We visit Ghana regularly and Planters Lodge is a place we look forward to staying at when in Takoradi. The rooms are a nice size, the food is good (although seriously over-priced), the garden is immaculate and beautiful and the staff are friendly enough. Their internet is free of charge and consistent. It has a beautiful pool area which is lovely to relax at after a long, hot day. There is ample free parking and one feels safe in the hotel, which has a very colonial feel to it. Sure its pricier than some of the other accomodation available in the area, but we believe it is worth it and for that reason we keep coming back. If you have a problem, let the management know, and they will see to it - pronto! They have put alot of effort into training their staff over the last year and it shows - more attentive and customer-focused service - and not the usual "I don't care" attitude that one sometimes experiences while travelling in Africa. Its a lovely hotel on a beautiful spot. I just hope they don't keep hiking their prices up and price themselves out of the market due to the current mining boom - that would be a shame.

I have now twice stayed at this gem of a hotel. It is an old colonial housing compound, set in large grounds on the slope of a hill, that has been converted into a hotel.

The rooms are very attractive and comfortable - you will be pleasantly surprised as one does not often come across this standard of accommodation in Africa. The rooms (bungalows) are spread across the property, are immaculately clean and offers views of the Indian Ocean in the distance.

The hotel has a lovely swimming pool and serve meals in a restaurant next to the pool. After a day in the tropical heat of Takoradi, a swim, a beer and a good dinner in this lovely setting is just a perfect ending to the day.

Takoradi is not a destination many foreigners frequent, but if you do, try Planters - you won't be disappointed.

I hadn't stayed here since 2006 and it has definitely improved. Food is good at the small resteruant near the pool. You need to ask for one of the four nice rooms above the hotel reception as the other rooms are of a much lower standard. The woman that is charge was a bit rude to begin with but nearer the end of our stay she seemed to be a bit happier. The hotel is full of oil and gas guys which is not a problem and there is really good security at the enterance of the hotel which prevents the local ladies from entering the hotel grounds. All in all I would recommend the Planters Lodge in Takoradi even with the moody hotel manageress!

we had an argument with Devie the owner over building works waking us up early, she must be Ghana's rudest person to both her staff and paying customers.
Only recommend if the owners away. check first you have been warned.

I stayed at Planter's Lodge for 10 days in the summer. I had high hopes for this place, but this was soon quashed when I discovered that neither the WiFi or bedroom AC were working. Reception staff were unhelpful, but eventually I managed to switch rooms after being left waiting in the 'lobby' for an hour. The WiFi was intermittent at best and not suitable for business purposes. The food is generally ok, but service can be slow despite lots of staff seemingly being available. The Garden bedrooms and Executive rooms are pretty small and only have very high level windows. One redeeming feature is that the lodges surroundings are nicely landscaped and the pool is magnificent. Based on my experience the only aspect of Planter's Lodge that is luxurious is the price tag. To top it off I was overcharged by several hundred dollars and, despite a promise upon check out, I still have not been refunded. Numerous emails have been sent to chase this up, but no reply has been received. Extremely poor customer service!

On Saturday 28th December we took some friends to dine at planter's as we'd always had such memorable times there whenever we visited Takoradi. We were 4 adults and two children. We arrived for an early dinner at 6:30pm. We chose to sit outside. The waiter came and recommended a cocktail which my friend accepted. Five minutes later he was back. They didn't have all the ingredients to make aforementioned cocktail. So why did he recommend it in the first place? If we'd known how things were going to proceed after that we would have left there and then.... But alas..

We ordered some starters and main courses. We were shown a bell to ring if we needed anything. Yes the bell worked but no-one ever came. The starters arrived.. fish soup if I remember. It was good.

Meantime a group of young people had arrived. We were the only customers in the place which also should have given us an indication that something wasn't right given it was the Saturday between Christmas and New year. This group were known to the only other staff member. They'd brought their own drinks and he was happy to bring them glasses and to sit and socialise with them.

Back to us. Our food never came.... We rang and rang and eventually I headed inside. No one around. I knocked on the kitchen door and was told food was coming. This was now two hours after our arrival. Three hours came by.. we'd rang for more drinks but no one came. Another trip to the kitchen where we were tearfully told there was only one cook and she was struggling. Oh yes she struggled so much that we got fish that was raw in the middle, our sons' chicken was hot on the outside but stone cold in the centre... As for my steak it didn't come. After 3 and a half wasted hours we had had enough.. patience is a virtue but they were pushing it. We went again to the kitchen and the guy took another ten minutes preparing the bill... Yes, really. We said we would only pay for what we could eat. At this point both he and the young cook were literally begging us and even... Wait for this... Offered to re-cook all the food PROPERLY and pack it for us.

We obviously declined and retreated back to our hotel and ordered room service.

Lord only knows how they would have dealt with more than one table. How will they cope when the extra rooms are available?

What was once a jewel in Takoradi's crown is sadly no more.

We felt STUPID having told our friends it was fabulous... Luckily they saw the funny side of it.

Only as we are in Ghana did we pay 60% of the bill. Believe me if we'd been back in the UK they wouldn't have received a penny.

This place combines the important things for me on a business stay. Good internet, spacious room, and some quiet space. You get all of it by staying here. Staff is very helpful and friendly. Food is nice and offers some local dishes that are tasty.

Nice rooms, nice ambiance, REAL high speed Internet, good and tasty foods and REAL fast room service...what else you want? Really impressed. I'm travelling to Takoradi since 2012 and stayed in many hotels like Best Western, Akroma Plaza, Grand Favour and Africa beach resort but found this one is the best among them. My permanent stopover will be at this hotel in future. They only need to work on bed mattress for those who has weak back. The spring beds gave me too much of back pain after 2nd night although they told me to seek for orthopaedic mattress next time but it should be the normal for every room. I have added price range for all viewers to see if that fit your travel budget then you must pay a visit to check. Hope you will like the place.

Please, rate it Yourself!
We arrived for lunch, 26 December. Nice environment; lunch by the pool. Very nice setting.
We ordered Five Cheeseburger, to make it simple and quick...
45 minutes later, have a look on what we received by the picture I took. Just by looking at it, I still wonder where in any other part of the world we can find such disgusting vision.
They said they made a mistake: Uh?!?!
Then they admitted that, while it's not on the menu, this is called a cheese baguette: Uh?!?!
This picture is the one from my daughter. They took mine quickly because there was still this burger cheese plastic sticked inside it. TERRIFYING!!! NEVER AGAIN.
They can be very proud of all these rewards they recieved. It gives a real sense of the value of them.
what a Joke.

Takoradi is home to some of Ghana's biggest oil developments. So many of the contractors live in hotels in-and-around Takoradi.

Planter's is one of these, but I'm not sure how you would get any work dine while living here. The gardens are lush and beautiful, the pool area instantly relaxing, and the restaurant is delicious.

Well worth a visit.
