Me and my husband stayed here 6-8 Dec. Upon our check-in we were served by the teacher Mr. Au Yeung and his student, they were extremely helpful and polite. In fact during our stay everyone (front desk, shuttle driver, staff in the restaurant) was friendly and always ready to offer help. The room was very clean and tidy, yet maintained the yesterday's charm. We really love the place! It's quite and peaceful, away from the casinos, but within walking distance to the main historical attractions. We took their free shuttle in the morning going to the ferry terminal and Hotel Lisboa. Their free WiFi signal was good. If we ever go back to Macau we would definitely stay there again.
I was back at the Pousada de Mong Ha (the "Pousada") once again, and yes, with my wife, once again. After a busy December 2017 month of travel to Phnom Penh, and Bangkok, I really needed a break - where else, but the Pousada.
Going back to the Pousada evoked pleasant memories of my first stay there in 2001 and subsequent stays. As always, the main draw for me is the Pousada "family" - the students, the maintenance staff, and the restaurant staff. They still remember me. And as always, the service was superb - cheery greetings every time they see me, the neat, clean and tidy room, and above all, the eagerness to offer help, for example, bus routes and taxi bookings. Always a treat to get back to after a long day out.
Some good improvements - strong WiFi signal (free), free shuttle in the morning to the ferry terminal and the Hotel Lisboa, refurbished rooms (new carpet).
I always (and I mean always) get this sense of peace and tranquility whenever I'm at the Pousada, especially, breakfast under the arches (see my earlier review). There is this timeless charm of days gone by that cocoons me as I sip my freshly brewed coffee and nibble at the superb home-made baguette. I feel like I'm in a rich and kind grandfather's mansion. Always a great way to start the day. Just chill.
Another key reason to go to the Pousada is the excellent dinner at the IFT Educational Restaurant. Go for the Tasting Menu, and pair it with a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon. A perfect way to end the day with a loved one. Best of all, you'll just walk back to your hotel after dinner, without going through the hassle of calling for a taxi.
Another great improvement - there's a IFT Cafe near the New Yaohan, facing Nam Van lake, and it's below road level. Took me a while to find the place and I've to thank my sharp-eyed wife for spotting it. They serve good coffee and great sandwiches. A great place to chill with your kids and pets. See the photo.
2018 will see a new Pousada. According to the hotel's website, it will be closed for about a year for a major refurbishment. I'll back in in 2019 for sure. Just can't wait for it. It's only 363 days away.
Happy New Year everybody.
If you've come to Macau for a bit of Portuguese culture, and to be far away from the casinos and soul-less hotels, this is probably the closest you'll be able to get. Granted it feels a bit 'institutional' when you arrive - it looks like (and it is!) a college campus. And the lobby is not exactly a Portuguese home in Porto. But...! When you get into the room it definitely has a lovely 'homey' feel. The room is small but carpeted, well maintained and clean. Bed and sheets were very comfortable. Bathroom is a bit lacking - small shower cubicle with dated showers, metal ceiling, etc. But it too is still clean and fine. Wifi is great. Overall for the price it is pretty darned good.
And to make up for any small deficiencies, the staff (some of which are students and others I believe instructors) are truly wonderful. They are caring, sweet, and go out of their way to help. They also use their intuition to get things for you and do things you haven't even asked for. Best hotel staff by far I've seen in Macau.
They also opened the restaurant for us on a weekend because there was a typhoon at the time. This is extremely thoughtful as all other restaurants (outside of casinos) were closed. Thank you! And to boot it was an excellent meal and very affordable (the wine list and prices are amazing - don't miss it.)
Overall - excellent. Will definitely come back.
The staff were all very friendly and very helpful. Very attentive.
The room was so large and spacious - also with a balcony it was lovely sitting in the sunshine in the morning.
The hotel was very clean with a lovely feel to it. - The breakfast was a mix of buffet and cooked breakfast which was perfect! Definitely recommend and will definitely stay there again. The location was fantastic to explore the local area - highly recommend walking to Lou Lim Leoc Garden.
This is the first time I've stayed in an educational institution that operates a hotel and restaurant. Stayed over mid-Feb 2017 (UK school half term period) as was visiting HK so decided to visit Macau for a couple of days and thanks to the excellent reviews on tripadvisor - we decided to stay here.
Took the bus, no 12, from the main Macau Ferry terminal (the local bus terminal is literally outside the ferry terminal). The bus rides cost MOP or HK$3.20 and you have to get off at "TDM" (which is 30 mins depending on traffic).
When you get off the bus, look up and you will see the yellow building (the college) on the hill, so walk back on yourself and you will see a set of traffic lights - you will be on "Avenida do Coronel Mesquita" turn right and then on the next right there's a one way lane (the cars will be coming towards you) - walk up this lane and you will will see the college on the left hand side, continue on then the Pousada will be round the corner. Yep, it's on a hill. Check in time is 15:00.
It's worth upgrading to the deluxe room which I'm glad we did as like in the photos 204 and the basement rooms had it's own veranda and the room was spacious. Like the desk area outside of the room. Coffee, tea, bottles of water and soft drinks were complimentary.
The bathroom was furnished with shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, towels, bathrobe and slippers, and at check in the reception desk will ask if you would like additional items although I requested an item unfortunately they forgot to add - oh well...but wasn't needed in the end.
Wi-fi signal in the room was good as well.
The location of the Pousada is in a quiet residential area and as set on a hill there's a park if one walks to the top where there's an eco-park and fortress including the restaurant which sadly was being renovated when we were there.
The buffet breakfast was included and was excellent - home made jams, yoghurt, continental, hot food and a touch of Chinese food on the side. The service was excellent and can put some chain hotels to shame.
The walk to St Paul's ruins is about 20 mins or so, all the way down Rua de Francisco Xavier, the road where the bus no 12 stopped but walk back on yourself. It's a busy road and one will pass lot of shops and restaurants as do not eat around St Paul's ruins/tourist area as it's expensive and average food.
The bus 25 at the bottom of the Pousada, Avendida do Coronel Mesquita, goes to Vila de Coloane and Hac Sa beach, MOP/HK$6.40 one way. The bus ride took 30 mins and you get to see the sites including Cotai which to be honest seemed very fake and certainly was empty compared to Macau which was very busy.
The air in Coloane was much cleaner and the location is quieter and walked from Vila de Coloane to Hac Sa beach (there and back took 1hr 45mins) by following the coastal line. Beautiful and hardly any cars around until we got to the main road where the buses ran. Got to Hac Sa beach and it was quiet (got there around noon) and there were mainly mainlanders on the beach.
Back at Vila de Coloane had Portuguese tarts at Lord Stowe's but it's a tourist trap as when we came back from the walk....tourists were starting to arrive so we started to miss the crowds. The bus fare on the way back was MOP/HK$5.00.
Get off at "Piscina Lim Fung" bus stop and walk up the walkway bridge to cross over the road to Avenida do Coronel Mesquita to the Pousada.
The Pousada also offers a free shuttle to the Ferry Terminal (10.30, 11.30 and 14:30). The journey ride is 5 mins. On the return ferry - one can do a standby as long as you don't have luggage.
Book direct - the Pousada releases 3 calendar months ahead. Confirmation is within 12 hrs and they responded pretty promptly on queries.
Will defo stay here again. Value for money and can beat some of the chain hotels in service. Thank you for looking after us.
