Explore, discover and enjoy a unique taste of rural Africa! Coffee Shack is a backpackers' tropical paradise, located on the beach at the Bomvu River mouth on the Wild Coast of South Africa, where you will experience a way of life far removed from Western culture. We have a reputation of being a fun, good-value hostel with excellent facilities and the most amazing, friendly staff. We offer accommodation in traditional, thatched-roof huts, ranging from private rooms to dorms, as well as camping facilities in the garden next to the beach. Choose between self-catering options or try our delicious meals with a free 'potjie' meal every Sunday night. Weather and ocean permitting, join us for daily sundowners with magnificent views or taste freshly caught oysters and mussels at the bar before dinner. Stay for five nights and get your 5th night free! Our 'Babalaza Bar' is fully licensed and rocks in the evenings with its free pool table and range of drinks and cocktails. Join in the Killer Pool game or enjoy the chilled-out atmosphere around the firepit. Our variety of day trips include cultural walks exploring the local Xhosa culture, a traditional evening of dance and song at the home of a local family where you can try traditional Xhosa food and beers, beach days on the beautiful Coffee Bay, surf lessons, exploring Mapuzi cliffs and caves, hiking to the legendary "Hole in the Wall" or just walking in the local countryside with one of the local guides. We are accredited by Fair Trade Tourism South Africa and are committed to the improvement and upliftment of the greater community through various education and support projects. We are dedicated to making a difference to the local community and are thus 30% owned by the local Tshezi Community, who receive direct financial benefits from being involved in the business. We aim to encourage growth and empowerment opportunities for the local community through the development of meaningful partnerships. Coffee Shack runs a daily shuttle to Mthatha to meet the Baz Bus and other mainline buses at the Shell Ultra City in Mthatha (Umtata). We have free WIFI, safe parking and a laundry service. For self-drive, we are located in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, in the former Transkei area. Turn onto the Coffee Bay road approximately 20km south of Mthatha, continue 80km down to the coast.

Coffee Shack is one of our favorite stops on the Wild Coast. The backpackers is situated on the Bomvu river with giant red milkwoods hanging over the campsite and waters edge. The vibe is friendly and surfer orientated. This is by far the cheapest place to book a surf lesson in

Hi Robbie, You are welcome to send us an email to Coffee Shack email address (sorry Tripadvisor will not allow us to write it online in this message - go the our website for the address) with the details of your party and we can see what is available, please address the email to me. However at that time of year, it is very hard to accommodate 1 night bookings, especially if you are with a biggish group. If we are unable to assist, then we can try and recommend alternatives in the area. Cheers Belinda & the Coffee Shack crew

Howzit Vix The road is tarred (sealed) the whole way from the N2 down to Coffee Bay, there is only about 600m of gravel road to Coffee Shack. Most of our guests have the smallest hire cars available and have no problems. With the recent rains a few big pot holes have formed on the last 35km of the road to Coffee Bay, just drive slowly, so you can see them and avoid them and you will be fine. We always advise that you try driving during day light hours as there is lots of livestock (animals) crossing the roads. They are currently tarring the last 600m to Coffee Shack, and the associated road works may cause disruptions. We also advise particularly if you are coming from the Durban side (North), that you do not use a GPS, just follow these easy directions. From Durban, take the N2 until you are about 20km passed Mthatha, in the direction of East London. Keep an eye out for the Coffee Bay/Mqanduli exit, it is then 80km down to Coffee Bay. If coming from East London side, then just look for the exit 20km before you get to Mthatha. If you have any more questions, just ask, travel safely and see you soon. Cheers David & the Coffee Shack crew

Howzit Amanda, I hope that you are well? Great to hear that you will be coming to stay with us at Coffee Shack. To be honest it is pretty hard to give you a direct yes/no answer to some of your questions, because obviously “one persons meat is another’s poison”. We do not get complaints very often about food being taken from the self-catering kitchens, but I would obviously be lying if I said it never happened. Having said that things are generally pretty safe. Alternatively, our meals are very well priced, and decent quality, dinner is a 2 course meal for only R70 currently. If you would like a real authentic experience, consider spending a night in the village with Elvin and his family, and experience traditional rural Xhosa culture. See our website for more details. I hope that helps, it is easier if you email us directly, rather than through Trip Advisor, because internet connections in Coffee Bay are not the best. Safe travels and see you at Coffee Shack. Cheers David & the Coffee Shack crew

Hi there! The road isn't a regular one, but its pretty reasonable. Perhaps the final kilometer could be slightly tough but doable. They have wifi so you're set for Skype, don't expect the best connection tough, one should not come to the coffee shack to go Skype and use the internet. They have an organized trip for hole in the wall, which takes you a few hours (2-3 hours, to be honest I didn't check the time once that day and you shouldn't). When you get there they will provide you with food and get you back by car.
