Nice hotel, just a short way outside Biar. Large room with a balcony but not sure if any other rooms have a balcony and lovely lounge outside bedroom.
Evening meals are provided if you give them a days notice and the food was very nice. Drinks available on request. Lovely old building with lots of outside space and the added bonus of an outside pool.
We booked 5 nights at end of September but must say that Robert's welcome was a little lacking to say the least! We really felt like we were in the wrong place at first - had to ask if he was expecting us! The house was very pretty - converted and furnished very tastefully. We had Room 7 - nice enough and very clean but personally found the bed rather hard and the bolster pillows also. Not sure if it was just our room but found we could hear every movement in the house...from EVERY noise from the bathroom next door to furniture movement and even footfall downstairs so unfortunately did not find it a restful stay. Not to mention the dog in the neighbours premises. It barked from 21.30 each evening until at least 00.30,,every single day of our stay! Robert said it was due to wild boar...do they have restricted visiting hours then? Unfortunately, due to us visiting late in the season many local restaurants were closed. We were aware Mas Fontanelles offered evening meals if booked in advance but when we asked Robert, he seemed rather reticent so we didn't bother. Breakfast was VERY disappointing. Coffee, orange juice, cake, one slice of toast, jam, cheese and ham - every day. Surely a little fruit would have made a change or some Palma ham. We were offered more toast on our last day! Sorry, but we felt like we were not very welcome and that perhaps it was the end of the season although when we asked Robert, he said they were open all year long.....not sure what went wrong for us. Pool was nice but very cold.
We stayed three nights and May/early June wanting a quiet rural bolt hole. This is exactly what we got.
Isabel is a wonderful cook. Do do do book yourself dinner (you need to let Isabel or Roberto know 24 hours before hand). She uses only local fresh ingredients and is so inventive with them. There is not the Spanish obsession with meat. In three nights (having checked with us) we had pork, fresh fish, and wonderful vegetarian dish as the main course. Starters were very inventive and her lemon cake pudding is to die for. At 16.5 Euro for dinner, it is excellent value. There is a modest but very sensibly priced wine list - again mostly local.
So apart from the food!
This is an old family farm house, slightly rambling and has serious character. We had a room on the top floor overlooking the valley. Good rural view over fields and hills. The room was a very good size, and the bathroom ditto. Everything is very clean and the beds comfortable. The hotel is at the side of a minor road, but there is virtually no traffic after about 8pm and it certainly was not an issue. The nightingale singing was the loudest disturbance.
There is a garden with lots of sitting out areas. A path leads into the hills behind the hotel. The only disappointment was that the swimming pool was not yet opened for the season. The house is decorated with paintings - some by Isabel, and some by her late mother. They add a tone which we liked.
This place is not actually in the town of Biar. When you get to Biar, take the road towards Banares, and the hotel is 4Km along this road. The town of Biar is not on the main tourist trail. But has a castle, lovely old church, and a good street market on Wednesdays.
Isabel will give you good guidance for local trips and walks. One we took (and would never have discovered without her guidance) was just heavenly with masses of wild flowers and butterflies in the hills.
This is not a smart gin palace hotel and goodness only knows where the nearest 'disco' is. It is a rural farm house that has real character, good comfort, cleanliness, excellent food, and a pair of delightful hosts who simply want you to enjoy their hospitality and rural surroundings. If you are a walker, cyclist, bird watcher, botanist, country loving person, you will like it. If you want pizzazz, look elsewhere!
My husband and I felt very welcome at Hotel Rural Mas Fontanelles. Very friendly owners, very charming place and rooms very clean. Great view from our room. The breakfast was very tasty, lovely bread, homemade cake, youhurt, cheese and marmelade, juice and we had tea. A great place in the rural district. Charming little villages in driving distance. We stayed in May and it was too cold for using the pool, but the pool area looked nice.
we have just come back from our yearly holiday to spain were we stay with my inlaws, during this time we always manage to sneek a night or two away from the children! On our first trip to spain we happened upon this lovely family run hotel and now return there every year! We love Mas Fontanelles and would reccommend it to all! The owners are always friendly and welcoming and we find the hotel rustic and romantic. It is in a gorgeous quiet location with far reaching views and an extremely welcoming and good sized swimming pool. The village of Biar is full of little eateries although the food that we had during our first trip was really tasty. We look forward to visting again next year.
