Crossing the river in a small motorised boat we were transported into Nirvana. Just six tented rooms comprise the camp. Each is organised to look directly onto the river where one may while away the time observing the birds and animals, especially the groups of hippos disporting themselves. Indeed the snorting and snuffling of the hippos may qualify as ac”theme tune” for the camp.

The tents/rooms are enormous. The bed is capacious with mosquito nets set down at night. There is a bathroom with free-standing bath and walk-in shower supplied with piping hot water. A separate unit holds the toilet. Two basins complete the sanitation ware. The wardrobe area forms part of the bathroom area.

Outside there is a plunge/small swimming pool. Sun loungers and couches abound which bare under trees. A bush buck wandered idly past as we relaxed. This open area for animals means that that one has to be accompanied to the room at night.

Food is excellent. Breakfast is almost up to you. The local yoghurt is superb being thick and creamy. Pancakes or eggs are offered. Lunch is usually salad with a quiche and hot dish served fresh as a buffet. One selects dinner at tea from a menu of only three courses all delicious.

Drinks are included and may be chosen from a selection inside the room or from a small bar in the main room for the entire camp.

Turning to the safari drives on offer and other options these are at the heart of the camp. The guides are informative, friendly and keen to make the drive as exciting as possible. Giraffe are a special animal here in the park with the Thornicroft or Luangwa sub-species only located here.

The staff were outstanding Emmanuel gave a great news about the history of the camp and the others in the group.

Superb. We shall return

My fiance and I recently spent 3 nights at Chinzombo and we were blown away by the simple elegance of the camp. Our chalet was perfectly comfortable -- equipped with private plunge pool, air conditioning, and a spacious bathtub -- and we opted out of some game drives to enjoy bird and game watching from our verandah. The manager and staff were wonderful and appropriately attentive: they checked in with us, offered lovely cocktails from the bar, and gave us our space to absorb the peace and quiet of the camp. Our game drives were eventful and wonderful -- but what else can you expect from the South Luangwa! With Abraham as our guide, we were also attuned to the smaller wonders of the bush: the returning cuckoos and kingfishers, and the beautiful vegetation bursting to life after the first major rains. A truly special experience and one we would recommend to anyone who enjoys an easy, sophisticated perspective on one of the most spectacular safari destinations.

Chinzombo is a remarkable diamond in the rough in South Luangwa, beautiful earth tones of grey and light-brown blended with bright whites (of the floors and ceilings) Chinzombo manages to blend into its environment and yet still stand out. Its Management duo of Emmanuel and Chibesa ensure the smooth and seamless running of this small 6 tented camp. The rooms scream luxury with everything you would need on safari and more, catering to a very specific traveler, equipped with a fully stocked bar, hairdryers, wifi (even in the rooms), yoga mats, evening breeze cooling system in the beds for those warm Luangwa nights, and not to mention private pool, yes you heard right not plunge but actual pools. My colleague and I enjoyed our stay there.

This was our family's first safari experience to celebrate our 20 year anniversary. We took our kids - ages 13, 12 and 9 - to celebrate and could not have been happier with our stay at Chinzombo. We consider ourselves most lucky to have happened upon Chinzombo as our first camp during our first days in Africa. The only downside to this was that each camp and house that followed in our 2 week trip was compared to Chinzombo's staff and setting. Wendy, Fin, Shaddy, Phillip, Jospehat, Afax and all the others at this camp became like family to us and we continued to long for their company throughout our stay in Zambia.

As far as specifics, the camp is absolutely stunning as the pictures depict ... they didn't even need to embellish these photos, it's that beautiful! From the villas to the dining and socializing areas, the accommodations are luxurious yet surprisingly comfortable. The bar area was so inviting and we all felt comfortable lounging around, playing games, and enjoying fireside chat with the staff in the evenings. The villas are spacious yet still have a camp-like feel with the tasteful and rustic furniture. The kids loved the small private pools under the backdrop of the bush. And we all enjoyed the cleanliness that rivals a 5-star hotel despite being thick in the bush.

The food is outstanding and they obviously observed our preferences to adjust as the days passed - vodka tonics for sundowners when we didn't even ask, scrambled eggs for my son before he inquired, plain bread for my picky daughter, etc. The service and attentiveness from the staff is outstanding at Chinzombo!

Our game drives were lively and now that we've been to other parts of Zambia we appreciate how abundant the game is around Chinzombo. We saw elephant cross the river daily and giraffes came frequently to drink. Our guide, Shaddy, is extremely experienced and impressively knowledgeable. He seems to have a sixth sense when it comes to finding game. And, we all appreciated how well he adjusted his discussions to accommodate our "first-timer" safari status and for our kids to make it more fun and educational.

Finally, Wendy and Fin were the best hosts and we have all commented on how much we have missed them since we said good bye. They are fun, easy going, and very down to earth. What makes them special and stood out to us was there genuine interest in you to ensure you are having the best possible experience. While this may be their first camp they've managed in Africa, their experience in hospitality shows with the special touches they infused - from scheduling a surprise private anniversary dinner on our villa deck for my husband and I while they entertained the kids to arranging a special trip to Chipembele, it was these unique touches that made our experience memorable.

I cannot emphasise enough how wonderful the actual accommodation and staying here was. The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming, the food was incredible at every meal and the rooms themselves were spectacular - large, spacious, private plunge pool each, wifi, etc.

However, the actual safari itself was a complete shambles. We did only stay here because it was closer to the airport, but were dreading it on arrival because of all the rumours we had heard about it as we travelled around, which all turned out to be true. I understand that it is highly unlikely to be their fault - their unfortunate placing by the main gate means that the park is flooded with self-drives who do not understand basic etiquette at all and there are far too many lodges in such a small area. Consequently, any sighting is surrounded by between 4-8 cars at any one time - and not just exciting sightings - the giraffes, for example, had at least 5 cars every time we saw a group. The night drive was even worse - more headlights than animals.

The guide seemed a little uninspired and unable to tailor his information to his clients. For example, we are very experienced and have been on safari over 15 times, yet he still felt the need to tell us basic information such as "males have antlers, females don't". He was nice enough, but did seem to lack the social skills we've experienced at most other places.

The actual animal sightings, if you can ignore all the cars, are not bad. And again I must emphasise that the actual accommodation is wonderful. However, if you're paying this much to go on safari, there are definitely better places to go. I honestly feel awful for the investors behind this, as if not for the safari it would be perfect, but you do obviously go for the safari... very disappointing.

Response from NormanCarr, Owner at Time + Tide Chinzombo

Dear AnnabelJanyne, Thanks for your review and we are so pleased you liked Chinzombo and our fabulous staff. We as Managers/Owners are incredibly proud of the entire team and think the camp itself is very special. I must apologise on behalf of your guide; guiding is something we pride ourselves on and have won awards for, so when I hear that you felt your guide was less than you expected then that is not acceptable and we will certainly investigate this matter further. As you have said, you're here for safari; we're lucky enough to have great game in the South Luangwa and your guide should enhance that by listening to your requirements. If you're interested in areas with less vehicles, then these can be found without diminishing the game experience
