A warm friendly welcome, quick temp check, sign in register completed and hand sanitizing done. Homemade savoury tartlets and fresh muffins recommended which can be enjoyed in the garden under the shade trees. Owners are tourist friendly and make you feel welcome as you enter the building. A R25.00 entrance fee is charged to take the flower route on the farm, this is a must do and take your coffee/tea and refreshments and pull off the road to enjoy it in the veld, surrounded by all colours of the rainbow.

That we have been staying at Papkuilsfontein pretty much every year now for twenty years, is perhaps testament to this wonderful family owned and run farm. The van Wyk family are consummate hosts with an eye for detail that means you will want for nothing. Nothing stays the same except for the vastness of the property and the welcome you will receive. The changes that occur, sometimes not immediately visible are subtle and all designed to ensure their guests have the maximum enjoyment. This year, they have installed an electric gate at the entrance, in order to stop day visitors just driving onto the property. During the flower season of August and September, day visitors were becoming uncontrollable, so now, the guests staying have their privacy back. There are several, very discreetly signed cycle trails and you can walk all day on the property without being disturbed. But you should not just consider a visit during the flower season. At any time of the year, Papkuilsfontein will work its magic. It is a place of extraordinary peace and beauty. When we first visited there was no restaurant. It was a falling down barn, which has been restored and provides meals now only for the residents, though you can of course, by prior arrangement and agreement, book a wedding or function there too. Our dinner there this visit was utterly outstanding, made all the more astonishing when you consider it is a 200 kms round trip to buy provisions in Vredendal and they have no mains, grid electricity; they generate their own, which currently is a great deal more reliable than the country's grid supplier, Eskom.

We visited after looking at the flowers at a farm next to them, and decided to skip lunch at that venue as the atmosphere felt like they were just hurrying us through.
What a great surprise to find a different attitude at Papkuilsfontein, with all covid protocols cleverly observed, while serving us exceptional food outside . We had a cauliflower soup, butter curry chicken, cheescake and coffee, and everything could have been served at a great restaurant, not to mention the reasonable prices. We left with some extra goodies to enjoy on our road trip the next day. They also offer fantastic takeaway boxes with picnic lunch which can be pre ordered.
They offered two clearly marked flower routes , which we enjoyed, and some of our favorite pics where taken at the restful spot next to the windmill. Should we be back to Namaqualand for the flower season, Papkuilsfontein would not be negotiable, we loved it there!

This is THE spot to see wonderful flowers. Papkuils farm is unique with great walking, cycling areas as well the array of bulbs spreading out on the horizon like a sea.
The Sinkhuis is a rare treat of a period gone by, beautifully furnished with all needs met.
Mariette and Willem are gracious hosts and very helpful.
The dinner which was delivered during Covid time was a little expensive. Otherwise all very good. Can't wait to return.

Papkuilsfontein is a gem! We stopped off on the way back from hiking the Fish River canyon and it turned out to be the highlight of our trip. Originally intending to hire a cottage, they were all booked up so we camped instead. The campsite is about 3km from the main farmhouse and we loved the quiet and the birdlife. The campsite is on a slight hill so we had stunning views out to the east, warm showers and kitchen facilities in a rustic but tastefully done way. We hiked down to the Kloof and sat eating lunch in a cave and looked up to discover rock art. Dinner with a roaring fire in the dinning room with the farmer and his wife's warm hospitality was really special. The cottages are close to the start of the hiking trail and are private and beautifully situated. The farm has been in the same family for many generations and I wish them continued success!

We spent 2 nights at this wonderful guest farm.
Everything was superb.
The accommodation was very comfortable with everything you need for self catering. They are off the grid so no electricity, only gas. So, no air con when it’s very hot.
They had an indoor braai area as well as outdoors. We stayed in DeHoop which had its own private pool and the “ dam” pool was a short walk away.
The staff were so friendly and nothing was too much trouble. We ordered dinner on one of the nights which was out of this world and soooo much food! They delivered the food to our accommodation, layed the table and explained all the dishes to us. We even had candles - a banquet.
They have a small assortment of homemade jams, biscuits, chutneys etc which are very reasonably priced.
There are numerous walks or cycle tracks you can go on which are all very clearly marked out.
It’s a beautiful location and would love to go back when the wild flowers are in full bloom - it must look spectacular.
This is a hidden gem

We stayed at Papkuilsfontein Guest Farm as a base to see the Spring flowers in the NW Cape. We stayed in De Hoop cottage on the farm and it was the most wonderfully tranquil place to stay - spotlessly clean, very comfortable and utterly charming complete with outside shower. They have thought of everything you could wish for to self cater - but don't!!! You would be missing out on the utterly delicious home cooked dinners served with pride and care, piping hot delivered to your cottage.
Breakfasts at the main house were equally delicious. This is gourmet farm fare.
Everybody was so welcoming and friendly and took pride in all that they did. I can't praise the owners and staff enough. Thank you for a truly wonderful stay.

A spur of the moment road trip to the Northern Cape to view the March lilies led us to stay at Papkuilsfontein, which was delightful. We stayed in a beautifully renovated house on Matjiesfontein, which had simple, yet tasteful and luxurious accommodation, with beautiful antiques. the surround landscape was pure Karoo - wide vistas, windmills, sheep and whitewashed homesteads. We chose to have the catered dinner and enjoyed the best lambshank I have ever eaten! We also went across to Oorlogskloof - a spectacular gorge on Papkuilsfontein, which is well worth the hike. Our hosts were wonderfully welcoming and enriched our experience with stories of the people and the history of the place. Such a lovely visit - we will be back soon,

We went here duting flower season. It was absolutely stunning. We couldn't get enough of all the amazing view, from all the different flower routes to the water fall and canyon to amazing sunsets. Accommodation was fantastic. Our favourite part was the home cooked dinners that they deliver to your house. The food was out of this world, proper tasty, home cooked, feel good slow food. The breakfast was the best breakfast I've ever had. A must visist during flower season. We will definitely be back

A magical place to stay in a charmed spot. We stayed in one of the historic Matjiesfontein houses which has been beautifully restored and furnished, inside one of the richest flower areas. The rooms had every comfort one could want. The food was superb, imaginative and beautifully presented, the memorable item being the lamb from the owner's farm, which had been feeding on the aromatic Karoo shrubs, and so had the most extraordinary flavour. The sky at night (it was moonless) was magnificent, even better than at Sutherland. You need to book early.
