Nestled on the banks of the Atlantic Ocean, Gonana Guesthouse is located on the Bekbaai beach alongside a greenbelt, boasting unrestricted views of the ocean, Columbine Nature Reserve’s coastline and the Cape Columbine Lighthouse. Gonana Guest House is Paternoster’s first sustainable and environmentally conscious guest house. Paternoster is one of the oldest fisherman’s villages and is well known for its warm, generous and hospitable people, pristine beaches and West Coast charm. The guest house offers eight luxurious rooms of which seven has their own private terrace or balcony, with breath-taking sea views, mountain view and garden view. It is virtually off the grid and completely environmentally ethical. All water is recycled, all power is solar generated, plastic usage is minimal and chemicals are taboo, gardens are indigenous and water wise, and décor is all-natural and sourced locally. Their ethos is: ‘Buy local, think global’ Gonana’s eight (8) en-suite rooms are all a study in calm. The neutral palette encourages you to exhale, relax and reconnect with the natural world. Polished cement floors keep suites cool in the hot summers; extra-length, raw wooden beds and headboards lend an earthy feel, as do finely sanded log nightstands. White walls and uncluttered floors give a sense of space, while white percale linen and handwoven cotton towels add finesse. Bathrooms have unique appointments such as hand-crafted metal pipe towel rails and shelf supports, as well as polished wooden whale tail hooks. White subway tiles in the showers give a contemporary touch. Seven (7) of the guest suites have private terrace/balconies, three of which lead directly to the beach, while upstairs the family suite with private terrace can accommodate a small family wanting to stay together. The dining and lounge area is also upstairs and furnished with a solid wooden table and bench seating – strewn with soft Swedish sheepskins - for guests to comfortably enjoy breakfast with a full sea view. Adjacent, the lounge area with skylights is furnished with a collection of classic leather couches complemented by woven leather chairs. Here, you are encouraged to curl up with a book or a cup of coffee/tea and simply exhale. The wide balcony, edged with ample seating and plenty of soft comfy cushions, offers all-day outdoor theatre and sunset views over the Atlantic Ocean. It’s just breathtaking. In the downstairs courtyard, a deep, saltwater, solar heated pool is another relaxation hub where you can nap in the sun on a thick pool mattress – or choose shade surrounded by indigenous gardens. Professional massages are offered in-house, with prior arrangement. There is wifi throughout as well as great coffee table books and board games for entertainment. With prior arrangement, dogs are welcome in certain rooms at Gonana. Since the name Gonana is derived from the Zulu word ‘embrace’, it’s fitting that all who enjoy and appreciate nature and are environmentally conscious are welcomed with open arms at Gonana Guest House. For them, it will absolutely be home from home. Your enjoyment and well being is of utmost importance to the Gonana family. They wish your visit to be special, and will do their utmost best to ensure that you leave with great memories and wonderful experiences

We stayed at the Incredible Gonana for 2 days, the most wonderful lady Thandi looked after us like a queen. We ended up calling her aunty Thandi by the end of out our trip. We were welcomed by a bowl of fresh fruits from the market along with water, All rooms were equipped with sanitizer, and extra mask for travellers who needed more. The bed and pillows are absolutely 5 star quality, The location and details in the bohemian design was just out of this world. We woke up at sunrise and had a beautiful swim at the ocean 10 steps away from our sea view room followed by the most beautiful breakfast and delicious coffee while having sea breeze kissing our face. With the assistance of the Thandi we managed to book massage offered by a mobile spa who came and pampered us in our space of comfort. I could stay forever, but for now, see you soon.

My husband and I used a quiet September weekend to slip away from the Mother City to the beautiful Paternoster, planning to visit the Langebaan National Park in flower season while in the area. Having been in Paternoster before, we knew that Bek Bay where Gonana guesthouse is situated forms part of a the quieter side of town, precisely what we had in mind.

We could not have been more pleased with our booking! Even prior to arrival we were carried on the hands by the staff who reached out to us and offered to book a table at one of the excellent restaurants in town right by the water side. We gladly acccepted their offer and had a delicious dinner while listening to the crashing waves.

The guesthouse itself was absolutely stunning, with stylish decor in a minimalistic, earthly approach. Our bed had crisp white linnen and soft blankets. We had our own door opening onto a private porch, only meters away from the breaking waves and could stroll out straight onto the beach if we'd like. Even when my husband woke up the next morning with a megraine, the staff had a first aid kit ready and a few tablets later, we were ready to enjoy the freshly prepared breakfast. We ate a lovely breakfast while looking out across the bay from the top floor of the guesthouse. All too soon, our stay was over.

This is the perfect guesthouse if you are looking for a quiet stay and personal touch. Because Gonana only has a few rooms, it leaves opportunity for the staff to see to that extra speccial personal touch. Would recommend again and again.

We were so impressed the first time we stayed at Gonana that we decided to stay there again when we went back to Paternoster several months after our first visit. Everything about the experience was positive.... from dealing with Joy the reservations manager, to the warm welcome from Thandi the house manager, the delicious daily breakfast, and the nicely appointed and extremely comfortable rooms. I appreciate how the simple, yet stylish decor showcases local artisans, and how all of the staff were very helpful whenever we had questions or needed anything. The location is fantastic, right on the beach with stunning views from the lounge area, and it was reassuring to know that there were various security features in place, including a night guard to keep an eye on cars in the parking stalls. Gonana Guesthouse is really a gem in Paternoster.

Gonana Guesthouse is a breath of fresh sea air and just what we needed in 2020! My husband and I loved that the beach was truly on our doorstep and that the breakfast room overlooked the beautiful sea! The decor was simple but very tasteful. The best part was that we could bring our little dog, Coco, along for the journey. They truly made her feel as though she was part of the Gonana family and offered her a dog bed and dog bowls! One small area of improvement which would take this to a 5 star would be to adjust the shower pressure or to replace the shower heads with water saving shower heads as we are supportive of water conservation but some days the pressure was so low we couldn’t get the shampoo out our hair. Finally, we need to say that the staff are so friendly and welcoming (even offering to book restaurants for us) they really put us at ease during a very stressful year! I will definitely be back!

Gonana Guest house is located right on the beach of Paternoster (more secluded than the main beach ), Its been my second time in Paternoster but first time at Gonana Guest house.A beautiful guesthouse very well managed , Martine & Thandi our hosts was excellent from a warm welcome on arrival with a fresh glass of orange juice and lovely fruit basket in our room , what more do you need for a breakaway, perfect just to kick off your shoes , put your feet up and soak in the lovey sun on the deck. With waking  up with the sound of the waves breaking and birds singing. We enjoyed a lovely walk on the beach and on our return Thandi prepared a lovely breakfast for us to enjoy overlooking the ocean. Gonana give you a feeling of a "home away from home " and a perfect place to unwind from a busy work week. Speak to Martin he will give you all the hot tip and where to dine. Thank you guys see you soon again

I rarely write hotel reviews, but this time I have to. If I could I would give Gonana Guest House 10 stars.

Truly one of the best places I’ve ever stayed. From checkin until departure this entire stay was just magical. The guesthouse is located right on one of the most beautiful sandy beaches I’ve ever seen with breathtaking views over the Atlantic Ocean. It’s excellent organic minimalist interior design with a Scandinavian touch brings the outside in to the well sized rooms. Very comfortable mattresses and top quality sheets transported me to the clouds every night. Generous and mostly organic breakfast buffet with home baked bread, fresh made apple juice, eggs, local cheeses and much more gave me the best start every day.

It was not the right season for whale spotting from the terrace, but instead I saw lots of dolphins and a great variety of different sea birds every morning.

I enjoyed the days either reading books on the terrace, sunbathing by the pool or strolling in the sandy dunes surrounded by more fynbos than I knew existed.

The low tide during my late afternoon walks offered a great opportunity to see what’s normally hiding under the surface. The Kelp forest was only meters away and I wish that I would've been brave enough to jump in. Maybe I would have found my own "Octopus Teacher" right there, right then.

The village has a good variety of restaurants and the team at Gonana was very helpful with recommendations and organised tables every evening.

I can’t wait to come back again.

We had a lovely stay at Gonana with highly professional and friendly staff and owner. Very hands on. High quality throughout the Guesthouse. Has an international feel as the owner is from Sweden. Met lovely international guests there. Excellent breakfast and other refreshments available.
The only two recommendations we have are - that "real" towels are given in the bathrooms and that alternative light in the evenings is secured in the bedrooms during load shedding.

Hello Adelle, Thank you for taking the time to leave this review and also letting us know about your experience and preferences. At Gonana we believe in buying local whenever possible, therefore, our towels are all from Barrydale Hand Weavers and we believe that they are of a very high quality having been hand-weaved using ethical and organic textiles. They certainly are different to the 'normal' towels we are all accustomed to, but we are sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy them. Thank you for providing us with input on the alternative light in the bedrooms we will look into this as a back-up as our solar-panels are working again, making us interruption-free. We really hope that we can welcome you back soon :) Thanks again for your review!

A warm and welcoming place located right on the beach. The great room/kitchen opens to a deck that faces the ocean and leads you to the beach. Beautiful light throughout the day and feels like indoor/outdoor living. The hosts are lovely and very hospitable. I stayed with a group of friends, five in all, and it felt like we were visiting friends of friends. I bought a couple of tea towels, made locally, to take home as a souvenir. Also divine.

We were pleasantly surprised by the layout of the home each of the 3 bedrooms had a full bathroom. The cleanliness was impressive but most of all, the crockery, cutlery and utensils is of very high quality. There were a few basic groceries(milk, coffee, tea, salt, pepper, oil) item for consumption at no additional cost including dishwasher tablets. Daily friendly cleaning service made our holiday easier. The price we paid for the 5 nights was a pleasant surprise.

My daughter and I spent a lovely few nights at this lovely gem of a stylish Guest house. We were warmly welcomed by Thandi who recommended great places for dinner and settled us in to 2 lovely rooms. My daughters overlooked the ocean and mine the pool. Both rooms beautifully appointed with simple , modern and upmarket finishes. The house is run off the grid with a deep respect for nature and the surroundings. The owners have a lot of experience in both hospitality and interior design and combine their skills to make this into a really stylish yet environmentally friendly wonderful place to ease down and just appreciate the beautiful surroundings.
The breakfast cooked and prepared by Thandi and Martine was delicious and we had no need for lunch.
The house is situated on a beautiful small bay on the edge of the nature reserve so perfect for a stroll and easy to walk to the harbour and busier part of town.
I almost didn’t want to write this review as I wanted to keep this gem to myself but that just wouldn’t be fair on this absolutely delightful place. We will definitely be back and anyone contemplating where to stay should definitely go to Gonana.
