Just returned from a 5 night stay, which was predominantly for fishing for Tiger Fish.
The Lodge is under new ownership, having stayed here before its quite obvious that a lot of time and effort has been put into upgrading and improving all the facilities.
The new owners , and manager Gavin are clearly also concentrating on the level of service and hospitality, and this could not be faulted at all.
Amongst the improvements is the availability of food in the restaurant , and a big that you to Mariluise, who served us some lovely food when required.
All the staff and owners were extremely friendly and helpful, and all are a mine of information and help about local affairs and places to go.
The biggest upgrades were the fishing charters which are now run directly by the Lodge. Their fishing areas from the bank are all well kept and maintained. They have a new launch area for the charter boat, and this area includes a club house ,which is also wonderful for shade and food at lunchtime(which can be provided by the lodge).
The new fishing guide Ross is a gem! Polite, friendly and knowledgeable, and most importantly good at his job.
Everyone at Riverhill made us extremely welcome.
Thanks for a fantastic stay.

I purposely chose this Lodge as it offers stunning views and I wasn’t disappointed.

Our host, Richard, was warm and welcoming.

The lodging was spacious and clean. We actually considered cancelling our Lower Sabie accommodation to use the lodge as our launch site to Kruger. (Discovered that our cancellation fees at Lower Sabie were 100% so canned that idea. Good thought for next time, though.)

Once settled it’s just a short drive into town to pick up supplies or find a restaurant.

The view north from the bar to the Komati River was superb, complimented by pleasant conversation with Richard.

The Lodge is about 10 kms from the Kruger gate.

What a little gem of a place! Unexpectedly beautiful with incredible service & the most breathtaking views over the Komati river. Rooms are far more luxurious than the photos on the website, a pleasant surprise. Although we’d love to try the self-catering chalets next time it was so nice being served such delicious food at the small & intimate restaurant. Would absolutely recommend staying here!

We had a family vacation at River Hill Lodge over the last school holiday, we chose this lodge for its location to the Kruger Park. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful at all times, the restaurant serves amazing food. The bar has a view that is mesmerizing and you can certainly get lost into another world while sipping on a cold beer. We were lucky enough while at the bar to come across a herd of elephant in the river bed that we sat watching for hours until they moved on. The rooms are very comfortable with Aircon, which was greatly enjoyed as it was very warm in the afternoon.
We can’t wait to return.

We travelled from JHB with a car full of stuff and arrived at The River Hill Lodge, at approximately 19:30 (it was dark), Only to receive the RUDEST welcome from the owner. His wife didn't even greet us. He's tone totally changed when he discovered that our boss had an AFRIKAANS surname (go figure) He basically told us to "drive into town and fins a hotel!" Being in the hospitality industry for over 8 years, I've never ever been treated like that and wouldn't wish it upon anyone! Needless to stay, we were welcomed down the road by an amazing lodge, villa candelabra, where other people there confessed to hearing about and experiencing the RUDENESS of the manager at River Hill. You should be ashamed of yourself!!!!

Response from Richard B, Owner at River Hill Lodge
Responded 17 Oct 2015
It is always regrettable when anyone is mistreated anywhere, especially, in the hospetablity industry. We are truly suprised that such a situation has occurred. Unfortunately, we cannot comment as we have no recollection of the incident. The owner would not have been present to receive the offended party as at the time in question he would have been running the Bar. There are numerous establishments in the area with the word "River " in the title which does often lead to guesst mistaking one establishments for another.

I'm very disappointed. I have not even visited this lodge yet. I phoned on saterday and and asked to send me a quote for a few days away in Dec or in Jan. Dec they were busy and I gave the gentleman dates for January as I wanted to book there for my birthday. They had days available and he said he would email me shortly after we end the call. It is Wednesday evening and I have still not received anything. Iv been checking my spam and all and been trying to call and no one answers. Iv called a total of 3 times and no answer. For this reason iv gone and booked at a lodge that got back to me and wants to do business. If this is how the service is befor even confirming a booking I can only imagen the service we would have received at this lodge. We have been fortunate enough to experience all sorts of lodges from budget entry level to 5 star. It's a pitty. But from this out come I would already no recommend this lodge as they do not even contact a potential client.

If you want a 5star hotel go and pay for one! The accomodation here had everything to make our stay more than comfortable for the week.
Great location, overlooking the river & only 12km to Kruger Nat park & 5 mins from town.
Hosts were excellent & couldn't do enough to help our every need, from advising game tours in Kruger & local fishing guides, & local restaurants.
Would recommend, & love to go back!!
Thanks Richard.

From 2007 to 2009, while living in Mozambique, I spent several weekends and Holidays at the River Hill. In 2018 I went back to Africa and again spent a weekend there. I was not a bit disappointed as the place is as good as ever. This rustic, beautiful lodge is conveniently located halfway between the Mozambique border and the Kruger Crocodile Bridge Gate. The owners are special people who make you feel at home and try and attend to all your needs. It's a self-catering lodge but you can order yummy breakfast with advance notice. They offer two-to-six-people chalets equipped with most that one needs for a comfortable stay. A lovely braai (barbecue) area is available to guests. Nature is all around you, from the bar facing the Kruger Park to the large green areas that separate the chalets. One may get a chance to see crocodiles, hippos and sometimes elephants from both the bar and the pool area. The location is safe and one can easily get dinner in Komatipoort. The owners will be glad to make reservations for you. In sum, this is one of my favorite places in the world. Rich, Michele and Carryll, we'll be back!!!!!

The lodge is really well looked after, clean and spacious. The view was amazing with the river running so strong. The kids enjoyed the beautiful pool and the safe grounds after being cooped up in the car.

Great hosts, Richard and Michelle are the most helpful hosts you could ask for. Nothing is too trouble and so much local knowledge to help you plan your vacation. Accomadation is ideal, plenty of space in the 3 bedroom chalet with kitchette and lounge. Great facilities, great hosts, great location into Kruger national park at great value! Highly recommend anyone coming to visit this area.
