Our family visit over Christmas 2020 to Ikuka was nothing short of magical. The camp setting is spectacular. The game drives were beyond our expectations with Geoffrey, our superb tour gude. He made the magic of Ruhaha come alive for us and our 6 year old.
Ikuka is clearly a labour of love for Mark and Chloe- our tented suite , food, sundowners, meals, eapecially the Christmas dinner complete with crackers- was made super special by them and their exceptional team.
A very stunning and memorable experience. Thank you very much Mark, Chloe, Alex and Verity!

What an absolute beaut of a lodge! We have been on many safaris however this was our first time in the Ruaha. It won’t be our last...

Wildlife/game drives: we stayed 4 nights and did game drives morning and evening every day, with a walking safari one morning and a full day drive another day. We saw countless elephants, giraffes and antelope - all in notably large groups - a large pride of 14 lions and a smaller one of 5, as well as 4 leopards (including a mating pair!) which we were delighted with. The wild dogs eluded us once again - the park is well-known for its large numbers of these endangered animals however we were told that they had not been seen in the vicinity for several months when we arrived and many of them were thought to have left the park. The last sighting was apparently over by Jongomero. No matter - the elephants and leopards more than made up for this minor disappointment and you can’t predict mother nature! Our guide was Luka who was a really lovely guy - in common with his camp colleagues, he had a quick wit and a curious mind, and we had wonderful chats with him over bush breakfasts and lunches. Thank you, Luka! He also had the useful talent of always being in the right place at the right time for interesting sightings!

Rooms: we had room no. 2, which is closest to the main lodge and has a view of fhe sunrise. There are only a few rooms on this side of the hill so it feels very private and secluded. We did not hear a peep from the main lodge despite it being very close by. Rooms feature beautiful gauzy curtains that billow romantically in the evening breeze, and frame the open-sided rooms on all sides (there is a zip-up mosquito net ‘wall’ to protect you from nocturnal visitors). Beds are blissfully comfortable and frankly enormous - i can report it takes exactly 3.5 log-rolls to reach your partner on the other side! Bathroom are also enormous and open-air which we loved, with wonderful shampoo/conditioner/body lotion etc all made in Zanzibar. Probably the thing i will remember most though, is sitting on our deck before a game drive with delicious coffee in hand, with the sounds of the dawn chorus as the red sun slowly fills the sky. Heaven!

Food: The food is inventive, expertly executed and downright delicious - easily the best meals we’ve ever had on safari! We implored chef Peter to write a cookbook and the good news is that he is already working on it. We especially enjoyed the fact that there were healthy options including delicious, creative and filling salads at lunchtime. Desserts were also excellent and presented beautifully. Breakfast is usually packed and taken out in the bush, while lunch is served at individual tables at the lodge. Dinner is usually communal however you can ask for private dining on your deck if you wish, as we did one night. Communal dinners are hosted by a member of lodge staff and a guide, and are great fun. Ikuka seems to attract a real mixture of people but everyone we met seemed thoroughly delighted to be there, which is a great sign.

Staff: despite all of the above, it’s the people that really makes this lodge special. The team here is truly commendable - personalised yet efficient service, served up with great humour, warmth, energy and enthusiasm. We spent a great deal of time talking to various members of staff, and they all seemed genuinely happy to work there. Owner Mark (who we were delighted to meet on our last evening) has selected a great team and seems to look after them well which shows in their work. Special thanks to Luka, Lili, Jake, Peter, Mustafa and Saloum! We hope the Ikuka team won the football match!!

I can’t believe I forgot to leave a review so sorry. Really don’t want to leave a review as want the place all to myself. We have now been to Ikuka twice and will return. When you first walk into the dining room and look over the Ruaha Park it takes your breathe away. This is how Safari should be done luxury in a very homely way. Do not for one minute think you will leave hungry at any time they are constantly feeding you with the most delicious food that you would be hard pushed to fine in a city restaurant. Rooms are out of this world and will never tire of looking out into the Ruaha. Everything is thought of for odour comfort. Once you have picked up your jaw and got out on Safari you will not be disappointed. The guides are amazing and can’t do enough for you and look after you. We met an old friend from a previous camp Festo again and what this man doesn’t know isn’t worth knowing about Tanzania and it’s wildlife, plants and trees. This visit was timed with Christmas and this has to be one of the best Christmases I have ever had and we can’t thank Mark and Chloe enough for letting us join their family Christmas. We have made memories of several lifetime over our two visits here and long to go back.

Our stay at Ikuka was just incredible. We went on our honeymoon, it being my husbands first safari and my second. First off Ruaha definitely seems to be a great location to choose, especially over (from what we've heard) the busy Serengeti. We went in January which is rainy season, and although we knew this we probably didn't pack correctly as it can be a bit chilly in the evenings and early mornings. The location of the camp is sensational, on top of a hill overlooking incredible views, but just be aware can be a little windy so pack accordingly!
The room was stunning, amazing view, enormous bed! It zips up at night to keep the creepy crawlies out but you still feel like you're getting the true safari experience! One night we were told to keep our shoes inside the tent as the hyenas were out and about!
The whole team are amazing and really make you feel at home. You eat communally with the rest of the guests, which is perfect as you go out on drives with each other so you get to know one another quite well. The food is fantastic - I'm not sure how they manage to maintain such exceptional standards when you are literally in the middle of nowhere!
We were so lucky with what we saw, and we also went on a walking safari which was amazing to be out walking in the middle of the bush! The guides are extremely knowledgeable and we had Festo, who really knows how to track the animals and find you incredible sights!
I think it is the little touches that make this place so incredible. The free laundry service, the wake up calls with your choice of morning tea/coffee/hot chocolate, the hot water bottles on the seats in the morning and Mark and Tanya being there every time you return from a drive to welcome you back and ask what you've seen. Also just the general happiness and welcoming nature of ALL the staff - you can tell this must be a great place and environment to work and that shines through and makes you as a guest feel at ease. Special mention goes to Seif and Salum (sorry if incorrect spelling!) who are great company, and provide amazing service at meal times.
If we are lucky enough to go on safari again, we know we should probably try different areas - but we would find it hard not to go back to Ikuka again!!
