Visited here as a guest for a wedding. Very old with lots of character. Appears to have many forms of accommodation, Nice gardens and pool. set in the hills, subject to individual thunderstorms which tend to get trapped in the hills. Apart from this, it is a destination full of character and we enjoyed the wedding dancing in the courtyard til late.
Fantastic venue ,stunning views, nice pool massive thank you to the staff and the owner.
Also thank you to the italian people for making us feel so welcome.
Without doubt an excellent wedding venue, and a great holiday spot.
Castle Di Mugnana has its origins before 1000 AD, with most of the building structures from ~1300 or so. It is a fabulous, authentic, well preserved castle and we stayed on the first floor of the tower in a spacious room with stone floor, wooden shutters and old beam and plank ceiling. Of course the three foot thick walls play havoc with wifi reception but lean against the window "sill" and it is more than adequate for planning your adventures throughout Chianti and beyond. We used it as a base for 4 nights. The bathroom has all the features you need, and the mini-refrigerator will keep drinks chilled. There is a swimming pool on site and the owner/host Giovanni is generous with his explanations and recommendations for local eating etc. (his English is perfect). If you don't require daily housekeeping, and are looking for an authentic medieval experience, than this may be for you.
Castello di Mugnana is definitely Chianti's best kept secret! We did make a mistake in thinking the town of Greve was a walk or bus ride away so that we could rent a moped once we got there. We took a cab to the Castello from Florence and realized it was not convenient to any bus stop so you must arrive in a car. Cristina was nice enough to drive us to the nearest bus stop to take to Greve so that we could rent our form of transportation. Also, there is no tourist information so you must do your research on your own. I don't know if we were lucky or what but we ended up being the only ones staying there. That made us feel like royalty! Cristina did drop off clean towels for us in the middle of our stay which was nice. Relaxing by the pool became our favorite thing to do during our stay and after a few days in Florence, it was nice to relax. Our room was spacious with beautiful views on all sides (great view of the sunset every night). It was quiet, peaceful and private and would be the perfect place to have a wedding as well. It was everything we could've asked for and more. Thank you Castello di Mugnana for making me feel like a princess for a couple of days! Definitely was sad to leave and go back to reality!
Lovely setting, lots of privacy and large room, beautifully restored. We were the only ones staying at this castle during our week there and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The owner personally greeted us with a basket of fresh fruit and had the room stocked with a few groceries so that we had something to eat if we needed. The owners/caretakers allowed us a great deal of independence - they came to clean once and otherwise left us to ourselves, which we like. If you are looking for a 5 star place to be pampered, this is NOT the place. If you want to stay in a unique and beautiful castle, be independent and travel the countryside, and relax (like us), I highly recommend staying in this castle!
Renting a car while staying is a must, not only because places are more spread out, but because there are some lovely drives and scenery that should be experienced. We had a small kitchenette and there is a little grocery store in Greve in Chianti that we used quite frequently. It is conveniently located right next to the bank/ATM machine. We particularly enjoyed dining at Locanda il Gallo which is only about 5min away from the castle.
The only areas of improvement we saw were no Wi-Fi, and had to do a wire transfer to reserve which is inconvenient. Suggest enabling customers to place deposit with credit card or cash with Paypal. Pool needed a little upkeep, but we weren't there to swim anyway.
