Ok, maybe in Africa they hate it when you refer to things based on the movie, in which case apologies, but the main lodge as well as our thatched garden cottage very much gave me the feeling of the understated elegance of Karen Blixen’s eclectic farm lodge in the movie Out of Africa. Sure, if you stay in Plett Bay you can have the view of the beach, but if you choose to stay at Hunter’s, you’ll have an entirely different experience not normally found. The grounds were beautiful, the buildings were wonderful, our thatched cottage was very comfortable and welcoming, the bed was good quality, etc, etc, all excellent.

The staff here were exceptionally friendly and helpful, starting with the competent and energetic Patrick, an excellent host.

For dinners, we did Sage (excellent) and Tsala (where we were less impressed - started with a duck appetizer and, having had some fantastic versions of this at other restaurants, I had to ask my wife, ‘where’s the duck here?’ - also thought the meal here was overpriced for what we had - anyways, Sage was by far a better experience for us). My only other point worth mentioning is that I think they should have more signage for the walkways to the restaurants, plus I think it would be a really good idea to give guests a site map on arrival, showing all the buildings, restaurants and paths.

None of that detracts from the first-rate overall experience. I would happily stay at this excellent hotel again anytime, and am happy to recommend it highly. It really was a unique experience, don’t miss it!

We just needed a nights stay on our way from Stellenbosch to Port Elizabeth and Hunter's was perfect. Tsala, Hunter's and Laird's are all in the same park area however, the pictures of Hunter's were the most beautiful to me. When we arrived I was not disappointed. Very beautiful lodge with attention to detail. There is a great deal of nature all around and even some monkeys running around the property. There is a pool, gym area, a high class restaurant with absolutely delicious food. Close by there is another restaurant we did not have the time of trying. The bedrooms were small compared to what we are used to in this category of hotel but beds were comfortable, everything was perfectly clean although you will have your random bug in the room due to ground floor rooms and being in the wild. The area is colorful with lots of flowers.

I'd read the negative reviews before we visited and I think I must have been staying somewhere else...this place was like heaven. The grounds are beautiful and had deer roaming the lawns and monkeys swinging from the trees.
We stayed in the garden cottages and thought they were magical - the furniture is antique, so I suppose that may not be to some people's taste, but we loved it - it felt like stepping back in time.
They thought of everything to make your stay special, quotes left on the bed each night, a bedtime treat left in glass cloches at the side of the bed. Complimentary drinks in the drawing room and boma before dinner, candles and matches by the bath, and on the day we left they handed us a brown paper bag filled with water and homemade biscuits for our onward journey.
Food; both breakfast and dinner were amazing and all of the staff were wonderful. It doesnt feel like a hotel, it feels more like you are a special guest at someone's country home. We really didnt want to leave and cannot wait to return.

We spent 3 nights here while travelling on the Garden Route. At first we thought that it might be too far out of Plettenberg Bay but it turned out to be closer than we though and it was great to return to the peace and quiet of the countryside. The hotel grounds are really well kept and provided space to take some nice walks. We stayed in room 31 which was lovely but next door to a staff area so occasionally we heard noise. If returning we would choose a room further from the main building. The staff were all friendly and helpful and the whole place made you feel relaxed. There were plenty of places to sit, our favourite being the summer room which had beautiful furniture. We ate dinner here twice but the menu doesn't change which makes choice a bit limited. It was a nice touch when they provided a little bag with water and cookies when you were leaving. Overall we enjoyed our stay.

The last time we were at this restaurant it was fantastic, so we had great expectations. Sadly, they were not met. My husband and the other man in our group ordered the duck dish to share (it was advertised as a dish for two) and us girls ordered the pork belly. Our meal was very tasty and the only complaint we had was that the ravioli had been left in the warmer too long and had become hard and rubbery... Otherwise a super dish. The men on the other hand were horrified when their dish arrived with two bite-sized pieces of duck and two bite-sized pieces of chicken! Surely this could not be the very expensive dish they had ordered, this must be for one person... We called the waiter, and he called the manager who confirmed that the order was correct, but the menu was wrong! They had forgotten to mention the chicken! She agreed that the portion size was very small and returned a while later with more meat. Sadly, the duck was very tough so a complete disappointment.
Then came dessert, and us girls decided on the panacotta for two (by now we should have know better). It arrived, and was most definitely a single portion, extremely expensive at R176! And to be honest, I've had better.
This venue has a great ambiance, beautiful setting and great staff just a pity about the food!

This is a beautiful hotel. The rooms are so cozy with open fireplace and comfy beds. It rained during our trip and we had the fire lit and hosestly it was fabulous. There is a roll top bath in some rooms that was very quaint. It is close to various great attractions like monkey world and walking with the elephants. The food was excellent in both restauranta and reasonably priced. Drinks in the mini bar and restaurants are also good prices. The breakfasts are delicious with plenty of choice from pastries to full English breakfast.all excellent quality. Beautiful surrounding where we saw various tropical birds and monkeys playing in the garden. A very special place. We will be back. I was afraid to do a nice review as it is a secret hidden gem!!!! We loved it!!

We had a wonderful stay here in a family room (the children were close enough but not too close!) with its own terrace where we saw monkeys and other wildlife.
The gardens are beautiful and the thatched cottages are spaced apart so everyone gets some privacy.
The main restaurant was rather formal, but we especially loved Zinzi where we also went with the children (aged 4 & 1).
There is a lovely area for children to enjoy with toys, ride on cars, sandpit, jungle gym etc which made for two happy campers.
The pool area was beautiful, the gardens relaxed and i really enjoyed your divine 7am yoga classes
Thank you from us all.

As other reviewers have mentioned before, Hunters Country House is a tranquil and wonderfully located hotel between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay. We had several dinners at Zinzi Restaurant which is located on the same grounds.

We are writing this review because a few weeks ago - on our way back from Zinzi to Knysna - we got into riots on the N2 and were attacked by a group of people. The car was damaged and my wife was severely injured. We returned to Zinzi and asked for help - the managers of Tzsala Treetop and Hunters Lodge went out of their way to accommodate us for the night (with no charge), provided first aid, and helped arranging a new rental car. We rarely before experienced such outstanding hospitality and were more than grateful for the assistance they offered. We highly recommend Hunters Country House, their management and staff.

Traditional Country House hospitality is alive and well at Hunters. It is almost impossible to believe that, in this day and age, and, I daresay, in this country, there is still a country house hotel living up to all the exacting standards of that much abused appellation. It's a throw back to the wonderful old traditions which have largely been lost.
Hunters is 5 star. Its restrained elegance is complemented by a truly amazing staff (Patrick was in charge when I arrived) who just cannot do enough for their guests in a manner that is both unobtrusive and unpretentious. The room I had (suite #12 'Pennygum') was beautiful; set in the beautifully laid out gardens, it had a fire place, aircon, a thick natural carpet, even a small chandelier to make it 'pop', a small private outdoor seating area, and a magnificently comfortable king size bed with an excellent matress and the best quality linen. The bathroom, also of understated elegance was beautiful, with excellent shower, a heater and and CR cosmetics.
Breakfasts in the Conservatory were sumptuous, with all kinds of seasonal fresh fruit, an excellent muesli, selection of meats and cheeses, smoked salmon, and a hot course. Service from Donald was excellent.
Unfortunately, I didn't dine in-house but but the menus at three restaurants on the estate looked marvelous. There are several lovely lounges, an honesty bar, a gym, yoga room and sumptuous swimming pool, mercifully unheated.
All of this a mere 10 minutes out of Plettenberg Bay where value for money doesn't come close to Hunters. Just under R3000 per night B&B, and, for all the luxury and service one gets, a steal, even for local South Africans, in a market dominated by Europeans.
Don't miss out!

This guest house us like staying in a perfect National Trust property, the gardens and pool area are stunning and immaculately maintained. The main building with reception rooms and dining area are so warm and comfortable. The accommodation ranges from individual thatched cottages to smaller rooms with en suite which is what we had, with a little private seating area to sit out. The room was lovely and comfortable as was the bathroom. Our reception on arrival was warm and friendly with a choice of a glass of champagne or sparkling water then when we were shown to our room there was a complimentary bottle of wine and also the first drink from our fridge was complimentary too. The 2 restaurants on the site were both really nice although we preferred the Sage Restaurant, but it is just a matter of taste. Both were very reasonably priced. Breakfast was lovely too with a small continental selection and the choice of something from the kitchen. An excellent stay and so handy for all the things around Plettenberg Bay, the entrance is opposite the entrance to Knysna Elephant Sanctuary (well worth a visit)

In South Africa you are much better off using Uber. They are cheaper and more reliable. We had a car to get to and from however we did see other guests using Uber.

Knysna is 20km, Plett 10km. Taxis are available through Uber. They would be easy to get, but I don’t know how much it would be. In Cape Town, a half hour journey was about £10 I think. Certainly not going to break the bank. Hope that helps!

2 things here, have an alternative plan for Shark diving. I booked in 2 different cities and everything was cancelled due to unpredictable ocean. S.A. is known for unpredictable weather so things may look great and then be cancelled in short notice. 2nd, there is no spa on hand however the concierge can arrange for a masseuse to come directly to your room. It was affordable and the rooms are serene enough to relax.

How far is it to the Robberg Nature Reserve?
Answer from bryan W
40 contributions23 helpful votes
Plan between 15-20 mins to get there. As for the reserve, you can spend 1/2 a day there easily. Make sure to pack snacks or a light lunch as there is nothing around. It's 100% worth the stop however.
