The hotel is located in a very quiet environment with proximity to the beach side.
It has both outside and inside bar with variety of drinks to choose from.
I took my favorite (sweet red wine) as I shared great moments with my local friends who were showing me around.
Great place to visit and relax.

I stayed here during the official opening last week and had a ball. The hotel is of course new and looks great and is really well appointed with huge plasma screens in the rooms, lovely furniture in the rooms and nicely laid out bathrooms. Also on site is a bar and restaurant which is open to the public and which is called "Champs Sports Bar and Restaurant". This is a branch of the same bar that has been operating in Accra for a long time and is very popular. The food and drink served at this Champs was just as good as that in Accra and again, the whole place looks new and really stunning with huge TV screens everywhere showing all the latest sports. It has rapidly become a really popular venue within Takoradi which is otherwise quite sleepy and is a fun place to chill at night. Try the Karaoke evening on Friday nights, I had a ball. All in all this place offers great value for money and is a really fun place to stay. I particularly think the manager of the place, Gavin, was helpful and kind and made my stay a pleasure. I think he is from Scotland and so he has a good idea of how to serve people and to motivate his team into action. I will definitely stay here again if I can get a room; it seems to be getting full with the guys coming to Takoradi to drill for oil in Ghana's offshore waters.

The rooms are good as are the bathrooms. Certainly above average for Ghana. However, the owner/manager seems out of touch with reality with the prices they try to charge.

When I arrived with my son looking for a twin/double room I was quoted 600 cedis (+/-) $150 per night although I was staying three nights. When I refused to pay that they very quickly came down to $50 per night which is a fair price.

Don't pay more! And be careful when paying your bill because whether due to incompetence or sneakiness they will still try to charge more/

Get a room well away from the bar downstairs. It's a great bar when you're in it but when you're in your room, you don't want it to sound like you're still in the bar.
Undercooked chicken was an issue in there though! Be careful - check it!
Average rooms, basic beds, no water in the mornings, loud. No black out curtains. A/C turns itself off in the middle of the night.
Clean though.

Response from Brian F, General Manager at Stellar Lodge
Responded 01 Jan 2014
Dear Guest I understand your review in regards to the noise level on a Friday night. This should have been explained to you on arrival and then the option to move to an alternative room is available. I am very sorry that this was not done. The chicken issue I will look into but again it is your right to either have it redone or changed for one that is to your liking. If you did not request this then the staff would not have been aware of the problem. When you are next in Takoradi, please give me a call so we can discuss this and I have some proposals to offer you. Regards Brian Freestone 0501265687

I stayed at the Stellar Lodge from 4th March - 19th March 2012. I was doing research for a novel that will be set in Takoradi. I was familiar with Stellar from a visit to Takoradi in July 2011, although I did not stay there at the time. Stellar is a "business hotel" with many foreign guests, some of whom are in the petroleum industry, oil having been discovered in large amounts off Ghana's coast in the Western Region, where Takoradi lies.

THE GOOD:
1) The staff were VERY responsive. They tried to take care of every issue at once, not several hours or a day later.
2) Very pleasant receptionists and cleaning staff, particularly John who makes up a bed crisper than anyone I know.
3) Adjoining restaurant "Champs," which is a sports bar. If you like soccer, then you can get your fill on the widescreen TVs that line the walls and are suspended from the ceiling. The wait staff were all very friendly and accommodating, especially Edward and the rather alluring Princess. The Champs manager, a cool and good-looking guy called Ransford showed great concern when I thought I had left a book behind on one of the tables (I later found it). The food was in general good, although a little heavy on the fried stuff.
4) Nice wide-screen TV in the room.
5) Bathroom was good (with one exception, see below).
6) Lightning speed and well-organized laundry service.
7) Good location near other restaurants, hotels and mini-malls.

THE NOT SO GOOD:
1) Smoking in Champs bar - ugh! This is a deal-breaker for me. A large number of European visitors at this hotel were heavy smokers and would sit at the bar puffing away. Not good. Coming from Los Angeles where smoking in bars and restaurants has been long outlawed, this was pretty well near intolerable.
2) Not a single Ghanaian dish on the menu. That's a shame. If you can have Indian curry, what's wrong with groundnut soup? Why the disdain for Ghanaian foods? Is it to keep Ghanaians away? I don't know the answer to that, but I've heard it suggested that hotels catering to expatriates would like to discourage Ghanaians from staying there.
2) My bathroom had an odd smell - I think it was the drain. Not horrible, but I did have to use a little freshening spray.
3) There were two occasions where there was some kind of water problem and the water came out of the taps brown. This took about 8 hours to resolve - something with the water pump.
4) No pool and no gym! I really like hotels with a gym since it is sometimes hard to find a convenient gym while you're away from home.

So in general, good personnel but flawed physical setup and facilities, inconsiderate of nonsmokers and not sensitive to those who would like to work out during the hotel stay.

Its expensive but as anywhere you pay for what you get, the room was excellent, kettle did not work though, shower and bathroom were excellent so was the massive LCD TV, I would stay again, Champs sports bar is in the property and no noise really bothered my stay. Good all around really. Security is not up to scratch as it is very open on the road side, that bothered me a bit and is the only down side.

Good rates, fair and clean service.
The rooms are clean and wide. There is also a nice swimming pool to be used all the day long.
Only the breakfast service is really minimal.
The small problem is when you stay at the higher floors of the buildings: no elevator service.

Let me start by saying that this was probably the most unexpected experience I have ever had at a hotel, especially after all the positive reviews I saw on TripAdvisor about this Establishment. Perhaps my family and I had an 'Off day' but either way we had an incredibly frustrating and disappointing experience.

On one of our visits to champs for lunch (the adjoining bar/restaurant to the lodge) the manager proposed that he would give us a 'good deal' if we ever wanted to come and stay at the Lodge. We took him up on his offer over the weekend as we headed for a funeral. We booked the executive room because we wanted a large space that could accommodate an extra mattress for our 1.5 year old toddler.

There seemed to have been an error with the communication. We were given the checkout time as the check in time and ended up arriving at 11:00am only to be informed that the room wasn't ready because of an issue with the air conditioner and that check in time is at 2pm. We were however, given the opportunity to move our luggage to the room, which we did, then left for lunch and returned at 1:50pm only to hear that the AC was still being worked on. At 2:10pm we were informed that we needed to wait 30 more minutes till the issue was resolved. Mind you, this whole time my daughter was getting extremely restless and worn out and had to be put down for a nap. Parents out there will understand how stressful it can be dealing with a cranky toddler when you are also quite sleep deprived.

At 2:40pm the manager came and told me that the AC repair men were not being truthful when they said the issue would be resolved in 30 minutes, so we had to continue waiting until they were done. He kindly offered another room to us (a standard, smaller room) which we weren't interested in because that was simply not the type of room we requested for our stay because of the space limitations and comfort we desired. A few minutes after 3pm we finally moved into the room. I requested an additional mattress to be brought in for my daughter and then settled down with my family.

The room itself was very pleasant, spacious and clean (apart from the bathroom). The room had the following facilities:
-Free Wi-Fi
-Air-conditioning
-En suite bathroom with shower (which had dried up soap suds on the tiles and a stained toilet)
-Flat screen TV
-Work desk
-Safe
-Tea and coffee making facilities
-Mini bar fridge

There was no iron and ironing board contrary to what is stated on their website.
After about an hour the mattress still hadn't arrived. I called the reception to remind the lady to have it brought up and then proceeded to check how to 'work' the shower and make sure that the heater was functioning properly. Much to my surprise there was no water coming out of the shower, I figured that I didn't know what I was doing and asked my husband to assist me. Thirty minutes later my husband found out from the reception that the water had been off and that the heater wasn't working. I guess I was supposed to bath my child with the freezing water during harmattan then....?

We had personally had enough, the mattress never arrived as well and we decided to move to another more stable hotel we can always rely on. We were incredibly disappointed especially because we love champs for its consistency with the quality/taste of the food and had read so many positive reviews about the lodge.

I wouldn't discourage anyone from staying at Stellar Lodge, it’s a decent and pleasant hotel, with one of the most reliable restaurants adjoined to it, however, before giving the lodge a try I advise that upon arrival that you do not pay for your stay before ensuring that all the facilities in the room are functioning and that any other service featured with the room will be delivered. If you are particular about your sleep or travelling with little ones please insist on a room as far as possible from the bar. We were informed at the last minute that we would be disturbed at night by the karaoke that happens on Fridays. It would have been fantastic to have been given that information when booking.

The manager who was initially extremely polite to us hasn't gotten in touch yet to apologize or make up for the inconvenience caused. He wasn’t around when we left so we may just give him the benefit of the doubt. It is in this light that we are currently on the fence about whether we will take a risk and give Stellar Lodge another go again when considering our options for accommodation in Takoradi.
