Detailed Reviews
My two teenage sons and I had a wonderful time at Moorcroft Manor. The hosts and the entire team were incredibly friendly, making our stay unforgettable with their suggestions for activities in the area. The hotel grounds and rooms are beautifully decorated with great attention to detail, and the service and cleanliness were excellent. The restaurant offers a fantastic selection of homemade dishes, from breakfast to light meals during the day, all the way to delightful dinners in the evening.
A visit to the on-site Day Spa left nothing to be desired. We hope to return soon!

My wife and I stayed one night at Moorcroft Manor on 28 January 2024.
Having been there previously we knew what to expect, and we were not disappointed.
Their standard remains high in all areas including both breakfast and dinner.

Moorcroft Manor gives you that country style, home from home feel. The owners dine in the same venue and nonchalantly mingle without imposing. The staff are attentive and extremely courteous.
The suites are spacious with separate en-suite, lounge, book selection, coffee station, underfloor heating etc.

A mixed review following our experience. On the positive side, the rooms were very well equipped and spacious, however it was noted that on arrival the vase of flowers that were in the room were completely dead and should have been replaced prior to new guests' arrival. The dinner and breakfast that we had were both very good and we cannot fault the chef and kitchen staff at all. Our main concern was the quality of the bed mattrass - this was so soft and completely collapsed under any weight and thus sleep was nigh impossible. We eventually resorted to sleeping on the floor as despite being hard at least provided some support to ones' back. We did report this to management (Clement) the following morning thus I trust that this has been resolved and that new mattresses have been purchased. Hence, overall for the price paid per night I do not believe we received value given our experience in Room 7.

Thank you for your review. It is unfortunate that you did not let us know straight away that you found the bed soft because we have equipped some of our rooms with firmer mattresses.

We stayed here before under the previous ownership. Basically the accommodation is good but the service, especially in the dining room was poor. It took us over 30 minutes to be seated for dinner, despite arriving on time, and the meal, chosen from a very restricted menu, was very slow to arrive, taking over two hours in total. Breakfast was also a bit of a do-it yourself affair. We recommend removing all the surplus cushions from the bed and providing a proper set of bed linen - not just a top sheet and a reused duvet cover. Also investing in staff training would not go amiss.

We hear with regret about your finding yourself restricted by our menu that offers only a choice of 8 starters, 18 main courses and 6 desserts. The surplus cushions on every bed are imposed on us by the South African Hotel Grading Society and we shall be glad to forward to them your negative opinion about their requirement. We also follow their rules in regard to the bed linen which consists for every bed of a freshly laundered mattress protector, fitted bed sheet, top sheet and duvet with freshly laundered cover, all of the requisite quality/thread count with additional blankets available in every room. Sticking a bit closer to fact would certainly not go amiss.

2 friends and myself spent 3 days over Christmas at this delightful hotel. The surroundings are stunning, and there is a sense of absolute peace everywhere. The rooms were excellent, with everything one could wish for - slippers, gown, sherry, a fridge etc. We had Christmas lunch which was excellent, and such great value. Each table was delightfully decorated, and each table received platters with the full Christmas menu on it. We had our leftovers for dinner, which the kitchen kept for us. The personal service from the owners was amazing - Goolu went out of her way to make it very special for me, liaised with my daughter in Hong Kong for extras in our rooms, and she even gave a beautiful lemon cake to my friends for their anniversary, compliments of the hotel. The staff were lovely as well. I highly recommend this hotel, and hope to return soon.

We stayed at the Moorcroft for 2 nights. It is a beautiful big house, with very nice rooms. We stayed at the honeymoon suite. This was really a huge room with a terras with acces to the garden and pool. The room was equipped with a "coffee and thee"-bar. There was also a small bottle of sherry available which got refilled every day. Dinner was really good at the evening. We really enjoyed the good cooking and nice wines. At breakfast you can order some eggs and there is also a buffet with fresh fruit, cheese, meat and yogurt.
The views and surroundings outside are overwhelming beautiful. We enjoyed to watch the sunsets at the evening, so beautiful when the sun goes down behind the Drakensbergen.
We organized a private trip to the Sanipass into Lesotho which is a great experience. The drive goes over gravel roads to the top where you find the border with Lesotho. Fantastic to do, so beautiful nature.
We really enjoyed our stay.

We stayed three nights and ate in house on two of those nights. Hotel is about 5 minutes drive from nearest restaurants and 10 minutes from town of Underberg. Great location for Sani Pass tour that we did with excellent Major Adventures and they scooped us up enroute. We booked a Junior Suite which was most comfortable. The rooms all have views across the beautiful gardens and lake to the Drakensberg and Sani Pass. The lake is a wonderful venue for a stroll and bird spotting. All the team very friendly and helpful and breakfast and dinner very very good. The one thing I have to mention is the impact of other guests during our stay. The hotel was accommodating border guards that started their shift around 5;30am without consideration for other guests during their noisy departure, little the hotel could do, just an unfortunate coincidence although we did manage to get back to sleep!

Arrived to a rather cold reception and was looking forward to a warm cozy room … suprise, the room was very cold with no aircon or heater or electric blanket. This was mid winter!! Went to reception and Clement said there was underfloor heating…. He came and shifted the bed away to plugin the underfloor heating… we went for supper and hoping for a warmer room on return…. No luck it was still bitterly cold. The receptionist eventually gave us his little fan heater for the night.

We agree that it can get very cold in winter and that is why we heat the rooms when we have advance bookings. With the present power supply situation it is not possible to heat unoccupied rooms. We apologise for the fact that it takes time for a room to be heated when guests arrive at short notice. We do not use electric blankets for hygienic reasons.

Sadly, I only had a one night stay at this lovely property. The owner, Goolu, was an absolute delight and could not have made me feel more welcome. The staff was welcoming, warm, and professional, they could not have done enough to accommodate. I loved the large room, which included many extras that most properties do not consider for their guests. The food was wonderful and top rate. If I am fortunate enough to be in the area once again, I will definitely stay at Moorcroft Manor. Lastly, I loved my time with Sugar!!!!

Johannesburg, South Africa72 contributions29 helpful votesHello there!
I have been wanting to come stay at the Moorcroft Manor for years and will definitely be making s plan this year.
What is the best time of year to visit?
I see you are pet friendly? Seriously? My dogs travel with me all the time and glad to hear about this! Do you have different rooms allocated for guest with dogs?
Kindest Regards
Lourens Gary Moorcroft
Thank you for your enquiry.
The best time of year to visit depends on what kind of weather you like .
Autumn is beautiful, winter is also nice, we have underfloor heating and fireplaces in the lounge and dining room.
We do allow pets but not in the dining room and lounge.
Look forward to your stay with us.
