Everyone knows that website photos are designed to look attractive to entice you to stay on their property. I get this, I understand this. In this case though, it is really a stretch. The website states “a birders paradise” and really plays up the Texas Hill Country. This hotel is on the corner of two highways and there isn’t a lick of nature to be found anywhere (strike one). Next, this is no hotel - this is a motel. You know, check in at the lobby and then DRIVE around to whatever room you are assigned. You will drive past dumpsters and big air conditioning units. It is surrounded by condos and businesses. We were fortunate that we got a room in the back furthest from the highway and it was a slow weekend so our room was quiet. Our room did not have a beautiful stone wall like the pictures on the web. It was extremely dated and worn. In fairness - our room was very clean and that was a huge plus. After settling in to our room, we had to go to three ice machines before we found one that worked. The coffee maker in our room did NOT work. On the other hand, the people at the front desk were very friendly and nice. I could only give this place an average rating. Like I said, it was not horrible and it was clean but it is no Hill Country retreat. I would not stay at this place again.
In it's day I bet this place was quite impressive. The signs of what "had been" were evident: a cantina poolside, boutique, sales office, conference rooms, 2 pools, etc. However, it was difficult to know how much was due to Covid related decreases or simply lack of financial investment. There was minimal occupancy the night we stayed. Although exterior not run down it was disappointing to see dead grass in the courtyard and walls that needed some paint & TLC. Room was comfortable and clean but furnace noisy and TV had a mind of it's own. Had maintenance come in once to "adjust" but realized it was just going to be the way it was. No USB plug-ins but WIFI functioned well. Employees were exceptionally friendly and well trained to treat their guests respectfully. We found this to be the case at the front desk and in the dining area for a modified breakfast. I would stay here again if I can book directly with the IOTH but not thru their 3rd party reservation group (Agoda). We found out after the fact that there was no cancellation option, no way to reach anyone by phone and the 3rd party was headquartered in Singapore so beware.
I enjoyed this hotel. Pool area is very nice and relaxing. Hotel restaurant lacked a little to be desired. Big screen TV in my room and it was clean. I think this is the best place to stay in town. Older style hotel but rooms are maintained.
Our last stay was six years ago and I rated it a 2. We were stranded in Kerrville for a night this week and gave it a try to see if things had improved. It needed updating six years ago and nothing has changed. The same tired carpet. The rooms smell musty. Our room had doors on both sides, so we opened them both to air it out and that helped a bit. The mattress should have been replaced years ago. Neither of us had a comfortable night. The staff are the only positive at this place. They are friendly and helpful.
First stay at Inn of the Hills although I’m frequent to Kerrville.
The first photo is the view from my room. This is odd for a couple of reasons ... 1st, the hotel was maybe 1/3 occupied but yet I got a really crappy room despite many many rooms overlooking their two nice courtyard/ pool area being vacant, and 2nd, most successful operators know to put a first time guest in best available room to make the best first impression to entice back. The GM or Rev Manager at Inn of the Hills obviously skipped that day in hotel management school.
By the way, I booked direct through hotel website, not an aggregator and booked highest rate, not discounted.
The second photo is just funny to me...the pillows are cheapest available for children’s beds. 🤷♂️
To be fair, the room did seem very clean, and though very very dated was I good repair.
Maitenace Engineer 👍
Housekeeper 👍
GM/Rev Manager 👎, obviously incompetent
Far far better properties in Fredericksburg 20 minutes away. Worth the drive most definitely.
