This is a wonderful B&B in Rhayader. The room was spacious, clean and welcoming. Breakfast was excellent - great choice and everything was delicious. Steve is a brilliant host. He knows a lot about the area and his restaurant recommendations were certainly accurate. We have stayed here twice already this year and plan to return in the Spring.
In a bid to have a few days of calm in amongst a world that seems chaotic and uncertain, we booked 4 nights at Penralley House. My aim was to find somewhere peaceful, where we would feel safe, close to places we might want to explore, in beautiful surroundings and with a high probability that we would be comfortable and well looked after. We were not disappointed with anything on my list. I was pleasantly surprised by how many safeguards Steve had put in place, it was very reassuring. Steve could not have been more helpful; he was a wonderful host. Arriving on a Sunday I was a little concerned we might not find somewhere to eat, but Steve was more than happy to phone and book us a meal at one of the local pubs. Jill made sure we had everything we needed and prepared delicious breakfasts each day, with fresh eggs from the chickens in the garden. My husband was particularly taken by the pancakes and fruit. Our room was immaculately clean and very comfortable. During our stay, we ate at The Crown Inn and The Triangle, and enjoyed both. A trip to the Elan valley and Clywedog Dams was wonderful, amazing scenery. The weather was not fantastic, but the rainbows on the lakes were beautiful. We left Penralley House feeling rested and re-charged. Thank you Steve and Jill – we hope your meal out fulfilled your expectations.
We just got back from a two night stay at this guest house. Right on the high street 100m from the local pubs and restaurants this lovely house is an ideal base to visit the Elan valley with its dams lakes and beautiful welsh countryside.
Our room was immaculately clean, the bed very comfortable and it overlooked the lovely gardens to the property. The owner was lovely and couldn't do enough for you. Breakfast was great and set you up for a days walking. In these strange days of Covid all government guidelines were adhered to but in a way that it didnt have any effect on our stay.
Would definitely return here and recommend it to anybody looking to stay in the area.
Had originally booked for April until Covid put paid to the world as we know it! However, was very happy to keep in touch with Steve, the owner, as to when we could visit, restrictions permitting. So delighted it worked out. Stayed week of 3rd August, Wales lifting their indoor restrictions that day ! How lucky !
Penralley House is delightful, stayed in the Cedar room, gorgeous. Felt very safe as the cleaning regime there is exceptional, huge thanks to Jill, in charge of cleaning and, also, a fabulous breakfast, eggs from the chickens who live at the bottom of the garden ! Social distancing observed, both Jill and Steve made huge efforts to ensure guests were safe, both in the breakfast room and in their assigned rooms, really admired their concerns for guests and for themselves, took the cleaning regime so seriously.
The building is beautiful, 17/18th century, lots of original features with stunning gardens, lots of chairs and benches from which to admire the gorgeous view, it is very central, lots of local walks...and free parking ! Steve booked a local restaurant for us, The Triangle inn, our first night, as we were arriving after a 5 hour drive from London ( see separate review ). He was so accommodating, cannot thank him enough for his genuine interest in ensuring guests are happy. In these Covid times, please, you will feel totally safe here, we certainly did.
Elan Valley a lovely area to explore, Penralley House an excellent base, highly recommend ! Big thank you to Steve and Jill, we will remember you!
Second visit, and just as perfect as we remembered it. Steve was as friendly and hospitable as before, the room comfortable with amazing views. Gill made delishious breakfasts easily accomodating our vegan diet (with prior notice - always a good idea). We were obviously a little cautious about going away so soon after covid lockdown, but needn't have worried. Steve and Gill had gone to a lot of trouble to ensure rooms could be thoroughly cleaned (removing some decorative items for instance) and providing bags of 'welcome tray' items etc. so that it was obvious that they were just for our use. They wore full face shields to serve breakfast and maintained social distancing diligently - all very reassuring. Rhayader is a great little town, with plenty of walks for all abilities on the doorstep and Gigrin Farm red kite feeding centre (not to be missed!) ten minutes walk from the B&B. (tip - follow the river walk back to town, it's lovely). Would highly recommend Penralley House as a comfortable, hopsitable and homely base to go exploring from!
