We have been staying here for more than 40 years and this is our favorite place to stay in San Diego. We had a King room overlooking Mission Bay and it was very relaxing and beautiful. The hotel had excellent Covid protocols in place and we felt safe.Happy hour by the pool was fantastic. Our room was clean and in good shape.
Looking for an overnight getaway with my husband, I booked a room at The Dana. I booked a room facing the water. When we arrived at the room it was clean and quite spacious. However, the view was not what I thought it would be. You could see the water, but the balcony overlooked trees and a parking lot. Thankfully we were on the 3rd floor because unbeknownst to me everyone who was staying on the first floor had a patio that they partied off of and extended it out onto the lawn below our room. There were multiple large groups (not social distancing or wearing masks) blasting music until at least 11:00pm. At 1:00 am we had to sit through what I can only imagine was an illegal setting off of fireworks, literally 100 yards from our balcony!! Needless to say we were checked out and in the car by 9:15 am. Complete disappointment!! The pool was packed with again no social distancing or masks being worn. After taxes and resort fees we spent $500 dollars on what was suppose to be a relaxing getaway that turned out to be from hell. Never again.
I stayed in the 600 building with a view of the boats. My room was clean. The property was clean. There were a couple of cob webs here and there outside of the room but nothing terrible. I had my mom, my kids and my dog with us. They provide you with a doggy stay bag filled with a water bowl, door sign, doggy treats, and bags to pick up after your dog.
First day, I had to work and the kids had to log into school. The wifi was great. Not too much network issues. We were all able to work fine.
The staff was very friendly and helpful at registration and at the restaurant. We enjoyed eating at Firefly.
The gym was great. They only allowed one person at time and you needed to book time slots ahead. It had great equipment to do a good work out.
The pools were nice with evening movies. We enjoyed so many amenities. The beaches were less than 2 miles away.
I have a few unfavorable comments; the walls are thin so if you have a noisy neighbor like we had the 2nd night then you will hear them. They had their TV on till like 3am really loud. The beds and pillows are not as comfortable. It's an older property but I believe they did a good job maintaining it.
So far I've stayed at the Bahia and the Dana in that area and between the two I like the Dana.
Absolutely not clean. We found a spider nest of eggs clustered in the ceiling corner, a bug crawling in our bed, ants in the bathroom tub area, multiple spider webs in the corners, changed rooms 2 times due to bug issues each time. The 3rd room we tried out at least didn't seem to have any visible bugs but had a used bar of soap in the shower. Clearly that means the room/bathroom wasn't cleaned properly because how do you leave a used bar of soap laying around? Staff did not apologize or address any of it with us, not even upon checking out. It would have been nice to hear the lady at check out say sorry for what happened during our stay, but nope just handed us our receipt and that's it. Unprofessional service and rude. The only great thing was the pool area.
The pros: beautiful, dog-friendly grounds right on the water. Such a nice location, for a local San Diegan, this was a great getaway. Nice to be able to order drinks by the pool, the food at Firefly was pretty good, beautiful path around the property and by the bay, minutes drive to Fiesta Island.
The cons: there were some hiccups the weekend we went. Power was out for several hours, the pool was closed for part of a day, and the worst part: ants. Our room was pretty infested with ants. We did our best to keep any food locked and sealed away to keep them from swarming, but they still found their way into our dog bag where I’m sure there was some treat residue. Even before the bag was discovered, they were all over the floor, the desk, the bathroom. Was hoping the hotel would allow us to swap rooms when we mentioned the ant problem, but all they did was offer to have someone come and treat the ants, which wasn’t an option to spray chemicals in our hotel room with dogs. Pretty unfortunate that I had to deal with pests on vacation that I don’t have to deal with in my own home (because I keep my home clean and treated).
