I have stayed at this hotel a few times and always impressed with the service provided. The surroundings are beautiful and tranquil. If you are looking for a quiet break with a good book to read by the well kept pool or a hiking/trail adventure in the wilderness then this is your place.

We stayed here at the end of October during a golf trip around the Eastern Cape. The hotel is unpretentious and in excellent condition and rooms are surprisingly spacious and modern, many of them back on to the golf course.

Unlike the previous reviewer we were lucky enought to do a game drive in Shamwari the day before which was a fantastic experience. Bushman Sands and Shamwari are owned by the same group - Mantis Collection.

Staff at Bushman Sands were extremely friendly from the reception to restuarant and the golf shop. There is also a small spa but we didn't have the chance to use it. The golf course itself is in great condition despite only being fully opened for less than 2 years. Take a cart though, its a long walk!

You can also do game drives and boat cruises close to the hotel - hopefully we wil get the time to do this next time round.

Overall very good and clean, rooms were well serviced on a regular basis. Reception was friendly and directions to the point. Boardroom was well equipped and snacks and drinks were of high standard. Food and drinks served were also of high standard and prepared well with positive attitude. We will keep on returning for functions as we only had good experience - well done to the team!!

Stopped for breakfast. Ordered "Eggs Benedict with ham". It actually came with a reasonable impersonation of hollandaise sauce, but was served on POLONY not ham, with dry shop bought toast. My wife had a fry up which was slightly better but all items were covered in crispy black bits suggesting the oil was old.

They had filter coffee in a plunger. As I pushed the plunger down the coffee jumped out and burned me - totally my fault but - the waitress watched the whole thing and then just looked at me like "what must I do?". She wasn't really bothered about her job in the least.

Breakfast is served in the bar. It smells damp and decorated like its the 80s.

Overall experience was just depressing.

The staff went over and beyond to make my family and me feel comfortable. We thought we may be bored in the middle of nowhere, but whether it was taking golf-cart rides, playing in the games room, swimming or having a braai - we always had something to do. The location is peaceful and surrounded by beautiful greenery. We loved that we could walk everywhere and in the evening, we were able to recuperate in the most indulgent bath, followed by dinner at the pub and then movies back in our room. All the basics are available to you, greeted with friendly faces and an overall enjoyable stay - if you're staying, having a chocolate milkshake! They're great!

Great value for money four star hotel - very newly renovated (was a school apparently) so in need of a bit of soul, but plain honest food and excellent rooms with functioning airconditioning.
Golf course out back is in excellent condition - evidently hardly used as we only saw three golfers in three days! - and it was apparently designed by Gary Player.

Staff all local and evidently trying very hard to please.

Now the good news and bad news - the hotel is part of the group that owns Shamwari - the most expensive private game reserve in Africa - but the good news is that as a guest at Bushman Sands you can book to go on a game drive at Shamwari for R750 per person - at least in theory.

The bad news is that someone "forgot" ours and another couples' bookings - no doubt we were "bounced" by some VIPs and it caused us to waste a day - waiting for a ranger not to turn up until it was too late to arrange anything else - for our last day !

So we would recommend not to rely on the hotel arrangements and plan to spend time at Addo Elephant park as a back up plan.

Nice peaceful and quiet place to get away from all the hustle and bustle of the city. Rooms were unexpectedly very large and spacious and the little veranda just outside was perfect for sundowners!!! The food at the bunker pub is fairly priced and is quite excellent!! Was a bit worried that it wouldn't be good but it impressed beyond expectation!! Alicedale is a very small quiet little town but if one is looking to spend some quiet time, Bushman Sands is the perfect place to go!!

It should be said that this is the second time that I have visited Bushman Sands. My husband and I do quite a bit of travelling with our kids, never visiting a place more than once. But we made an exception as we were so happy after our first visit and I had intended on writing a full feature for my blog. The facilities itself is amazing - great location, beautifully maintained, the staff are welcoming and the restaurant offers some of the best tasting meals at ridiculously good prices - seriously, your restaurant is darn good. However, you can't ignore that it feels like the resort has shifted their focus and that hotel residents are not valued or made to feel important, while the campus students are their primary focus. Being woken up on Monday to loudspeakers, music, shouting and screaming wasn't the typical expectation from a holiday resort, the pool is always littered with students shouting, lying around and playing loud music making the facilities seem unwelcoming and unaccommodating. The golf course no longer has golf carts, and you are not able to braai at your room which is a bit of an inconvenience if you have young kids as the grounds are covered in thorns, so if you braai at the main restaurant you're constantly pulling thorns out of your kid's hands, clothes and shoes. The decor overall is aged, the guest shop has been relocated but signs don't make that clear, the new shop has operating hours on the door but aren't adhered to. Overall, the staff, facilities and grounds are amazing - I can't recommend it enough, it's just a pity that paying guests aren't prioritized and that the hotel part of the facility seems to have been forgotten.

If you want somewhere to relax, be shut away from the world with absolute peace and quiet.. then this is the place. We spent 3 nights here as a base for some game drives and it was lovely.. it is off the beaten track in a town that looks like time has forgotten it BUT that's what makes this place so unique. I have to be honest and say that it's a little "rustic", it could do with a lick of paint.. the rooms are so spacious, even the bathroom has it's own 4 rooms - lovely balcony overlooking the mountains... the staff are wonderful, very welcoming and friendly. Especially Wakkie (I do hope I've spelt that right!!) Who looked after us in the bar and restaurant. Food is very cheap, simple and limited but cooked well and served with pride. All in all, don't overlook this gem and look beyond it's rustic look - it's got a lot of soul to offer... thank you for a wonderful few days...

A nice hotel that is unfortunately a bit run down, however, fine if you want to stay over in Alicedale for a game of golf. The rooms are spacious, well appointed and generally clean. However, do not expect great food, or enhanced services.
