaceful nature of the property with amazing views. I also found the hotel room unit private with a relaxing nature. The stuff was helpful. The restaurant on the property was also a bonus ... the steak is very much in the top rate at affordable price actually.

It was sad to see the effects that Covid had on the hotel, even though the hotel is beautiful, clean and well maintained, i did not see a single staff member at the hotel. I was checked in by the security guard on my arrival and dropped the keys with them again at departure, the only time i saw a staff member was when i could not unlock my safe. Food at both restaurants was excellent but service was a little slow, especially seeing that i was the only person in the restaurant when i was there

I know the term Boutique Hotel is often over used …and once again this is a case of such!

A) it is not a Hotel, it is a non serviced guesthouse
B) has very few services if any
C) don’t expect food and especially after 6pm
D) Emory mini bar… no snacks

With regards breakfast, you share the same service as the public with which ever venue is open at the estate at the time. This is my third night here and if I had not asked I wouldnt have known that they closed the previous farmstall venue and I now need to eat at Carluccis.

I was told this morning that I am unable to spend more than £5 on breakfast as part of the ‘4* Star Hotel package’ thus if you wish coffee, smoothie or orange juice all extra cost!!?….hmmm not great. Previous breakfast I could only have orange concentrat (not fresh) or coffee… not both (Farmstall venue) and ski if I wanted a cappuccino then there would be an extra cost!!!

Again great location and very clean. In terms of value for money…GBP£ 110/ night for room (ZAR 2,300/night) I am sure I can get better value and some service elsewhere. I am guessing it caters more for the local market…if I was earning ZAR and paying that amount per night …not sure I would be that happy

Please don’t expect to eat or have someone on estate assist after 7:30pm . I arrived in Cape Town in the evening 8pm , whilst in Joburg I attempted to call a few times over 2 days to confirm my booking (which I booked through Hotel.com ). After 6 calls it was answered, but No one could tell be if I had a reservation . I also wanted to notify them that I would be later and would it be possible to I have some food or a sandwich on arrival! Again no one answered earlier that day too on the designated telephone number.

It is a nice clean guesthouse in a great setting but don’t expect any service…and at times WiFi

Overpriced for what you get, and l no service or curl et service . Perhaps the owner should spend more time at the location rather than managing remotely from Malta!

Overall Average at best (based on cleanliness and location ) but could be something much better… a real shame. My next business trip will be at another ’ Boutique’ venue perhaps in Hout Bay, Camps bay or Blouberg

Response from Michéle Rademeyer, General Manager at Meerendal Boutique Hotel
Responded 13 Jun 2022
Good day My apologies for the delay in response! Thank you so much for taking the time and making the effort to revue your stay with us. A lot has changed since your visit one of which is a beautiful Restaurant open from 7 AM until 10:30PM. Our reception hours have been extended as we recover from covid. Thank you once again and I hope to have the opportunity of welcoming you back personally. Kind regards Michéle

Sadly the experience at the Meerendal Hotel was very disappointing.

On arrival, there was ZERO service and hospitality. Not even a welcome. Just a key hand over with no explanation of where your room is, breakfast, etc.

After coming back to the hotel after a wedding, the security guard completely ignored us and wouldn’t open up for us - he could see we were struggling with the remote and wouldn’t assist at all. He was rude and unhelpful. This was unacceptable.

We thought the gate would open with our remote but apparently it’s a panic button. Something we didn’t know and the staff never communicated on arrival!!!

Breakfast was included but you couldn’t spend over R110. So essentially if you are ordering a breakfast, coffee and juice, you are going to have to pay in.

For what you pay, this was a waste.
I won’t not recommend this hotel.

Really impressed with this hotel. The wine estate is beautiful with fantastic views all around, the rooms are big and comfy and include lots of nice touches such as a Nespresso machine with pods. The bed was comfortable, the bathroom stunning and we had a pleasant and peaceful sleep. There are two restaurants on-site, we had breakfast at Bossa where the staff were happy to accommodate our vegan diet and made us a custom fry-up, which we really appreciated. All the staff at Meerendal are super friendly and helpful. Lots of stuff to do at the wine estate also, such as wine tasting, walking and bike riding around the vineyards. Highly recommend to anyone wanting a peaceful getaway in a scenic location.

I’ve stayed there before and enjoyed my stay. The rooms are great. However when I booked I want not aware the garden cottage was separate from the hotel hence me staying in a cottage away from my parents which I opted for them to stay in hotel. Such a pity as the room selections featured the hotel rooms. However the cottage room was as nice as the hotel. I did not rate the dinner well as the steak I had was over done and my dads fish he ordered was the off cuts of the tail. No amenities apart from hand soap in a dispense which is far out of reach from the bath. The pillows are to die for I wanted to check the make as previously I also loved the pillows but once again forgot. They the best pillows I’ve ever slept on.

The room and shared facilities at Meerendal are good. Sadly, the staff, the catering (for the breakfast) and the maintenance of the some of the room facilities are poor. Our visitors were expected to park approximately 250 meters away from the hotel while staff are allowed to park next to the hotel. When this absurdity was raised with the receptionist we were informed that they are not allowed to contact the manager on the weekend. Clearly a hotel that is not managed will also not be interested in addressing the concerns of guests.
This hotel has so much potential but clearly the management (and possibly the owner) has no interest in utilising this remarkable opportunity.

Beautiful place with a choice of two onsite restaurants. New and upmarket finishes in the rooms throughout. All facilities in the room where well maintained and in good condition with battery backup globes in the bed lamps.

Booked to stay at Meerendal Boutique hotel for my wedding. Rooms were beautiful, service was great and they were regularly cleaned. Staff was very helpful in making our stay comfortable.
Only negative comment would be the breakfast served at the Meerendal farm stall - service was very slow and we waited very long to get a cold coffee, and average meal.
