Zula is a large thatched home perfectly located on the deserted Langstrand at Mosselbank, overlooking the vast bay of Paternoster. The house sleeps up to 6 adults and 4 kids comfortably and has a separate self-contained Cottage for 2 (not included). Dogs are welcome too. Set right on the beach with everything you could possibly need for a family reunion. Enjoy beach walks & runs to work off all the Paternoster wining & dining, as well as an awesome surf or kite surfing spot right in front of the house. Small fishing vessels leave every morning at dawn, returning at dusk with the catch of the day. Paternoster lies virtually in the Columbine Nature Reserve, where displays of wild flowers in spring are unsurpassed.

I stayed at Zula Beach Cottage, and I absolutely loved my stay at Zula Beach Cottage!

It is far better than I imagined, perfect location, dogs loved it, and I will definitely be back!
I happened to read the few negative comments on tripadvisor, and must think those people are complete idiots.
I was surprised by how much more was offered than I expected.. I noticed the hand wash, the milk and filter coffee! And olive oil and salt and spice for cooking. I was truly impressed at how far the owner went to make this place amazing.

So just want to say a very big thank you!
My wife, myself and dogs had a wonderful time, and I have recommended to people to go to Patternoster, and strongly recommend they stay at Zula beach cottage.

This is one of the best places I have ever stayed. I cannot recommend it enough, and I obviously want to return!

We had a second trip to Paternoster and stayed again at Zula- we enjoyed every moment of our stay. It was the week my youngest son got married and the bride and the groom's families stayed together in two adjacent homes. Both families enjoyed the space and luxurious interiors with all the amenities we could wish for. Everybody is still talking about the wonderful time we had and the amazing help from the lovely Nora. We shall certainly love to go there again. Thanks Toni.

The cottage is a perfect. The décor is relaxing and well appointed. You cannot beat the view and its prime position on the beach. We were, however, a little surprised one afternoon after a nap - we went outside and the 'car park' was full! There were surfers, wind surfers, kite surfers, dog walkers a plenty. Not enough to make any noise or spoil the atmosphere. If anything, it felt good to share this piece of paradise with others who clearly appreciated the environs and made best use of its offerings. Take an early morning or a late after beach stroll. You can walk for miles, soaking up the view and the sun. I am actually tempted to return in the winter months to see Paternoster change through the seasons. Don't worry too much about self catering. The restaurants in the village are fabulous - I have several reviews to write!

Thank you for your positive review. The winters are fantastic you will have the beach all to yourselves, you won't have to prebook all your restaurants in advance - although Kobus at Oep ve Koep you do! The windsurfers and kite surfers are only around in Jan and Feb. We are lucky the prevailing wind is behind us. I hope to see you again at Zula and once again thank you for choosing Zula. Toni

In December 2012 upon visiting the West coast town of Paternoster in the Western Cape we came across a house on the beach. The setting was absolutely stunning. We enquired and booked the house for a weekend in March 2013. Upon booking we were informed that a private flat-let adjacent to the house was rented out to someone else. Under the impression that a R 4000.00 per day (which we now understand is the highest rental in the village) house will be value for money we went ahead and paid for the house for 2 families and 5 children. Upon arriving and to our utter dismay we noticed that the flat was actually part of the property and was occupied by 2 people and two dogs. As animal lovers we do tolerate dogs, but two barking and aggressive little dogs walking into your holiday house when you have toddlers are unacceptable and downright irresponsible of the owner. The people that rented the flat locked the front entrance of the house and as a result we had to walk around the house to get to our cars. There is a fantastic unspoilt beach in front of the house and a municipality sign that says no dogs are allowed on the beach. Obviously this did not detract the flat occupiers from walking their dogs on the beach. What amazed us was the fact that the owners rent out a flat on the beach to 2 people and 2 dogs when they very well know that the Municipality does not allow this. On the second night their was no gas to braai with. For some reason the DSTV in the house run from the same decoder as the flat and the channels were changed constantly by the flat owners forcing us to watch their rather boring Television programmes. We complained with the owner and she then offered a complimentary weekend and in fact emailed us to choose a weekend. The morning we left we called the the owner Toni Shina to ask what we should do with the keys, she told us that the housekeeper was on her way and that we could leave the key in the door, we then left. The next day when we confirmed the complimentary weekend we received the following response:

"After consultation with my husband and Housekeeper, I am unable to offer you a complimentary weekend. You left my home open and vulnerable and you did not respect my home.

Sincerely
Toni Shina"

Somehow we were not surprised at all by the retraction of the offer. On the contrary we were indeed very surprised by the initial offer given the ridiculous set-up we experienced over the weekend. It almost look as if the owner run the house as a backpacker set-up, trying to cramp as many people as possible into the house and flat, thereby gaining maximum return.

In my 23 years of being a leader in the tourism industry, I have never experienced such a client. We value our clients' public feedback and all social media opportunities so that we are continuously able to improve our service and product. The client's wife was extremely apologetic for the insults that were spoken to me over the telephone as late as 10.30pm. Our housekeeper informed me that our home had never been left in such a filthy state. Not to mention that they left the property exposed when they left. This is definitely a case of the less said the better.

We stayed at the Zula cottage for 2 nights in February as a resting spot during our tour of the west coast of South Africa and Namibia. The location of the cottage is superb, directly next to a long sandy beach. The cottage is very nicely furnished, but disappoints in other ways. Firstly, the ONLY windows in the main room are sliding glass doors to the patio. No others. That means that one cannot open a window to get air at night (other than in the adjacent kitchenette), because the sliding doors must be kept locked at all times as there is no security around the property. One of the door handles was also broken, which made operation of it cumbersome. Nevertheless, February is Africa's hottest month, so it was very difficult to try to sleep in a hot room, without air conditioning or even a fan... and no windows to open for circulation.

There is a short concrete wall around the patio, which means that you cannot see the view unless standing. Adjacent to the cottage is a much larger rental house, which shadows much of the patio. So, unless one sits in the lounge of the cottage, the sea view is not visible. The patio had 2 folding slouch chairs which we were requested to bring indoors at night. On both occasions that I tried to sit in one of the lounge chairs, it collapsed. The first time, I was outdoors on the brick patio, but fortunately did not land too hard. The second time, the chair was indoors and I hurt myself quite badly when I landed on the tile floor with a big thump as the chair collapsed. I am NOT an overweight person, so my cushioning is limited. My butt was sore and bruised for days. We notified the owners, so undoubtedly those chairs have been replaced since, but if not, be forewarned. Undoubtedly the broken door handle would also be fixed by now.

The toilet seat was also loose, which was very uncomfortable when using the facilities. But generally, it was well laid out and functional with a nice shower. There is a very small operational window in the washroom, but the way it is positioned, we did not want to put toiletries or jewelry on the counter or ledge, as the roadside/driveway exterior of the cottage was directly on the other side and an arm could easily reach through the window from outside. There wasn't another place in the washroom to put one's things.

As a self-catering cottage, we were disappointed to find it so poorly laid out. It was impossible to make a meal and the braii (BBQ) was very small and needed to be carted in and out with it's stand if one wanted to use it, so we didn't bother trying to cook. The stove had been disconnected prior to our arrival, but my husband found the plug, directly below the sink and next to the water pipe. It was cumbersome to reach, but we were able to make coffee in the morning, albeit a bit concerned about how close the electrical outlet was to water.

The DSTV did not have an instructional manual, so we never were able to get it going. We don't normally watch TV when on vacation, but it would have been nice to listen to music when indoors.

The security of the premises was questionable. We were instructed to ensure that we locked up and put on the alarm every time we left the cottage, even if only to walk on the beach. Although this is understandable in South Africa, it's disconcerting knowing that (1) the sliding gate to the main driveway did not function properly, (2) the gate from the patio to the beach was a small wooden one without a proper closure, so anyone could come in, and (3) the wall around the patio was high enough to obstruct the view when sitting, but low enough that any beggar from the beach or adjacent parking area could come to speak to us or see us when outside or inside (unless one pulled the curtains, which we didn't do, considering that was our only daylight).

I would think that the main, big house would be a perfect spot to rent for a much larger family. We were only 2, so it was far too big and expensive for us. Undoubtedly it would be perfect for a bigger group if privacy is not a concern having a cottage on the premises. However, I would not recommend the cottage unless self-catering or sitting outside to enjoy the view is not important. To us, it was why we booked Paternoster's Zula Cottage vs elsewhere... we thought we'd enjoy both. The owners have graciously offered that we should return and have a night's free stay, but honestly, don't think we would unless a few changes were made to the building generally.

Thank you so much for your comprehensive review and appreciate your constructive feedback. We have supplied a fan and notify our clients that we recommend they sleep with the glass doors open as the shutters allow for airflow. The kitchenette and bathroom windows can both be left open while not compromising the security. Your suggestion that we supply a cupboard for your bathroom items has been noted. Thank you! With regards to the broken handle and toilet seat, we have fixed both these items. I do apologise for the chair - it was brand new! Subsequent to your stay we have built a barbeque (braai) area with lovely non-breakable metal tables and chairs for the patio. Regarding the security - there are external beams for added peace of mind, the low walls are in keeping with the architectural aesthetics of the village. The view- I am sorry the view did not live up to your expectations - the photographs say it all! We have never had a complaint regarding the view! We hope your enjoyed the rest of your stay in South Africa. Our offer of a complimentary night stands should you wish to come and experience the improvements.

This cottage has a great view and a stunning location. It has a lovely private yard. This is a stunning place to have a weekend escape. There are also lots of restaurants to choose from within walking distance. The cottage itself has a beach decorative feel, and is lovely and clean. All the necessary cooking utensils are there. You will love this place. Perfect for a couple.

Thank you very much for everything. We had such a marvellous stay at your beautiful place where we all had a great weekend. The kids loved the house and proximity to the beach as we did too. We spent many hours trawling the rock pools for small fish and prodding anemones to close their mouths.

We hired a private chef for the time we were there which meant we could all really relax and not worry about meals and cleaning up dishes. She even arranged pizza making and icing activities for the kids.

The weather was on top form and the outside table and cushions became a favourite spot for us all to take numerous sleeps. We all were so relaxed that we slept all the time.

We hardly left the house, the flow and position made for a great group stay.

There are no negatives to report back. Zula is a wonderful place and we will have fond memories of our time there.

We arrived to the town as part of our honeymoon trip and we found heaven on earth.
The cottage perfectly located as close to the ocean, with breathtaking views and sounds of the waves in the background.
The perfect place for a romantic vacation.
We enjoyed the peace and quiet, walks along the beach and watching the local fishermen, hiking in the area throughout wildflower fields.
The cottage was clean, cozy, comfortable, fully equipped and carefully maintained.
Thank you for amazing vacation!
Expect to return very soon ...

Great place to stay in this cute cottage for two right on the beach. Where else can you lie in bed and see the beach and sea, watch the fisherman at work with peace and only the sea for noise. The housekeeper Nora was very helpful and came when ever we needed something. 14klms of beach to walk on firm white sand with beautiful shells.
Only problem was the wind for that time of year.
