I have been lucky enough to stay in some lovely places but this is, without doubt, the very best yet. Kirsty and Dave couldn't have made me feel more welcome, they soon felt like old friends and we would often chat about my day's adventures as I explored the islands.
The room was large and comfortable with a fantastic view from the window - fields with sheep and cows then two lochs all in front of the backdrop of Hoy's mountains.
Breakfast was fantastic and set me up for the day so that I rarely needed to eat anything before the evening.
The 9 days I spent here will live long in the memory.
We stayed here for two nights and felt very welcome. Kirstie and David are wonderful hosts going above and beyond to ensure our stay was comfortable. Gluten free options were provided for breakfast and complimentary snacks in the room. The room was ideal with a very comfortable bed and an en-suite with a luxurious shower. There are breath taking views across fields and mountains in the distance from our window. The area is peaceful with only a few other buildings nearby and the b&b was in a central location on the west mainland. We travelled the west mainland and visited many of the attractions on our first day. The information provided by Kirstie and David was very helpful and enabled us to make the most of our short stay although I wish we had stayed longer. I totally recommend this b&b and would definitely stay there again.
Firstly, the room. My wife and I have experienced B&B's for close on 40 years, and rarely have we felt so comfortable. David and Kirsty, our lovely hosts, believe in comfort, and this shows in little touches like, a substantial sofa in the room, a choice of teas (plus coffee) and bottled water, plus toffees and biscuits. Across the landing was a small fridge to store more milk, or your bottle of wine. Our room had different aspect windows, where we could see the Standing Stones of Stenness, over the loch, or the famed 'Ugly Sheep of Grimstone', (a rare breed which stare at folk). A varied choice was on offer at breakfast, and the BEST coffee served.
David is very calm, and is fluent in a number of accents, and will discuss anything on the planet. Kirsty has a great interest in the history of Orkney, and the paranormal aspects of the place. Both are very personable and my wife and I had a great time talking with them, so much so that we had to remind ourselves after breakfast that we were only there for a week, and had places to see.
Of note, both are able to make recommendations for evening dining, historical sights, interesting tractor and birdlife spotting sites, when cruise liners were arriving, (and thus when to avoid the major places of interest), and so on.
We heard tales of poor drivers and clumsy car ferry staff, where tourists had reversed down the terminal ramp and into the sea, missing the ferry.
Orkney Island Memories is a great base, central to visiting Stenness, Maeshowe, Skara Brae and the Bay of Skaill. It's only twenty minutes from Tingwall, the ferry port for the island of Rousay. The B&B is handy for Stromness, and 25 mins from Kirkwall.
We had a brilliant holiday, helped by having such a comfortable base and superb hosts. At no time was the nearby bull noisy. Thank you, Kirsty and David, we will return.
Orkney Island memories is one of the most tranquil places I have ever stayed, the silence is almost pure.
Kirsty and David are genuine and wonderful hosts, absolutely nothing was too much for them, offering to:-
- Collect us from the local pub if we fancied a drink or two
- Collect us from Kirkwall and assist with our car when it broke down
- Cook evening dinner for us
- Gave my wife & I a lovely card and a few local gifts for us for our wedding anniversary.
Their personal touch was amazing.
The breakfasts were great with lots to chose form. From the dining room you could see the Ring of Brodgar in the distance, in fact the view was very thought provoking indeed.
The room we stayed was clean and modern with an amazingly comfortable bed - so much so that it is difficult to have an early start in the morning! Coffee, tea and biscuits are supplied.
Free wifi and a tv are also supplied but we decided to enjoy the peace and read a book.
Orkney Island memories is actually central to most of the tourist attractions, Skara Brae is only a 10 mile drive down the road. Kirkwall (the main town) is a 10 mile drive away in the opposite direction.
I thoroughly recommend Orkney Island Memories.
Thank you, Kirsty and David, for a wonderful time, we certainly left with plenty of our own Orkney Island memories.
