Surrounded by low hills that slope up to the towering peaks of the Drakensberg and Free State Mountains. Spion Kop Lodge is the ideal place from where to explore the battlefields, set on an echo farm in Kwazulu-Natal. General Buller’s headquarters during the relief of the Ladysmith campaign, Mount Alice, is located on the farm. The beautifully restored, 8 bedroomed colonial-style farmhouse, is set in tranquil, secure grounds with superb views. Added to this there are two cottages, offering self-catering accommodation in an out-of-Africa setting. There is a library with an excellent collection of historical books, a dining room, cozy pub and a swimming pool. The owner and registered guide, Raymond Heron (F.R.G.S), guides guests to the many historic Battlefield sites, as does his son Alastair. We have 250 different bird species, hiking on the property and Sunset Boat Cruises and horse riding amongst the rhino, giraffe and various other animals. "Arrive as guests, leave as friends."

A fantastic property, owner-run overlooking the 'Spionkop' Battlefield, and was Britain’s biggest one day military loss. Raymond Heron owner and guide held even the youngest guest captive with his amazing story telling skills. His brief 300-year history lesson of South Africa should be bottled and sold to all South African residents. Mount Alice, which is exclusively for Spiokop Lodge guests, has amazing views into the Tugela Valley. The tour is obviously a must do for any visitor as Raymond is a raconteur par excellence. Lynette his affable wife runs the extremely tidy and comfortable lodge on a small game farm straddling the Spionkop Reserve. The food is honest and plentiful and we look forward to revisiting when the museum is complete.
Highly recommended and a great value for money product.

The self-catering unit at the lodge is spacious and comfortable. The cottage is surrounded by well maintained gardens and guests have access to the restaurant and swimming pool. We were welcomed by the hosts Raymond and his son Alistair. Staff were friednly and polite. Our Voortrekker trip with Ramond was extremely enlightening - he gave a balanced account of the wars in that time. Each of us learnt something new. I would highly recommend this. Our boat trip with Alistair was re-scheduled to a morning trip instead of afternoon as the wind really pumps in the afternoon and the boat cannot be launched. Wonderful bird and animal sightings. We highly recommend the lodge and the area as there is a lot of exploring to do.

Much more beautiful than I expected or could have anticipated.
I travelled to Spion Kop Lodge with my husband, with the sole purpose of visiting the Spion Kop Battleground to scatter some of my father's ashes there. It was a trip my father and I had wanted to make together but weren't able to.
We arrived on a scorching hot New Year's Eve, concerned that the tour of The Kop could not go ahead in the coming days due to predicted rain. The team gave us directions to visit Spion Kop on our own first and after lunch, we were able to head out to the moving location and do what we went to do before heading back and diving into the beautiful rock pool with amazing birdlife all around us.
Even though we were the only two guests for dinner on the first night, they kept the restaurant open for us - and even accommodated our vegan lifestyle.
As predicted, the much-needed rain and thunder arrived at midnight and rang in the new year. It poured for two days but we still enjoyed our accommodations and meals and almost two hours with Raymond Heron discussing the history of South Africa and the battle at Spion Kop. Thank you, Lynette, Raymond, Alistair, and staff. You made an emotional trip incredibly relaxing and special.

Dear Cisca It was wonderful meeting you here at Spion Kop Lodge ! I realised that it was a rather emotional and special trip for you , and on hearing that you had planned to visit with your Father , made it more moving for me ! I was so pleased that we had discussed the reason for your visit on arrival and that you were able to see the Battlefield and surrounds in good weather ! At least when Raymond presented his talk to you ,it was easy for you to envision the scene on Spion kop on the 24.01.1900. I know how much it meant to you and your connection with your father ! Thank you for sharing the details of the book , Guns, Germs and Steel with us, I have tried to order a copy for Raymond. Nothing gives him more pleasure than sharing his hobby and passion for the history ,with like minded people. Thank you for your positive feed back ! Wishing you all the best for 2021. Stay safe and well. Regards , Raymond, Lynette, Alastair and all at Spion Kop Lodge

We'd like to thank one and all at Spionkop Lodge for a fantastic experience.
We ended up there, almost by accident when we planned our 5 week trip from Canada 6 months prior.
My South African husband had not been back in 20 years and he chose the lodge mainly because it was a convenient place to overnight enroute Drakensburg to game reserve.
Unexpectedly, it was one of the grand highlights of our 5 weeks. From the peaceful setting of the lodge, lovely breakfast and the heartrendering and fascinating tour offered. Our family had the pleasure of having Raymond take us out. It was immediately clear this is not a vocational pastime for him, but something done out of love and passion. In the words of our 14 year old son," I thought he was going to be a cranky old farmer, but he was such a cool dude!"
I can't put a value on the lesson and perspective it gave our Canadian born kids on the other half of their heritage.
Me as well.... I have framed a picture of the cypress tree on top of Spionkop, as a reminder on days when I feel like tossing my kids out on the streets.
Cheers Spionkop Lodge...I hope you're still up and running for our grandkids.
The Cuthbertson family

Greetings to The Cuthbertson Family I hope my response finds you safe and well ! We so enjoyed meeting your Canadian/South African Family! I think that your choice to come to Spion Kop Lodge, in order for your children to learn about their South African Heritage, was perfect ! Raymond just loves sharing his knowledge on the History and presents in such a comprehensive and concise manner ! As your son said : " Such a cool dude!" The Cypress Trees is such a moving story ! I often wish the Family had kept their contact details ,so that members of the Sleigh Family , could see the "living Memorial " ,for themselves. I too hope that the Lodge will be here for your grandchildren ! We have just celebrated our 22 year anniversary, not sure whether Raymond and I will be here but our Family will be continuing ,as we are situated on our family Farm! I hope you have not been too badly affected by Covid-19 ! Kind Regards From All at Spion Kop Lodge ! Raymond and Lynette Heron

We decided to visit the Natal battlefields with family who were visiting from the UK.
After some research, we chose Spionkop Lodge which has spacious accommodation and also offers various guided tours.
We were not disappointed - everything was far better than we could ever have expected. From my initial phone call to the Lodge to the excellent accommodation and delicious "home style" restaurant meals and the tours conducted by acknowledged expert on the subject, Raymond Heron, we were blown away!
Raymond provided a wealth of information, including names, dates, weapons used, Boer and British strategy and took us to all the sites, museums etc in the area. A wonderful experience which we hoped would never end. All in all it was nothing short of fantastic.

Stayed in Aloe cottage for 4 nights self catering.
Impressed with facilities provided. 2 plate stove and oven, microwave, sandwich maker , toaster etc with an array of kitchen utensils including sharp kitchen knives.
Location and grounds perfect for a stay in the Natal Berg area.
Very pleased we went on the Spionkop tour. Alastair gave us a real insight into the events leading up to and during the battle.
Cottage was well furnished including patio furniture and Weber braai.
Bed was more than comfortable
Lounge furniture maybe could do with new foam in the cushions?
Worth noting main bedroom does not have an en suite whereas twin bed does.
It was serviced daily before lunch time.
No aircon but fans provided.
Staff all very pleasant.
Daisy the adorable Jack Russel was a permanent visitor and would have stayed all night i think:-)
Yes it did have its fair share of " wildlife" inside, including frogs, but it is in the country and relativily isolated so one needs to appreciate that fact.
Would certainly stay again.

We stayed at Spionkop Lodge purposefully to do the Spionkop Battlefield tour with Raymond and we weren't disappointed. His style is entertaining and interesting as one can forget that South Africa has a past that goes back more than a few decades. The lodge is set on a beautiful farm that we were able to explore and we enjoyed three meals at the restaurant which were all delicious in a lovely, relaxed atmosphere. I would definitely recommend Spionkop for anyone in the area.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would easily go back. The property is in a peaceful location far from noises and crowds, and easily accessible.
Dealing with the staff, mostly Happy, in the booking process was a pleasure, too; very helpful and accommodating.
We did the Spionkop battlefields tour and that was most interesting, Raymond knows his stuff!

You go here for the battlefield and you would be daft not to take the tour with them. They bring it alive. The Lodge is like a museum themed towards the battle. Traditional food and drink in the colonially impressive restaurant and bar is a delight as is breakfast on the terrace. The setting is sensational. Quality rooms - they even have Daisy the dog to accompany. A treat we loved it.

Thank you so much for your comments , great to have someone who really appreciates the Historic value of this property and how we have tried to maintain the buildings etc. Yes Daisy ,just loves the way she is spoilt by our visitors, who adopt her while they are here! No wonder she will not allow us to introduce any other dogs ! I am so pleased you enjoyed the Battlefield Experience! Over the years we have collected many photographs ,diaries ,memorabilia etc and are privileged to be able to house it here. We are busy setting up a complete museum at the lodge, so you will have to return one day to see it ! Take care. Wish you well.
