We stayed at Mequfi Beach Resort for 7 days over December. Our experience was absolutely fantastic. We are a family of 2 adults and a teenage daughter and teenage son.
From the moment we landed at the airport in Pemba, our transfer was already waiting. They did not allow us to assist with loading our luggage and made it clear that we are now on holiday. Our driver was considerate and careful and made sure we arrived at the resort safely and undeterred by the bumpy road. He made sure we had some refreshments on ice, which was very welcome, as it was very hot.
Upon arrival at the resort, we were met my Sumail, one of the managers of the resort. A cold face cloth was provided, and again, it was very welcome. We got a quick tour of the resort and amenities before meeting our luggage in our rooms.
The staff at Mequfi is a real asset, and nothing was too much trouble for them. At the poolside, we were given towels, and later, fresh towels, without asking. Ordering from the bar was made easy by the efficient staff who were concerned if we did not have a glass in our hand.
As for the food, Chef Shibu introduced himself at the first meal, and was around at each meal to get our feedback. Each meal had chicken, pasta, beef/lamb, fresh seafood, vegetables, pizza, a variety of breads and soup. Desserts were also well prepared and a real treat. Whether you are vegetarian, vegan or love meat, you are accommodated at each meal. The waiters are exceptionally well trained and the attention to detail is refreshing.
As for housekeeping, the gentleman who attended to our room basically gave it a spring cleaning every morning. Again, the attention to detail makes our stay so memorable and the small things that are done and attended to, reveals a culture of guest appreciation and pride in the resort.
I was initially concerned that a lodge, so far from the city, could produce a proper holiday but I was pleasantly surprised. I have been to many resorts on various islands, and our Mequfi experience is right up there with the best.
Well done to the management and ALL staff from Mequfi Beach resort. Definitely a 5 star resort and we will definitely be back soon.

A last minute trip to Mequfi in Mozambique turned out to be one of the best holidays taken in years!
After a long flight on LAM and a very early start to our day, we were very glad to have landed in pemba.
Our transfer was promptly waiting for us and the 1 hour drive was as expected on the bumpy dirt road for most of the way.
On arrival at mequfi we were greeted by Sumail and staff and check in went smoothly.
The resort is very remote, small quaint and just what we needed after a buze year.
If you are looking for a place to unwind, very peaceful and picture perfect then Mequfi is the place.
The staff were great always smiling (Ramadhaan/Abbas/ Charlie/Perito/Biaci) and willing to assist. (the only downfall was the wait time If you ordered food/drinks but we did go during peak season so to be expected)
The rooms were beautiful - front row rooms were great, cleanliness, turndown service all fantastic!
Food quality was good (could use more of a variety, especially the desserts).
Watersports centre was great, The staff always doing their best to make sure we had activities to fill our days.
Travelling with a 4 year old it would have been great if the resort had a kiddies centre/jungle gym to keep the small ones buze, however that didn't stop the kids at the resort from having a great time with water activities.
I would definitely recommend mequfi beach resort.Excellent value for money.

Valiant effort from the Diamond team! Enjoyed a 5 day stay - great for family beach getaway. Enough to keep everyone busy for at least 7 days.
Certainly some room for improvement to get back to offering the 5 star experience the resort is renowned for but enough positives for a memorable stay.
Pristine beach and great water sport offerings for the location.
Perfect place to relax and unwind.

I found a true gem in Diamonds Mequfi in the province of Cabo Delgado Mozambique, with an all inclusive package. We went in February 2020, a very quiet time for the resort. The staff welcome was warm and friendly. We literally had the resort to ourselves. The staff were most helpful and made certain that we were looked after well. The room was comfortable but lacked certain mod cons in the room. No USB port ( for phone or computers ) and the TV offerings not great. Most times the reception was not great. Wi Fi in the room can be improved. Location great. The beach was excellent. The hotel offers some beach and sea activities. There was no nightly entertainment during our stay. The staff made up with excellent but slow service. Not withstanding some of the negative comments, the staff were excellent. They made our holiday outstanding. Bathroom fitted with a lovely shower. Lovely beach and sea. Our biggest disappointment was the Hotel Manager. Never smiles and never greets hotel guests. In my years of travelling all over, in my books he ranks as the worst. The chefs, the waiters and room attendants were the best. I would love to return, but hopefully with a new manger. This resort can easily get an overall rating of 5 but, need to make improvements in certain areas. To all those that made our stay wonderful, thank you.

We returned to the Mequfi Beach Resort for the 2nd time in one year. We had such a wonderful reception from the staff that remembered us from the last visit. We felt so special and part of the family. They have a new GM Sandro Pecorelli since our last visit. Our previous visit was great but this time with Sandro even more special. He is very hands on. Abbas also the new F & B manager. Also very hands on. Great changes to the food. Had plenty of rock lobster, calamary, squid, fresh fish and octopus. Meals were very special. Staff just amazing and so friendly and helpful. We had so many high lights. New Years Eve dinner just amazing. A huge surprise our last night Sandro arranged a dinner under the stars. What a special meal with table settings so beautiful and candle lit. We are already planning our next visit in Sept for 10 days. This resort is run by amazing staff. Recommend it highly. Thank you Sandro and Abbas for making our trip so special. Unfortunately too many staff to mention by name.

I was in two minds as to wether I should write this review, simply because I would dearly love to keep Diamonds Mequfi a secret from the world, but the fact that Jose and his team deserve all the recognition they can get won out :-).
We spent 7 wonderful nights at the resort with our boys (14 & 11) in January. Everything was perfect from our personal greeting when we arrived at Pemba airport to the time we took our leave of the resort - truly one of the most relaxing holidays to date.
The trip to and from Pemba was in a 4x4 with very professional and competent drivers. The 4x4 is needed as the resort is definitely off the beaten track, exactly what you want when you break away from the rat-race.
One of the most attractive things about the resort is it's size, it is not overcrowded and many times it felt as though we had the resort to ourselves, unlike many other exclusive (large) resorts. I cannot understate the excellence of the staff without exception, there were too many that looked after us for me to risk naming names and missing anyone, the mantra was "we are here for you" and they were every time.
There may be an impression that the limited number of resturants would lead to one becoming bored with the menu, so far from the truth. Between the live grill, pasta station, soup, salad bar and buffet which was varied and inventive every day, one could not get bored for lack of variety. The chef and his team took time out to come and discuss the options and upcoming menu including the staples you expect at a beach resort including lobster, calamari and of course Mozambiquan prawns aplenty. We opted for the all-inclusive option and it was well worth it, such a pleasure to not have to watch your budget every time you sit down for a meal or a cocktail at the pool bar or beach bar.
The boys loved the pool, cycling down to the beach and spending hours in the very warm sea (28/29 degrees C) splashing in the decent waves, wind carting, learning to surf, kayaking up the river and into the sea - all with highly competent and helpful staff there to guide them and look after them. The missus and I joined in sometimes or sat up at the beach bar relaxing with a drink and our feet in the fine beach sand.
Yes it's hot and yes it's humid but our suites had excellent airconditioning and fans to give us a place to retreat to when we needed a break or just some downtime. But with the sea breeze it was just as good to take a dip in the pool and relax around the pool or playing dominoes, chess, table tennis, etc. at the pool bar. Of course there are mosquitoes but the aircons, mosquito nets, fans, critter repellent are all in place to help protect you. Security is excellent and we never once were concerned about our safety.
For those technophobes and those who get FOMO in a bad way the wireless is decent and there is mobile/cell reception at the resort for the main cellular providers in Mozambique.
We have travelled to many places and stayed at many top rated resorts both beach and themed and I have to say that Diamonds Mequfi stands out from the crowd. Despite wanting to keep it's existence all to myself the resort is highly recommended.
As I know Jose reads all comments on TripAdvisor I would like to once again say a huge Thank You to you and your team for showing us a wonderful time and helping us create some wonderful family memories.

We had a sensational family holiday. 10 days of pure bliss in the the hot Mozambican sun. The resort is superb. The staff stood out always smiling and willing to run around just to make your stay as great as possible. Jay who manages the kids club was a true, energetic young lady whom the kids grew to really adore. And she made our holiday easier. Sergio was ever so helpful esp when we needed a doctor from Pemba who came to the resort. The villas are incredible. New and crystal clean with amazing beds. New colors of sunset every day. We also wanted to mention some incredible staff... Banana, Perito, Felix, Edmilson, Emidio, Saide, Jamal, Austian, Sumesh.

My husband and I are huge "beach people" perennially on a quest for the still to be discovered or the just slightly trampled sandy paradises of the world. But even for us Mozambique was a heck of a long bus ride from Seattle - 15 hours to Dubai with a 20 hour layover followed by a 6.5 hour flight to Dar Es Salaam (Tanzania) with a 2 night layover due to non-daily commuter service to Pemba. By the time we arrived in Pemba we may have been well-rested but we were cranky. But then the Mecufi Diamonds unfurled their red carpet. Outside the airport we were greeted warmly, handed cool towels and bottled water and whisked efficiently away in an air-conditioned car. It says a lot about a resort when they send not only a driver but a English-speaking representative of their hotel - in our case it was Jose Cumbe, a front office manager and he was charming. It has been noted in other reviews that the trip to the resort is over unpaved roads and slow going but this only underscores its remoteness which to us is a major plus.
The property benefits greatly from its top-notch General Manager, Jose, who is seemingly everywhere at all times. He's obviously sweating every detail but he does it with an easy charm and ready smile. The staff is routinely well-trained and overcome any language barriers with huge smiles - sometimes you don't get what you ask for but almost always it's better than what you initially had in mind! The back of the house is every bit as professional as the front of the house - the grounds are immaculate and Jose knows firsthand what a fan I am of their in-house laundry service!
We stayed in a beachfront casita with one bedroom and 2 bathrooms plus a third outdoor shower. My husband later asked why we didn't think of 2 bathrooms when we remodeled our master bedroom - what seemed an unnecessary indulgence upon check-in quickly became a heavily used perq. Our casita included both indoor and outdoor living rooms which we put to good use. The decoration is luxurious and spare all at once. The public areas of the resort are thoughtfully designed and encourage relaxation. The kitchen works overtime to churn out delicious and creative dishes relying heavily on local fish and produce. The chef, Daya and his sous-chef made a point to get to know us and our preferences - my husband's dietary restrictions seemed to be a happy puzzle for them. Again, this is a happy staff and it shows in their every gesture.
At check-in I casually mentioned to Jose that we were celebrating our 25th anniversary. What ensued almost defies description. For several days we were quizzed on every preference under the sun. The morning of our anniversary we returned from breakfast to find "Happy Wedding Anniversary" spelled out on our bed in bougainvillea and plumeria petals. A special dinner was served on our casita terrace complete with a small heart-shaped chocolate cake. A big shout out to Chaide, the restaurant & bar manager, who logged onto the Internet to learn how to make a French 75, our favorite cocktail. We were definitely pampered!
At the time of our visit, the Resort was just about to launch their equestrian activities with a stable of 6 horses to be used for trail rides. I mentioned to Jose that my goal was to overcome a rather irrational fear of horses. He set me up immediately with Sharlene, the stable and riding master, who provided me with 4 private lessons over 4 days. By the 4th day she had me trotting down the beach - no small feat when you consider that the first day she walked me around the training ring holding the horse with a guide rope. I can't say enough good things about her - she was patient and encouraging and pushed me to push myself. Already a 10 star experience I was floored when at check-out I was told there was no charge for the lessons because I was "their Guinea pig" - wished I had ridden all day, every day now.
Another highlight for me was a tour of a nearby village with the activities director, Amir. This involved a half mile walk along the beach followed by a half mile walk through the bush. Amir lives in the village so his perspective added a lot - a visit here will definitely recalibrate your thinking. The conditions may be primitive but civic pride is clearly in evidence - they sweep their dirt streets, no garbage anywhere. The children are well-tended and happy. It was funny because never have I ever felt so popular - I quickly had an entourage of 20+ kids hanging off my arms. It soon became evident that they had an ulterior motive steering me to a small general store where I purchased cookies for them. After that they all scattered proving that kids are kids are kids the whole world over. A suggestion: if you go, pack small gifts in your luggage for the village children - pencils, crayons, paper, hard candies ,etc.
My husband had daily massages and reported the spa services were first rate. There is no gym which is an amenity I would like but readily recognize is probably not a huge priority for other vacationers.
Now about the beach: it is pristine but has huge tides. Some mornings you can walk out almost half a mile, other mornings the surf is crashing just yards away from your casita. At low tide, it is calm and excellent for swimming and you can walk for literally miles. The water is clear and about 80 degrees. Perfect!
The resort is right on the equator and the sun comes up at 5 am and sets at 5 pm. If there was an ability for the resort to go on "island time" adjusting sunrise to 6 am and sunset at 6 pm that would only amplify our enjoyment.
We look forward to returning. Thanks so much Mecufi Diamonds for making our 25th anniversary more memorable than our wedding!

We were originally scheduled to stay at Diamonds for a week in December but airlines conspired against us.
We ended up being there for 10 days---that turned out to be a really good idea as we loved the place. Getting to the resort is a bit of a struggle if, like us, you come from Europe but its worth the effort, We stayed in a Suite close to the Bar and Restaurant which we found very convenient.
The accommodation is very well appointed—huge comfortable bed—three showers (yes 3)
Fully equipped bathroom, spare toilet , Sitting room, 2 large TV’s ,sun deck with beds, chairs and table and a sea view. The cleaning staff were very efficient and came around twice a day.
The bar and restaurant are contained in one building facing the large swimming pool.
Service is excellent at both venues and the staff are universally friendly and the majority speak some English which is useful for those who do not speak Portuguese
We were impressed by the catering—the food is first class and Abbas the restaurant manager
And the wonderful head chef will provide ,literally ,anything you want in the way of food. The steak and lobster is very good indeed.
The beach is long and sandy, the water is clear and warm and the beach bar will get snacks delivered if you cannot be bothered going to the restaurant in the middle of the day. There are Kayaks ,Paddle Boards and Sand yachts for the energetic and plenty of beach towels are available.
The resort is built on a very extensive network of dunes and is quite spread out which may be problematic for those with mobility issues but there are golf carts on call at any time if required.
All in all we enjoyed our visit so much that we may have to go back. A special THANK YOU to all the staff especially ABBAS and the Indian Chef (apologies can't spell his name)--all were exceedingly great!
Do it---you will not regret it—even if you gain a few pounds.

Dear Mrs. Justine,
Thank you very much for your message!
In Mozambique, malaria is more prevalent in the rainy season because of the mosquitoes, but at our resort, we do fumigation almost every day and provide mosquito repellent to all of our in-house guests, to use if necessary. But even so, we suggest you to visit your doctor and take all necessary precautions before traveling.
In regarding the currency for tipping the staff, is acceptable the american USD dollars, EUROS, SA RANDS and the local currency (meticais) that's most better.
Thank you and best wishes.

The resort is very safe. One of the nicest hotels I have been too. The service overall is something out of this world. The road from the Airport is not a tarred road so not the smoothest, but on arrival at the resort you feel like you’re in Paradise. Enjoy!!
Dear Guest,
The only way to get to the islands and return on the same day is by airplane. It's quite a journey to get there, you can try and book directly with Medjumbe, Azura, or Ibo Lodge which are in all different islands. In Ibo Island there are more alternatives that you can choose, and probably they can get you different rates has they have more guests arriving. Please feel free to reach us by email if you have any doubt or query.
Thank you,
