On our tour to the Natal battlefields we stopped over for lunch at the Platrand Lodge. A stunning setting, memorable building and interior. Friendly and efficient service. I can recommend the lovely chicken pie and fresh salad .

This is a beautiful, clean and friendly venue just outside Ladysmith. The friendly staff and commitment to service excellence was refreshing. Everything in the room was in working condition. The rooms are very clean. The linen and towels are of good quality. Highly recommended.

Recently stayed over at Platrand on a business trip, worst experience in a long time! The establishment boasts a 4 star rating, I didn't even experience two stars!
First night on arrival, a quiet restaurant, looking forward to a good dinner. Well the decorations look cheap, the tablecloths are worn, cheap utensils and well worn.
Tried to order something different to the menu, no ways! We only have 200g fillet steaks, take it or leave it!
Wine was priced ok, but the dinner menu akward and very unconventionally priced. Asked for breadrolls - "we only serve breadrolls with soup"!
Asked whether I could buy some, no response, waitress just disappears, arrives 10 mins later with 2 stale, microwaved wholewheat rolls - small ones!
waited another 20 minutes for food, no waitress in sight! Fillet was overdone, veggies really ordinary, no chef's cooking!
Furthermore, plain rooms from the dark ages, black stone floors and bathroom, no bottled water, no telephone! So you have to walk to reception or phone from your cell to order anything!
Bed really uncomfortable, didn't sleep well for a week.
Breakfast? dont go there! Two rubbery, overdone eggs, plus choice of dried out bacon and a few unappetizing pork sausages! Try to order a cappucino, you'll wait for it, that's once you get hold of a waiter.
Waiters also double as cleaners and sweepers ( while you're trying to sip on a cold one on the verandah, with the same horrible (sticky) CD everyday!
Set in beautiful surroundings though, but will never go back there!

A colonial style lodge with impressive ambience. Gruff maitre’d that we found pleasant as he could impersonate Nick Cave.

Very nice surrounding and decent food.

The room was not clean and it was crumbling with cracks in the wall and above the bathtub and the windows could not be properly closed leading to dozens and dozens and dozens of mosquitos in the room. All this is weird as we are told the building is barely more than 10 years old, not the 100+ it appears to be.

I am not familiar with Ladysmith area - this may be the best place there (especially for hunters?), but it was on the low end of the several lodges we stayed in on our SA trip.

We have spent 2 nights in Platrand Logde, where we already stayed 4 years ago. The view is splendid and the comfort of the family room very OK. Good food, very afrikan ambiance, which was so great for us. At night, some kudus came on the parking to say hello before going back in the dark... We will definitively come back!

We had a decent enough stay at the lodge, the rooms are spacious and have a nice view but that's about where the praise ends. Upon reflecting I'm not too sure about the condition of some of the horses at the lodge and the complete disregard for the friendly, feral cat colony that are not fed or sterilized is also very off putting. While I know they have no obligation to do this, staying at a lodge where people just generally don't care about other living beings is really off putting

However the main reason for this review is the service we have received after we left has been horrific.
As it was a company trip for a week we asked if we could pre-pay for the accommodation, to which the lodge reluctantly agreed, we explained why we would like to pre-pay and not once was the offer to pay after departure mentioned. Upon our departure on Friday we were charged the full amount again. On Monday I got an email where we were basically blamed for the mistake, saying "This is the reason they don't allow pre-payment as there are multiple people who work at the front desk." and that they do allow for payment after departure. We were then told that the invoice we were issued was actually around R2000 short.

The issue has been sorted out and refunds and amended invoices issued, however not one apology has been issued and the email correspondence has been curt and uninformative. We will not be bringing our business back to this establishment again.
